Heavy Lifting Before George Street Fire Cause Pin Pointed

Tuesday, May 6, 2014 @ 1:28 PM

Prince George, B.C. – Prince George Fire Rescue  fire investigators are bringing in the heavy equipment today to  peel away the layers of debris from the George Street fire.

“We have roofs upon floors upon floors, and all of that has to be lifted before our investigators can get in there” says P.G. Fire Rescue Chief John Iverson.

The  property owners and tenants had insurance,  although  only the  operators of the Copper Pig restaurant have made their  future plans clear.  They say they plan to reopen, but  there’s no word on when that might happen.  The cinder block firewall that  prevented the spread of flames southward from  Something Old, Something New,  did  suffer some heat damage,  and there is some damage to  a corner of the roof, so there is work that will need to be done.

Commonwealth Realty Group owns the buildings that were  levelled by the flames.  The purchase of that 300 block of George Street  had been  part of a grander plan for downtown redevelopment.   The tenants of the buildings have not yet said if they plan to relocate their businesses.

George Street remains closed to vehicular traffic, but pedestrian traffic is being allowed on the east sidewalk.

I’ll have that pulled pork sandwich, double smoked please.

The city needs downtown parking and you get a insurance check. Win win for all

I think the Fire Dept. did one hell of a job keeping the fire contained to just a few buildings. All this old wooden structures in that are, it’s amazing the blaze was not way worse. My hat is off to the Prince George Fire Department and all the firefighters!

So what is the likelihood that this fire’s cause will be of “undetermined origin”? Like so many unexplained fires lately! Maybe hiring a new fire investigator might be in order?

Not sure why everyone jumps to the conclusion that there is a fire bug going around just because a city has had more fires than normal. It’s called a domino effect. Old buildings are match sticks waiting to burn. Sorry for the loss of the businesses but when you put a store and restaurants into these things you never know what can happen. Time to inspect them for wiring faults and the whole nine yards.

Hard to tell what caused the fire. Likely electrical. A short somewhere.

Wood that has been dried for fifty plus years burns hot and fast.

” Maybe hiring a new fire investigator might be in order?”

Why, because the locals can’t solve the case in an hour, like on television?
