Teachers Could Strike As Early as Tuesday
Prince George, B.C.- News1130 in Vancouver is reporting that the BCTF plans to serve strike notice and that a full scale strike could start as early as Tuesday, June 17th. .
According to the report, the BCTF has issued the notice to its membership.
While the official announcement is expected to be made at a news conference tomorrow, the BCTF has also designated Monday as a study session day.
This could mean that Thursday, the 12th would be the last day of classes in School District 57, as classes were already scheduled to be cancelled on Friday as the School DIstrict experiences another day in the rotating strike schedule.
The BCTF was given a strong mandate to escalate job action with teachers voting 86% in favour of such a move.

Teachers walk out Tuesday…WooHoo….and then a general strike of ALL public sector unions in September!
Why not Monday? Oh yeah, Monday is a paid day off anyway.
Paid day off?
Teachers: Don’t forget to have a chat with your bank managers about your short term (hopefully) unforeseeable cash flow interruptions. Have your university (masters degree preferably) trained elementary or high school math teacher explain to you how much this strike will really cost you and when you might eventually get caught up financially. Good luck with your strike.
Paid day off?
Seems like the union is gambling on 1) being legislated back to work to gain sympathy because the big bad government is not playing fair. 2) hoping to gain parents support by playing the bullied victim.
I sincerely hope that the government does not legislate them back to work and only manages the provincials for the grade 12. 2 weeks won’t be a big inconvenience for the other grades. Maybe next year they can teach all Wednesday instead of letting the kids out early as is the case at PGSS.
No EI if they are on strike. No pay ( for those who opted for the 12 month pay).
About time teachers walked out, the BC Liberals have had only one goal throughout and that has been to break the BCTF…… Bravo teachers for 86% support for a full scale walkout. ……There is no doubt the BC Liberals will not negotiate ANY compromise, as that has never been their goal, before the end of June, leaving the BC Liberals with two options, legislate teachers back to work or hope teachers are hungry come September…..After 13 years of BC Liberal induced recession perhaps its time to look at the priorities of starving British Columbians by giving huge tax breaks and subsidies to Multi-Nationals to harvest our resources for Global Corporate benefit and instead look at those resources for the benefit of British Columbia…..The shitty economy excuse is getting old, after 13 years of shitty economy it looks like that shitty economy is the economy of the BC Liberals …….. Look to a Province wide walkout of the BCTF and ALL public sector unions come September……….It’s only getting started!

Yes, paid day off!
Summer holidays start early this year. Good for them, now what will Christy Families First Clark do?
Maybe the government can use the savings to hire some more teachers. That is, after all, the point of all this isn’t it? The teachers want smaller classes and the special needs kids segregated don’t they? At least that’s what I keep hearing. Of course, none of their written demands will in any way shape or form affect class size and composition but I’m not going to let the details get the in way of my opinion.
Ronald Regan had a good idea for the air traffic controllers….maybe a version of that could work for the teachers?

That strike was illegal, this one isn’t.
First of all a big THANK YOU to the teachers and I stand behind them 100%. I no longer have children in school, and under theis Liberal government for that I am greatful.
I have the greatest respect for those teachers who stand up for what they believe in , their future, their dreams and most of all their ability to teach.
13 long years of problems created by the liberals is way to many . Stand your guard , do not succumb to this Fiberal government.
“I have the greatest respect for those teachers who stand up for what they believe in , their future, their dreams and most of all their ability to teach. “
You forgot to add “their pocketbooks” to the list. That is, after all, what this is all about. I feel sorry for the gullible people who believe the rhetoric about how this is “for the kids”. It’s not, never has been and never will be.
I also feel sorry for those few teachers who do actually care about the kids (unfortunately they are a dying breed); being dragged down by those who are in it for the money, the platinum benefits and the massive amounts of time off.
Our education system needs a complete overhaul; the same old, same old just isn’t making the grade.
Axman…..
Note that I said a “version”……how about first designating education an essential service?
Then follow the Regan example.
Who the hell would you want to overhaul the education system Axman? The Liberal government and the current band of Merry Men? They couldn’t manage a rabbit hutch never mind come up with viable alternatives to the norm. Their idea would be to totally privatize it and then we are completely screwed. The day that happens, there will be such a mass exodus of people from this province. Society is measured by how it educates its young and how it treats its old. I don’t need to be a teacher to give this current government a failing grade on both counts.

In typical bureaucratic fashion they could set up a task force made up of MLAs from both parties; a teacher representative from each school district and perhaps representatives from the district PACS.
I know, working together, what a bizarre concept.
That won’t change a thing. The BC Government wants to privatize everything. That way they can be off the hook for accountability and blame when it all goes wrong. Private hospitals, schools, clinics etc. It’s going to be great for the people with money (I have money) but that’s not what society is about.

I hope that whoever is picked for my mythical team goes into the process with an open mind and a willingness to change.
Maybe me and you should be on that team. I don’t think that you need privatization but I really think that they need to look at an accountability model where great teachers are lauded and bad ones are sent packing. The current model reminds me a little of the catholic church. Lots of great ones doing the job and a few bad ones that you can’t seem to shed.
To the teachers , and whiners, crying that Clark has her kids in a private school.. a better school than the garbage public education system… why don’t you move into the hood, or VLA area? Why do you need a better area for your kids, isn’t the VLA good enough?
You know, this way your kids can enjoy the wonderful world of diversity. Let us know how that works out for you.
