Friday, May 16, 2014 @ 12:00 AM

It is a long weekend, and  if we are very lucky, we will have some great weather.

But, it's also  that day of the week when you get to speak up on the issues that matter to  you.

It's time for the Friday Free For All.

You pick the topic, but please, obey the three simple rules:

Keep it clean

Keep it Legal

No Bullying

Will the city do anything with the Bandstra truck parking overnight at the end of Domano?

when will city finish cleaning streets??? It.s like they jump all over

My little complaint is for the aquatic center. Everytime i go there seems to be a line. One young girl working the till checking up names and memberships in the computer and an older lady doing absolutely nothing but wasting time chatting up the janitor. EVERYTIME!. She doesnt offer to help, just sits there looking annoyed. Why the hell does she deserve a raise. Its a pathetically run place.

So what was all the fuss about now having to show ID before you can vote? You have to show ID everywhere! Surely showing ID to exercise your right to vote is not a big chore. I heard that you can use one of more than 30 types of ID…..jeeez that doesn’t sound like such a chore!

In any case I am happy with the change because it will make sure that everyone who shows up to vote will have to show ID to prove they are eligible to vote. Whats so wrong with that?

Now if we could only make it MANDATORY to vote like some other countries…..

Don’t want to bother to vote….OK pay the fine!

gimmeabreak the problem is not so much the voter ID, but rather the stripping of the Electorial Officer to compel testimony and such or any investigative powers required to ensure enforcement of electoral rules surrounding auditing of elections for proper adherence to the rules.

Think of Pierre Poutine. The electoral officer had not powers to do his job with the robbo calls and now the conservatives want to take what little the Electoral officer did have to investigate and strip him of those powers too. What do the conservatives have against accountability in the elections?

Making it out to be an outrage about the mandatory ID is Machiavellian. A smart head fake on behalf of the proponents of fascism. Making an election out to be sacred while stripping it naked of any powers to police itself.

That said if one moves recently and their address is different from their ID and utility bills, than through these new Mandatory ID rules they can’t vote… ie students and transients that relocate near an election time. It goes against the spirit of democracy if every thing isn’t done to ensure every citizen that wants to vote can.

Looks like China is making new friends in the South Pacific. Deploying 86 naval vessels to protect an off shore drill rig they moved into Vietnamese waters in direct confrontation to Vietnam. Might is right is alive and well in the South Pacific… International Law be damned.

Philippine Navy reports China has started building an airstrip and naval refueling base on a Filipino Island near Palawan Island on a Spratly shoal over a 1000km from mainland China. To hell with International Law.

China is also arresting Filipino fishermen at a shoal well withing the 300km exclusive economic zone only 75km from Manila. International Law appears to be irrelevant at this point for China.

China is testing the Americans to see if the Americans are willing to defend allies and the global world order. If America backs down, then this will set of a regional arms race with countries like Japan and South Korea going nuclear.

China launched these missions while Obama was in the Asia Pacific only a few weeks ago… a snub of sorts to Obama. Like the new air defense identification zone (ADIZ) over the East China Sea (including Japanese and South Korean airspace), and the disputed Islands with Japan… China is pushing out and fueling regional instability that is just as serious as Syria and Ukraine to global stability.

China is a country we are willing to free market trade our country over too. A communist regime that sees an inch and takes a mile. Ignores international law with impunity… and yet Harper is willing to sign a FIPA act with them that would bind all levels of government to trade tribunal judgements from China if they don’t like our ‘democracy’.

Meanwhile in BC our government gives China the reward of apology propaganda for any future wars. Not a peep about lawlessness on the high-seas. The timing was horrible. Our South China Seas partners in LNG must be impressed with our solidarity for ‘International Law’ in their back yard?

Who knows, had we not had restrictions on Chinese immigration until 40-years ago, then hypothetically we might already be speaking Mandarin and doing goose steps to our overseas overlords? Maybe we should not be so quick to label past policy all racist and be thankful for the kind of country they fought for and left us to sustain. The world can be a harsh unforgiving place, and democracy a fragile thing to protect.

The communist party of China must laugh when they see our Canadian politicians coming. Its a shame so many are chest deep in fog.

I see your point….

However all the hoo-ha coming from the objectors focused about 99% on the voter ID issue.

I understand the address issue has now been fixed, and there has been a position created for an independent overseer with legal authority to deal with suspected election fraud. I like that better where there would be no ties to any government of the day, nor any actual ties to the election itself other than having the power to act on reported cases of election fraud. I am partial to independent positions like that.

They were taking a page directly out of the Republican handbook in making it more difficult for people who don’t support them to vote, all under the guise of increased accountability. This is a problem that doesn’t exist. There is no evidence of large scale voter fraud amongst people who aren’t eligible to vote. On the other hand, there is evidence that stories were made up and/or passed along from “friends of friends” to justify why these changes were needed.

It’s a sham and a solution to a problem that wasn’t really there. One only has to look at who is most impacted by the changes in order to understand the motive.

OK well this helped to get Friday started :)

LOL! Have a great weekend gimmeabreak and everyone else on O250 land!

Stanwich: Ha, ha. She’s probably the one in charge!

I have read that sanctions against Russia are being definitely felt there. Now, over China’s bullying tactics in the Pacific, if all trade with China suddenly stopped, they would probably have to rethink their position.
I think having too strong and dependant trade links to any country that we feel iffy about in regards to human rights or other of their government policies, is dangerous. Yes, it would hurt our economy if we suddenly stopped trading with them but if it came to war, that’s what would happen anyway and ultimately we would probably be better off without them.
Just think about how much of their ‘products’ end up in our landfills in a rather short period of time.
If we are going to trade internationally, wouldn’t it be better to spread that trade out with a lot of other countries, even in smaller quantities with each, than being beholden to one ‘iffy’ trade partner?

Oh, have a wonderful, safe, weekend everyone. We want you all back on Tuesday, refreshed, healthy and alive!

Dragonmaster: Have you tried calling city bylaw enforcement? They do have limited coverage in the evenings and on weekends now. Maybe they aren’t breaking any rules.

Stillsmokin: They do jump all over. Streets very close to ours got done about three weeks ago but not our street. Its called the organisation at the top. There isn’t any.
The wind probably stated blowing and they all had to go downtown and start all over there again.

Ever since the postal rates increased, and the Canada Post internal changes, I have noticed a significant drop in service.

Since all my family is in PG, I send a lot of greeting cards north. I’ve mailed two since March. One took 8 days to arrive, the most recent one this week took 9 days.

It used to take 3-4 days without fail.

1. Is the Wood Innovation building on schedule, and does anyone care??

2. Has anyone heard whether or not we are going to get a new President of UNBC. If so when.??

3. Who is running for Mayor in the next election. As far as I know, no one has officially announced yet.??

4. Seems the idea of Wide Body Cargo jets, and Passenger jets doing Tech Stops at PG Airport, is still a long way away. Does this mean that the theory **If you build it they will come** is based primarily on hyperbole and wishful thinking.

5. What’s with the Delta Hotel. Seems like a lot of equipment sitting idle. Who can afford to have this equipment sitting around??

6. The Storm Sewer Utility being considered by the City is a *sham** to collect more money from overtaxed citizens. Will the City scrap this idea?? One could certainly hope so.

7. Studies show that large sporting events like the Winter Games lose money. Hotels, restaurants, and bars, make money. The retail industry loses money. What benefit will the average citizen get from the winter games??

8. How can we afford to spend $500,000.00 on a yellow stairway to the top of the Connaught Hill, when we don’t know how many people actually use these stairs?? Could this money not be spent somewhere else where we could get more **bang** for our buck.

9. Anyone notice that the new City office space on 18th Avenue West of the transfer station has lots of space for parking. This space now abuts the transfer station. Could the garbage transfer station and recreational sewer dump, have been closed because the City did not like the smell of these facilities so close to their new digs?? Just askin.

Was just down to the Library this past week–what a mess!!! The hotel that won’t be done in time for the winter games= black eye for the whole country to see!!
Right next to the main venue for awards-sure will look pretty with snow on it!
Hey CITY—-the malls have line painters out, the YRB has line painters out–are you waiting for the line painting -until November???

@nktr13: The City needs to get the streets cleaned first, then they can paint the lines. They should have it done by the time the snow flies.

Palopu: “5. What’s with the Delta Hotel. Seems like a lot of equipment sitting idle. Who can afford to have this equipment sitting around??”

They announced recently that they were thinking about a design change after the foundation was poured. They made no promises with respect to having it done the the Games, and it didn’t seem to be a priority with them.

I don’t understand how we can spend 600,000 on a staircase to connaught hill. Yet we can’t even put new sod or artificial turf and a new track on our show piece “pink” stadium. This town should be apoligizing to Tom Masich and it’s users for letting this venue get to the state it is in. The city should be ashamed. Can’t even put new light bulbs in field lighting. But let’s get that new staircase!!

Russia defends territory in Ukraine!
USA- get out or else
Canada- get out or else
Canada , USA and others let put sanctions on them!
Canada- good idea
USA- good idea
Russia- as of 2020 we will no longer fly Americans to the Space Station! LOL
Oh by the Way Ukraine and a lot of Europe your Natural gas is going up!

Wholly moley did anyone else notice a smaller paycheck do to higher CPP and EI premiums?

Pineview Farmer, haven’t you heard? It’s all about building new stuff. Not ever about maintaining anything. It’s like you don’t even follow the news. *end sarcasm. ;)
It’s just not sexy to keep things up. Nobody gets a plaque, or a photo-op for routine maintenance. So we keep hearing about a new staircase, or PAC, or hockey rink, or whatever, but never hear about increased funding to maintain the infrastructure we already have. And maintaining the items they are building, or plan to build isn’t their problem, it will be the problem of future councils.

So I was reading the motor vehicle act regarding yellow lines. The two yellow lines on the hart at the mohawk are separated so I assume this means they are not a double solid but are in fact to single solid yellow lines, one for each direction. If that’s the case then you are only allowed to cross them if you are not impeding traffic, which tells me that no one can turn in to the Mohawk while southbound if it means the traffic following them has to stop and wait. Am I right or am I off in my interpretation? I think they should put up a concrete divider and solve all the problems.

RE: poultry in the city

The bylaw states that a residence in the city may not have or raise chickens and poultry due to it being an agricultural product.

OK then, that means that if they were to actually enforce that part of the bylaw, then they would also have to include vegetable gardens because raising vegetables for personal consumption is in fact an agricultural product, therefor not permitted within the city limits.

Any Flower garden that exceeds being a border like those large flower garden installations one sees in the up scale neighborhoods is also agricultural in nature and is prohibited by this bylaw.

This would also have to include the feel good projects of community gardens such as the one on Victoria street and the one on Strathcona avenue.

So, can we raise chicken and poultry, or are we in contravention of the bylaw by have a vegetable garden?

Hey Pal you sure are wound up today. Hey that yellow stairway is for a trip to the stars. Like Mayor Green.

I wish some of you guys would join us in Abby its just the perfect place.
Cheers

Something is really wrong with this city….not many streets cleaned yet….no lines painted on the roads….I feel very sorry for the new drivers in this city!!!

@Retired 02

In the survey of the best places to live in Canada Abbotsford placed one spot above Prince George. One spot!! Pg was 148th and Abbotsford 147th. It will likely drop below PG once Vancouver builds its new garbage incinerator and Abby is downwind.

It is unlikely the stairs will be built any time soon. There are $17 million in unfunded projects on the 2015 financial plans so in all likelihood it will be punted far down the road.

Loki: “OK then, that means that if they were to actually enforce that part of the bylaw, then they would also have to include vegetable gardens because raising vegetables for personal consumption is in fact an agricultural product, therefor not permitted within the city limits.”

Say what? You’re comparing vegetable gardens to raising farm animals? Nice try.

@ Dragonmaster
“Will the city do anything with the Bandstra truck parking overnight at the end of Domano?”

What would you need the city to do about this. Have you called Bandstra and asked. It’s likely an employee who takes his truck home at night to stay on schedule. What about all the pickup trucks, dirt bikes, atv’s that race through all the walking paths to get to that area. most with no helmets and driving around young children and folks walking thier dogs on the trails. This does not concern you more than a quietly parked truck?

Haven’t read anyone’s posts yet but I would like to comment on the city possibly allowing more commercial development along the Hart Highway near residential. My comment is “dear god, can’t anyone in the planning department see that the Hart Highway is a mess of residential and commercial”. Why is the city not changing it’s planning rules for this area?

Don’t really have lots to complain about, especially on a beautiful sunny Friday however, can ppl please learn the difference between Yield and Merge! Read the book ppl if you don’t know the difference. Also, all vehicles come equipped with a signal light.

Agriculture is agriculture. does not matter is it is vegetation or live stock.

@Loki: Doesn’t matter to who? Sorry, but your comparison is utterly ridiculous.

… or is it udderly ridiculous?

Does anybody know why the city crews were taking down the trees along the boulevard between Central East and the highway between 15th and 10th? Those trees looked healthy and were certainly solid on the stump. Why take down perfectly good trees?

Hope everyone has a great long weekend!

I read somewhere that someone wanted to negotiate with those Boko Haram folks in Africa. Then an editorial in the National Post yesterday about a swat team with armour and big guns being sent to that Quebec locomotive engineers house to arrest him. Apparently they intimidated his family and arrested him while he was working in his boat in his backyard. Made him and his buddies do the “perp walk” while on the way into the courthouse. He told the detectives a long time ago to just give him a phone call and he would pop in at the police station. Underkill and overkill respectively. Life IS full of contradictions, ain’t it?

Does not matter according to the bylaw as it is written. There is no distinction in the bylaw between live stock and vegetables. It says Agricultural products.

If you’re a friend of Mad Vlad Putin and you’re invested in oil in Canada .then you’re a friend of harper and not subject to santions . Kind of gives one the creeps .

@Loki: Are you being obtuse on purpose?

Interceptor, If you think the turn lane at the Husky across from the scales is a left turn problem, then take a look at the Husky at Chief Lake Road. The Chief Lake Road Husky is a nightmare of a spot for those heading north.

One could easily turn left at the proper left turn lane to Chief Lake and safely make the turn, but instead they all race to get ahead of heavy trucks at the end of the two lane and then with no signal light slam on the brakes to make the left turn right at the end of the concrete dividers onto the frontage road in front of the Husky. It is surprising we haven’t had a major pile up there yet. If you have a chip truck having to slam on its brakes because of a yahoo making the left turn then everyone else closely behind having just merged and not in view of the left turning yahoo is in serious trouble.

IMO the most dangerous traffic design in all of the PG area.

Ataloss, that is the problem with having fascist politicians making geopolitical sanctions that are selective. They are selected to harm those not connected with them, and turn a blind eye to their friends. The Germans and the French clearly are not on board with this, so its questionable how effective at upholding international law (the state goal) it really is. England is doing the same thing in their selective choice of who to sanction.

Palopu, I think you are exactly right on the 18th avenue transfer station. It just shows mind boggling incompetence that they would locate the administration offices next to a brand new transfer station, and then after the fact realize they might not like the smell, so close a well used service that should have been considered essential to the operation of the city.

If there is one thing PG city hall has become known for the last few decades it is a complete lack of planning past the next paycheck.

Not being insensitive, just trying to get a clarification on the bylaw.

We would like to have some chickens, and we would like this bylaw repealed.

As to understanding the matter, do you?

Residential garbage pick up is essential and provided on a weekly basis. If people are producing garbage in excess of what their bins can hold why should the city loose twenty thousand dollars a month providing a convenient place for them to dump it? Haul it to the hart on your own dime.

Loki: “As to understanding the matter, do you?”

I understand the difference between vegetables (a garden) and animals, yes. You’re attempting to say that they are technically the same under this bylaw. Good luck in court with that argument.

just wait till they start enforcing it now that the subject has been broached.

Here in Prince George, British Columbia, current bylaws state that outside rural zoning, keeping poultry is prohibited. We’ve created this page to see if anyone is interested in addressing these ordinances and/or bylaws or if there has already been some progress made.

For more information on backyard chickens see:

http://jkheneghan.com/city/meetings/2010/Feb/02092010_Planning_Backyard%20Chicken%20Keeping%20-%20Myths%20and%20Facts.pdf

I think the reason in large part why the city got rid of the transfer station is so they can collect the $6 fee per 100kg of garbage. They needed people to drive over a scale so they could implement the regressive taxation on garbage disposal.

It fits with the regressive taxation policy the city is moving towards of user pay, but in the case of garbage it is counter productive. We have a city hall that is elite in mentality and ignorant of those not on a city hall pay scale.

We would all like to live in a clean city that is not littered with garbage. If you take away the convenience to dump, then those that can not afford the huge per dump costs for cleaning up, and this stuff doesn’t make it to a dump, then we all have to live with the consequences.

Even at the stated cost of $20,000 a month to run a transfer station… we have 35,000 homes in PG so that is nearly $0.50 a month per resident to operate a functioning garbage transfer station and keep the city clean. When I am paying $3700.00 a year in municipal property taxes I sure as hell hope that the city can find $0.50 a month of that money to do their part to keep this city clean.

The excuses the city and its defenders put forth are nothing short of pathetic.

Hey Eagle, appreciate your almost daily and incessant rants about anything to and or anyone that has anything to do with authority. However if you are going to RANT, perhaps it’s a good idea to get your FACTS staright. The landfill that is collecting your $6 fee is not operated by the city, in fact it is operated by the Regional District. They are the ones that collect the $6 fee, they are the ones that used to operate the transfer station, and they are the ones that removed that transfer station.
But I guess when a person wants to RANT at the City…why let facts get in the way!

This is the one part of the Hart where I really wish people would use their proper lane. If you’re not making a left turn onto Chief Lake why not move over to the right lane? That way we have a better idea of what you’re about to do. Instead we get the race to get to the single lane first.

I wonder why the city doesn’t clean up the mess in the ditch just uphill from the jail?? What a great way to give new visitors to your city a good first impression. Weeds and garbage…..nice.

Jim13135 Why don’t you clean it up?

“Unsustainable Credit and asset Bubbles provide the existential threat. So-called “deflation” risk is a consequence of precarious “money,” Credit, securities, asset, economic and speculative Bubbles. At this point having resorted to rank monetary inflation (and with global growth dynamics alarmingly weak), Central banks have no solution. Trying to gauge how much time is left is the pressing issue for market participants.”

Charles…..so many bubbles……suspect we may have carbonation happening here. Think I’ll have a beer and forget it all.

Canada, what a country we have become! This is what you get when business and greed are allowed to prosper without sufficient regulations and oversight.

The following story makes me so proud to be Canadian, it brings a tear to my eye (sarcasm off).

What abcdefg said to Jim13135 is probably the most ignorant post I have ever read on this site!

Open your eyes you idiots!!!

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/motorcycle-collides-with-delivery-truck-in-east-vancouver-1.2646120?cmp=rss

There has been a crew of people cleaning up all the garbage you idiots have thrown from your vehicles in the Vanderhoof area this week. Their ditches are looking great!

BeingHuman, it won’t be much longer and the average (broke) Canadian will have had enough of the entire 1% program and will revolt unlike anything anyone has ever seen. Mark my words.

Obtuse. Ever since that word was used in the movie “The Shawshank Redemption”so many moons ago, it has become quite popular.

If you own land in the ALR and it is in city limits the city has no say in it.

The city of Vancouver has/had a homeless chicken shelter. Maybe they will let you adopt a few.

Out on the Hart here, near a gas station that doubles as a feed store, with very large yards, it seems crazy to have the same kind of zoning as downtown. I don’t see why people shouldn’t be able to raise a few chickens or rabbits.

But while we’re on the subject of annoying things, what is with people who play super-loud bass out of doors? It carries right through the walls.

and who’s the know it all Duhragon? Take a puck size valium and stare at your lava lamp.

Have a nice weekend PG!
