Behind the White Wrapper…WIDC

Monday, May 26, 2014 @ 3:01 PM

WIDC west side revealed – photo submitted

Prince George, B.C. – The west side of the Wood Innovation Design Centre in Prince George  is visible.

The construction project has been "under wraps",  encased in a white wrapping  since last fall.  Today,  some of the material was removed,  exposing the west side of the  new facility.

Construction  is still a long way from being complete, as the  building is not  expected to be ready until  late this year.

Now that UNBC has cancelled it’s engineering program due to the government deciding not to fund it, who is going to occupy the space?

Walking by, there appears to be a lot of concrete wall paneling, which will quickly be covered over by wood fascia. Is this actually wood construction?

Looks to me they should hire Trim_Line to put a few graphics on that side of the building. IMO. First glance looks like jail cell doors on an early U.S.S.R. gulag.

Seeing this isn’t the official unveiling, don’t let this photo sway your opinion. It’s same architect who designed YXS, so be patient. You’ll like it when it’s done.

What is the purpose of this building again? Who will be occupying it?

I’m guessing the wait will be worth it. I’m sure 250 had a picture of the inside a while back with a bunch of people wearing hard hats and from what I could see it looked awesome. Can’t wait….

Not sure what you will see on the inside. As far as I know all the laminated wood panels will be covered with gyroc or panel board, just like any other office building.

The Architect of the Nine (9) story wood office structure in East London England had the following to say about cross laminated timber (CLT) panels pieced together to form load-bearing walls and floors.

**The beauty behind the whole system is that its incredibly simple** say Waugh, adding that it took the four-man KLH construction crew just 27 days to erect the nine-story structure, The construction time savings helped to compress the overall project schedule to just 46 weeks–40% shorter than if the team used traditional concrete frame construction, according to Waugh. **The guys building the structure come from the same factory where the timber panels were manufactured, so the understanding of the material is constant throughout the process**

Would be interesting to see how long it took us to get this structure up, and how long it will take to complete, compared to the East London (9) story building.

New City Hall maybe ?

It doesn’t even look like it is built of wood?
Why are there balconies?
It looks dumpy like the rest of downtown.

Wrappings are off and it isn’t even Christmas in July! lol…looking good. I hope the Finnish delegation has some constructive feedback. UNBC needs to stay on board IMO…

Sure, there are issues with how others’ have done things but let’s deal with the hand we’ve been given. Ok kids? ;-)

Not much sunlight on George. It won’t be long until moss starts growing around those parts.

Balconies? Uh that looks like construction platforms to me. It’ll be a nice welcome. To downtown. Can’t wait!

This was the 10 storey wood building for downtown Green said was coming.. then it is a 6 storey building.. like her career.. always coming up short…..

Will be nice building but always the question what will occupants ? move all the Government office to the center?

The window contractor and installer hired a crew for twelve bucks an hour to install the windows.
On the construction of UNBC, the Court House, the Provincial Pen and other projects in the early nineties were making over twenty bucks and hour!
NOW THATS PROGRESS EH!
