Wood Stove Exchange Program Gets Funds

Wednesday, June 4, 2014 @ 8:56 AM

Prince George, B.C – It is “Clean Air Day”in B.C.  and to mark  it,  the Province has announced it will pump  $200 thousand dollars into the Wood Stove Exchange program this year.

The program offers incentives to B.C. residents to get them to  exchange their old  wood stove, for a newer, emission reduced model.  In the past in Prince George, the program offered a $500  rebate and the waiving of certain  installation fees from the Regional District.  Details of the program  for this year have not yet been  released.

Since the program started in 2008, the 6,000 wood stoves have been replaced throughout BC.

Another $100,000 has been awarded to the Hub for Action on School Transportation Emissions (HASTe).  HASTe helps students, teachers, schools and communities take action to reduce school transportation emissions for the coming year.

Plus, $100,000 is being awarded to the BC Clean Air Research Fund (BC CLEAR), providing research grants for air quality and health research.

In our neighbourhood several houses are burning wood with the old stoves. In late fall, during the winter and in early spring one can cut the outside air in the morning with a knife.

It should be made mandatory to use clean burning stoves in the city where people have access to natural gas and electricity. Cars must have by law catalytic converters in the exhaust system, but somehow it is still ok to pollute the air with carcinogenic smoke from burning wood.

Too many people with the ‘I’ll do what I want, screw everyone else’ mentality in this town.

I’d love to replace my woodstove with a pellet stove. I wonder if this program would apply to me as well.

Coming to a neighbourhood and a campsite near you! Campfire filters!
Rolls eyes.

I like wood smoke, it smells way better than car exhaust!

Next up a bylaw on smoking bbq’s.

“Too many people with the ‘I’ll do what I want, screw everyone else’ mentality in this town.”

More like too many hypocrites JB! Complain about wood stoves while puffing on their smokes.

So if I don’t smoke, I’m allowed to complain about woodstoves? Oh right, those ‘I’ll do what I want, screw everyone else’ people don’t care either way.

Only if you don’t smoke, don’t camp, don’t roast hot dogs in the back yard on your open fire and drive an electric car or ride a bike everywhere. Then you can complain about smokey wood stoves and Forest fires….maybe.

JB: “Too many people with the ‘I’ll do what I want, screw everyone else’ mentality in this town.”

Precisely! Thanks!

There is NO Way I am going to stop complaining if an avoidable condition directly affects my health!

I have allergies which get worse when the thick smoke is oozing out of the neighbours’ crude woodstoves!

I apologize for being concerned about my health and also for my inexcusable suffering!

BTW, No Way am I going tom move because I am very considerate of my neighbours!

NoWay: “Only if you don’t smoke, don’t camp, don’t roast hot dogs in the back yard on your open fire and drive an electric car or ride a bike everywhere. Then you can complain about smokey wood stoves and Forest fires….maybe.”

So, in other words, you’ll do what you want, screw everyone else.

Better go find yourself a bubble to live in PG. Do you drive a car PG? If so you are polluting my air too and your neighbours air.

Did you just discover this is a Me Me Me world JB?

I don’t have a wood stove but I do have a fireplace and yes I will light it if I want.

NoWay: “Better go find yourself a bubble to live in PG.”

Absolutely not! According to your opinion we must accept whatever comes along and obediently live with it! The majority of the people here are in favour of cleaner air and cleaner water!

You too will eventually change your attitude, either willingly or by government decree – for the greater good of the society we all live in, including you.

NoWay: “Did you just discover this is a Me Me Me world JB?”

Nope. You just proved my point. Thanks.

So you are all for banning smoking bbq’s and campfires too PG. Good luck in banning Forest fires. But you could stop driving your vehicle PG. For the greater good!

Sorry PG my fireplace adds a little heat to my house so I’m not going to stop.

Your welcome JB!

“Good luck in banning Forest fires.”

From the bizarre to the ridiculous!

Whatever.

Mercenary, we have had a pellet stove for about 9 years now. Love it because it is clean burning, and press a button it goes on and off. The only thing is is that when your hydro goes out, it doesn’t work and that the price of pellets continue to rise. They were $1.50 for 40lb bag years ago and now are $5.00 a bag…even though we have pellet plants just outside city limits!! Still, a nice heat source on a cold winter’s day.

Pellets are still 210 a ton or 50 bags, have been the same for the five years I have owned a pellet stove

Hey slinky ,, how long does the ton last you when you have it going and how often ?

PG: “From the bizarre to the ridiculous!

Whatever.”

I was going to say something similar, but NoWay’s iron clad logic rendered me speechless! :-)

just keep on a payin those ridiculous hydro rates everyone. WITH more to come. SEEMS like that is the real problem one should be addressing. I will burn wood thankyou very much, it makes my old bones feel good when the temperature dips.
