Kwitzil Lake Off Limits This Saturday

Thursday, May 22, 2014 @ 11:55 AM

Prince George, B.C.-  Kwitzil (Gravel Pit) Lake,  the scene of last weekend's  tragedy where two  people died,  will  be off limits this Saturday night.

The RCMP are advising  there will be no access to that lake Saturday night.

RCMP have received information regarding a planned, unsanctioned graduation party this Saturday night at Kwitzil Lake.

“Given the horrible circumstances that surrounded this location last weekend, we believe we must take this action in order to prevent further harm and protect these youth” says Insp. Brad Anderson, operations officer for the Prince George RCMP.   Police are concerned the combination  of alcohol (a depressant)  and high emotions  in the wake of last weekend's tragedy, could  be a recipe for  further incidents.

17 year old Kendall Moore and 19 year old Craig Wood perished when the vehicle they were in , ended up in the lake.  How the vehicle  made it into the lake is still under investigation.

Access to the area will be closed to all persons in order to maximize public safety and minimize any chance of further incidents.

The RCMP are asking all persons that take part in activities this graduation season, do so by making responsible decisions.

The kids are going to party regardless of what we want them to do** (**in the interest of their safety). Would be nice if we could line up a couple of unused farm fields where they could have an after grad party. But in this day and age of legal action and liability it’s getting harder and harder to be able to teach responsibility while allowing them to get there yar yars out in a safeish manner. I just wish them all a safe and fun graduation and post grad celebrations.

closed this saturday….and then what, closed every saturday? this lake is used to party at every weekend regardless of prom parties, they will just find some other place to go…

When I read the title I assumed the closure was because they are still investigating. I don’t understand the reasoning that kids will be more likely to get in trouble at a party held at this lake than somewhere else. In fact, it seems that the tragedy might make them more careful, not less.

i agree, title misleading, one could only hope billposer

I understand the closing of the lake for the next little bit … emotions are running high and I think that, coupled with drinking, could make for a potentially volatile situation. Who knows what the “next little bit” time wise really could be … its just that the tragedy is still a too fresh and I think some time is needed to try and ease the pain. True, the party will just occur somewhere else but I think that particular lake needs to be left vacated for now.
Happy and safe graduations and proms to the kids out there. I was you one day long ago … enjoy these years.

I wonder if any of these kids’ parents would be interested in just sort of watching over them a bit, where and when they have these parties?
If they allow their kids to participate in them while underage, aren’t they still a little responsible for them?

There were parents in the area at all of these after prom parties. I was there 2 weeks ago at 2 in the morning and there were numerous parents on the road going in and up on the highway.
My thoughts are that I wouldn’t want to be there after what happened last weekend. I think that would be out of plain and simple respect for the 2 kids that drowned and the families that were left behind. I still say having a vehicle at these parties is dumb and should be stopped. Have parents at the road keeping all trucks and vehicles out of the immediate party area. Rent a gen set and run music with that. No trailers, no campers or RV’s. If you want to spend the night, prepare to tent it. When you leave to go back to town, you better be prepared to give a quick breath sample or you don’t get to drive away.

I like the idea of the farmer’s field as a place to let loose a little but not end up dead in the end.

Why, why, why

Every damn year we loose young people like this. What is wrong with the system. Are these kids led to believe they are invincible and can do anything with out risk and consequences. Who is teaching them these habits.

Teach them that they can die from poor choices in life! Tell them the facts, not place them on a pedestal, letting them believe the world evolves around them.

The Prince George PARTY Program (Preventing Alcohol and Risk-related Trauma in Youth) has been operating for many years. It is a non-profit program run by volunteers all school year.

Every Thursday during the school year RCMP Members, Paramedics, Emergency Physicians, Nurses, Teachers and Community volunteers donate their time to give students around the ages of 16-17 a dose of reality. Each school in Prince George and the surrounding communities are invited to the hospital where a number of presenters show them the potential consequences of poor decisions, driving while impaired, not wearing a seat belt, etc. They are given a tour of the hospital and shown what happens when rescuers arrive on scene, the emergency department, the ICU, and the morgue. The goal is to make students think about how their lives could be changed or lost by preventable trauma.

Unfortunately, you can’t get through to everyone. But there are those out there who try to get through and educate students while before these sorts of tragedies happen.

I’m sorry to sound negative folks but there are many who remember the great Charlie Vandecaveye who held a farm party about 12 years ago out in Newlands. A school bus was hired with a class one driver. A security company was hired to patrol the grounds all night and 6 first aid ticket holders were present. I supplied the music. Even then, one teen over drank and wound up in the hospital overnight with alcohol poisoning. KIDS AND ALCOHOL JUST DON’T MIX!!!! There is a reason the law states alcohol consumption is illegal under 19. We tried to prevent any possibility of the kids taking their wet-grad underground and something like Kwitzil Lake happening. He Spoke is right. It is our job as boring old school parents to teach our kids that they have to grow up. My 18 year old already thinks she knows more than my wife and I. This could have been her! My sincerest condolences to the Moore and Wood families.

I just think they should put up some kind of posts or a barricade to make it impossible for a vehicle to reach the lake. It should have been done years ago as that is a common party spot.

When I was graduating there was a party out at Crystal Lake and I knew a guy who had his truck role down the hill towards the lake and lucky for him into a tree while they were sleeping in the box. It was obvious that someone pulled the e-brake on them. It caused a huge commotion of pandemonium at the time. Around 4am after half the party is passed out anything can happen and often does at these kinds of parties. Best to camp in a group of close friends and leave vehicles securely locked up.

I think at Gravel Pit Lake it has always been dangerous due to the fact if one does not know the area, and its dark, you can not see the edge of the substantial drop off to the lake until its too late. Only thing to stop a drunk from driving into the lake would be RV’s parked around the perimeter, or have a barricade to the edge of the lake. Very well could have been a simple case of someone disoriented leaving the party and made a wrong turn not realizing the lake was there.

Sad case of an ill advised silly overreaction to an unfortunate event.

A police state can’t be far behind! What a ridiculous waste of taxpayers money!!!
