Second Set of Stairs?
Yellow staircase is a landmark in Prince George….Council ponders extending the Connaught Hill access –
Prince George, B.C.- There is the yellow staircase that leads from Patricia Boulevard to Connaught Hill, and, there could be another set of stairs.
Council has agreed to move the project, expected to cost more than $600 thousand, on to the unfunded Capital Plan for 2015.
Staff presented a report to Prince George city Council about extending the steps to the top of Connaught Hill. The second set of stairs would be placed along the west ridge of Connaught Hill from the existing trail and stairs to the top of the hill and would cost about $615 thousand dollars.
The stairs , say staff, supports “Council’s focus for a community that encourages and supports health and wellness by continuing to improve infrastructure at community parks and by improving the accessibility of those parks for all citizens.”
The proposed stairs would cover a distance of 79 metres and would have an elevation change of 29 metres.
In the report to Council, staff estimate the following expenses:
- Design $30,000.00
- Materials $324,000.00
- Fabrication & Installation $138,000.00
- Contingency $123,000.00
- Total $615,000.00
In the report to Council, staff say that if this project is added to the capital expenditure plan for next year, a detailed cost estimate would be established for construction purposes.
The extension of the stairway was one of three capital projects council had asked staff to explore, the other two being bike lanes on North Nechako Road, and another phase at Duchess Park.
"I would like to see this move forward" says Councillor Albert Koehler "We have a wonderful park in the middle of the city but pedestrians can't get there."
Councillor Brian Skakun opposed the idea. "From my position, we're just putting this on a wish list that in all liklihood won't pass." He said he was not willing to support this item and risk bumping other projects including the Nechako bike lanes.
Councillors Skakun and Frank Everitt were the only two to oppose adding this to the unfunded 2015 Capital Plan.

I am beginning to think that perhaps the city is laundering money for someone, LOL. Obviously they have too much of it and need to spread it around if they are thinking about dropping over half a million for something like this. Good grief!
I’ve walked up that section before. Its not a hard climb. I don’t really think it would get used much.
I think a much better location for a set of stair would be at the end of Massey Drive up to the University. This would provide housing access within walking distance to the university and much quicker access up the hill than the 15th and University way round about route. It could tie in a a circle tour for joggers using both University Hill and Tyner Blvd routes and would provide great views of the city.
The Connaught Hill stairs would more than likely just provide an access point in the winter for vagrants of the park. $615,000 seems very rich for the use it would get.
When you hear the citizens complain about Pg it’s always about better access to canaught hill, it’s not about potholes, snow removal or the constantly increasing taxes and user fees…. Finally council is listening to the public…. Sarcasm of course
Amazing that there is a contingency that account for almost 20% of the project cost!
Stairs to the hill. Hmmmm… half a million dollars on stairs, and yet they still have those absolutely hideous and embarrassing out houses up there. There are so many weddings, and graduations, and family gatherings up there. It’s lovely to see a bride or her elderly grandmother have to duck into the lovely out houses!! Maybe use that money to build a PROPER washroom facility. There is already power (for the Christmas northern lights). There is already water. They have built a brand new washroom/changeroom in Fort George Park, but now its closed – from what I heard indefinitely. How much did that cost us. Parks this size and still the outhouse system!!! Shame !!
Absolutely not necessary. If people really want to get to the top, or keep in shape, they can use the road, or the present stairs and trail.
I agree that they should be upgrading the toilet system. Prince George is so far behind in looking after the amenities in this City that it is a joke.
Its a rare site indeed to see anyone using the present stairs although I am sure they do. Perhaps the City could find out the actual use before they do anything.
If there is mony like this to throw around how about a sidewalk or pathway on bear rd. That is the frontage rd beside hwy 16. Heavy traffic on this narrow neglected road that sees a lot of pedestrian traffic.
Or at least fix existing sidewalks with the money.
And she’s buying the stairway to heaven….
Seriously though?
Maybe the folks building the hotel across the street asked for this?
There has to be someone special that wants the stairs. The only people you ever see using the existing ones are local rubbies.
Thank you lildigger , you are very right , the stairway to heaven for the homeless and starving people of PG . money well wasted again , what is the real benefit ???
Will it really matter if we have a second stairs , I think not ! Not as if we ever see large amounts of people ever using it.
Why don’t they just spend the money CLEANING THE STREETS. It is a SHAME that this is not done yet and is AWFUL for people visiting our city. I am really embarrassed.
Ohhh come on… the homeless need access to their campsites on top of the hill.. Be nice.. I’m sure it’ll be cheaper than an elevator..
And Green needs a legacy for after she leaves.. I totally agree a path/latter/steps up towards UNBC would benefit more people.. More active people up thee that would those stairs. Also will be a shortcut to the school for the students..
Better yet, The city can use that for the homeless to get them back on the path to recovering their lives and maybe get them involved in building this.
Hmmm, must be in the wrong circle. Didn’t know that the stairs was a landmark.
Even if it could be considered a landmark by some after few years of City of Prince George level of “maintenance” it will be a mark on the land.
I don’t understand why extending the Connaught stairs and similar projects would go ahead before actual safety issues.
The kids that have to walk or bike along Dawson to get to Glenview Elem school are at huge risk to being run over, even more so in the winter time. That road becomes very narrow & believe me it is frightening to just drive down it praying a kid doesn’t slip into your vehicles path.
A sidewalk on just one side would make a huge difference. Please can we put our kids safety first?
Lets design a set of stairs that will require 1/2 million a year to remove the snow and ice from them. And a 1/2 million to build.
I think a nice trail development would be a better option that stairs. The UNBC Connector trails are a good example. A metal staircase doesn’t provide any advantage over a nicely developed dirt path.
Go cheap on the stairs and you can build brand new houses at the top and the bottom of the stairs just like the homes in Westgate for that kind of money. Are those outhouses on Connaught Hill designated heritage? Rename city hall “Ninnyville”. Thanks.
First of all it is a dumb idea since there are so many other neglected things to look after in this town (cracked and potholed 4th Avenue, deploarble Croft Road, no sidewalks and so forth) but since their minds are already 100% made up (and nothing will ever change that) so the stairs are going to be constructed – how about making them out of suitable wood – I mean we have a new Wood Innovation and Design Centre, we have plenty of wood, why make it out of steel beams shipped all the way from Korea or China?
Sometimes the City does not make any sense whatsoever.
What a nice park the Ginter Meadow would make on the West side of the City.
Cheers
The stairs , say staff, supports âCouncilâs focus for a community that encourages and supports health and wellness by continuing to improve infrastructure at community parks and by improving the accessibility of those parks for all citizens.â
If this is true, how can all citizens benefit? I cannot see many seniors, families with strollers or people that use wheelchairs or walkers using these stairs. If they are going to work on access , take the example of the ancient forest universal designed boardwalk.
Universal means designed for everyone!
I have a suspect Ginters Meadow will eventually become a subdivision. Only a matter of time.
Can you imagine what that will be worth to a developer. The city will finish punching Foot hills to ties into Ferry and lead a option for another roadway up the hill. Massey will extend to the new Foothills. Only a matter of time.
I don’t think its privately owned. I think with proper planning it is going to be worth a mint.
I think a set of stairs to the top is a wonderful idea. I would go for a walk up their and have my lunch much more often if there was some reasonable access like stairs for the second half.
However, at what point do our city leaders decide we do not have the money for such a project right now?
And just where on the city’s priority list did these stairs come in?
Do we not already have someone on city payroll that can design a set of stairs to save us the additional $30,000. And, do we not already have welders at the city shops that could build/fabricate these stairs in their shops?
I thought we were still trying to cut costs running this city, not trying to think up new projects.
You know what would be really neat is a water slide off the top of the hill. after making that climb.
In 2010, Council set priorities for pedetrian network improvement through the adoption of the Active Transportation Plan. If you have a look at the pedestrian network map, you’ll see improvements to Connaught Hill are not identified, and many of the identified priorities have not been dealt with in the the last four years. http://princegeorge.ca/citybusiness/longrangeplanning/transportationplans/activetransportationplan/Documents/Map2_pedestrian.pdf
A good trail development would make more sense but then they’d want to spend anther million paving it! Idiots.
The City owns Ginter Meadow. They have run a 14 inch water main from 15th ave diagonally across the meadow and really screwed it up for residential use.
It would not be a good subdivision as the sunlight is restricted by Cranbrook hill. The Meadow gets a lot of use by the locals and of all things its a doggie park where people disregard the rule, “cleanup after your puppy.
Cheers
This should go on the ‘nice to have’ pile, along with the PAC.
Make the existing stairs one way only and put in a zip line for coming down.
I like the zip line idea.
Why won’t the city listen for the last nine years when, even with the RCMP backing me, I have had to call the ambulance four times and the RCMP twice and even once for an RCMP officer getting hurt on the hill in the 2000 block of Norwood Street where the street breaks off to a very steep and often dangerous trail. Many a cyclist and pedestrian and even an officer in pursuit of a perp have crashed head first down the steep trail. Even a motorized wheelchair crashed sending its rider by ambulance off in a cloud of dust. Mick Jones and crew have inspected the site many times and always the conclusion that it should be starred or blocked off. I agree but for the sake of the public that these are the alternatives now lets start saving peoples necks. Ridiculous that 2500 block of Upland gets a set of stairs with less than 25 people using the stairs in a day while over 92 used this hill in the same day. Another thing, how stupid does Green think we the taxpayers are? this contingency cost? Lets see how stupid we really are.
Agree with fixing existing problems first, rather than creating new infrastructure that its too expensive. Sidewalks are crumbling all over tonw can council please put the priority towards fixing those first.
Also, if they insist on doing this, why not a nicely graded path that all can use.
This city management is getting my neck really sore from shaking my head at the ideas someone comes up with to waste money. I was born (1952) and raised in Prince George. I live in the area just south of the “Yellow Stairs” until I left home. There were no “Yellow Stairse” in that period of time. In fact, my buddies and I used the trail to go downtown and return home on a regulars basis. We did this year round. It did get a little scketchy in the winter, causing a challenge amongst us.
I think the “Yellow Stairs” on that path were an excellent idea. However, to continue the stairs to the top of Connaught Hill is a total waste of money. The trail worked for all these years for the few people that use it. Don’t fix what already works. Everybody keeps screaming about the poor condition of the roads and sidewalks, and these clowns want to spend over half a million dollars for this?
Who ever is coming up with these stupid ideas should be fired. It’s a ridiculous idea. Is anyone at City Hall listening. Prince George is a crumbling mess, and they even consider a project like this, or on a bigger scale, the PAC.
Taxi
stupid is as stupid does.
