Fire Restrictions in Place for Long Weekend
Prince George, B.C. – The wildfire risk throughout the Prince George Fire Centre ranges from low to high, with much of the region considered “moderate”. But with the long weekend here, there are reminders about burning restrictions.
There are no campfire bans in the Prince George Fire Centre, but there are some burning restrictions.
Due to dry conditions and increasing wildfire risks, category 2 open fires (eg backyard burning) and fireworks are prohibited in the Fort St. John and Dawson Creek fire zones. The prohibition will be in place until the end of October unless otherwise notified.
Specifically, the prohibition on Category 2 open fires applies to:
- The burning of any material (piled or unpiled) smaller than two metres in height and three metres in width, including burning barrels.
- Fireworks.
- Stubble or grass fires over an area less than 2,000 square metres.
There is a fire prohibition in place in the Cariboo Fire Centre as well. This prohibition covers category 3 fires:
- Material concurrently in three or more piles, each not exceeding two metres in height and three metres in width; or
- Material in one or more piles, each exceeding two metres in height or three metres in width; or
- One or more windrows; or
- Stubble or grass over an area exceeding 0.2 hectares(more than 2,000 square metres).
The prohibition will be in place until Sept. 30, 2014, or until the public is otherwise notified.
And there are burning restrictions in the Kamloops Fire Centre ( with the exception of the Clearwater and Salmon Arm fire Zones)
This prohibition means there will be no category 2 or 3 fires in the Kamloops Fire Centre until at least mid October.
