Enthusiasm Counters Cool Breeze

Prince George, B.C. – The consensus around the city on Saturday was that Thursday’s brilliant sunshine and a temperature of 20 was just about perfect.
However, it was a tease on Mother Nature’s part and we came smartly back to reality with brisk winds out of the northeast and a temperature that managed to creep up to 7 degrees yesterday. It didn’t seem to dampen the enthusiasm that comes with being outdoors, though. Those intent upon finding something they would value went looking for it on the tailgates and tables of those who valued it no longer.
The annual Junk in the Trunk sale in the CN Centre parking lot brought out the vendors who, with a $10 donation to REAPS, could attempt to unload things which had long ago worn out their welcome in basements and garages around town. Buyers had the good fortune of being able to attend one big garage sale all in one location. A win-win, as long as you were dressed for the wind.
Across 18th Avenue and over at the city soccer pitches was a good-sized crowd of parents and youngsters taking advantage of the fields being open for another season. The grass was sparse in some areas, still coming back to life after being smothered by snow for 5 months or so. But the ground was dry and the game was on and what more could a footballer want?
Several pitches were vacant, the girls had some good battles going on a few more, and the little guys, the would-be Messi or Rooney of the future, occupied much of the area, some getting their very first taste of booting one into the netting. Parents in parkas and boys in their boots seemed to enjoy being outside, despite Mother Nature’s reminder that, after all, it’s only the beginning of May.
