Students Offered Support in Wake of Weekend Tragedy
Prince George, B.C. – It is back to school today for the graduating class at D.P Todd High School in Prince George, but it is not a normal day at school.
School District 57 has arranged to have counselors on hand at that high school and the others in the City, to help students deal with the weekend tragedy at Kwitzil (Gravel Pit) Lake.
The lake site was the scene of a party on Saturday night, one that got underway after the D.P. Todd prom was over. Police say there were hundreds of people in attendance.
A male and female, as yet not officially identified, perished when the vehicle they were in, went into the lake in the early hours of Sunday morning. What caused the vehicle to go into the water has not been determined.
SD57 Superintendent Brian Pepper issued a statement yesterday saying the party was not "connected to any parent sponsored prom or grad event, nor was it connected to any school sponsored event." He also said the tragedy will impact all the high schools in the City, and counselling departments at each school will be ready to assist those students who need support. There will also be support offered for staff.
The RCMP and BC Coroners Service continue to investigate the tragedy.
