Prince George, B.C. -Prince George Highway Rescue Chief, Keith Laboucan has been officially  recognized for his years of service with this year’s Public Safety Lifeline Volunteer award for Road Rescue.

Keith Laboucan has been responding to highway and road rescue emergencies and serving his community for over a decade.

“Keith Laboucan is an example of the leadership that makes our province strong,” Bond said. “This is a significant provincial award recognizing his commitment and dedication to keeping northern residents safe.”

Keith was named chief of the Prince George Regional Highway Rescue organization in 2009 he was nominated for this award by a colleague who stated: “He provides us with a moral compass to be better than we were before.”

Laboucan was one of several  emergency volunteers to  receive an award from B.C. Attorney General and Minister of Justice Suzanne Anton in a special ceremony at the Legislature in Victoria.

Mr. Laboucan first and foremost to the organization as a whole, congratulations, as Prince George Regional Highway Rescue does great work in the areas that have no organized coverage for rescue. However, my issue is having you stand up and receive a volunteer award .

Volunteer as defined in the dictionary and as most of us understand it to be –is a person who offers himself for a service without obligation to do so, a person who performs a service willingly and without pay.

Don’t you get a pay cheque form this organization?

Didn’t Highway Rescue buy your pick up truck from you, then turn it into a Command Vehicle and give it back to you for your personal use?

Doesn’t Highway Rescue pay for the fuel and insurance for this vehicle also?

Volunteer? Your call

In my opinion, this is a total mockery to all the individuals that volunteer endless amount of time and energy without any financial reimbursement and to have you stand there and accept this is repulsive.

Getagripreally, ya you should get a grip and learn something about the organization before commenting. Keith and his vehicle are available 24/7 and is full of equipment. So you expect that having a reliable vehicle available with equipment and all the costs involved including mileage should be on his ticket. I don’t think he gets a paycheck but will get reimbursed for costs. You do not have a clue on costs.

Search and rescue do not get payed but are reimbursed any costs incurred during training or operations. Do you have an issue with that.

So dude if you or anyone of your loved ones get tangled up in a wreck I expect you will tell him to get lost when he shows up with tens of thousands of dollars of rescue equipment to get your blooded ass out.

Congrats to the search and rescue crew. I feel this award goes to all involved.

To bad there was not a cheque handed to this group. Were they not about to fold not long ago due to shortage of funds to continue?

I am glad they are about. I have seen them in action and thought for years they got paid. Now if the northern area can get something like HEROS to join forces with the search and rescue.

Yes Keith is classed as a volunteer and as for his truck it does not carry any equipment it is for his personal use. How many calls do they respond to for most of there calls are cancelled before that even leave city limits. There are many volunteers within the Prince George area that are avalible 24/7 and are true volunteer and not paid to respond to fires, medical, rescue and car accidents. These teams respond to 100 plus calls a year. Why were they not recongnised?

Different volunteers and teams have been recognized over the years.

Hate to burst your bubble volunteer ff but most “volunteer” ff in the PG area get a monthly stipend or a yearly bonus. And that new tax break that no other volunteer organization members get. I’m not disagreeing with your comment just expanding on it. If you want the same award just get someone to nominate you. They just hand them out.

Hey hosers this is not meals on wheels volunteering. This is life and death blood and guts stuff. Can you guys handle it? Be grateful we have people ready to step up.

Congratulations Keith and also to all the members of the organisation. You are a much needed and appreciated group. Thank you.

Wow someone is jealous of Keith for working hard to improving PGRHRS.

When is the central interior going to get BC Ambulance helicopter service? The lower mainland has had it for years and the people of the north are funding it.
