Regional District Settles on Pay Plan for Recycling
Prince George, B.C.- A decision has been made on how the extended recycling drop depot service will be funded in the future.
The issue is part of the fallout from the Multi Materials B.C. launching curbside recycling in the City of Prince George as of September 1st.
That MMBC move left the rest of the communities and areas within the Regional District of Fraser Fort George high and dry . The Board opted to extend the contract with Cascades, which looks after the drop depots at the Foothills Landfill as well as throughout the region until May of 2015. The real question was, who would pay for it?
After looking at a number of options, the Board has decided that as of January 1, 2015, the service will be paid for as a Sub Regional Service. That means Prince George taxpayers will not be covering that cost, instead, the amount will be dispersed among all other communities and electoral areas under the Regional District Banner.

I find it interesting that RDFFG ratepayers will be funding a service which is freely accessible to city and rural residents alike. It seems to me that a more equitable solution would have the city contributing to the cost of this lame attempt at recycling.
metalman.
Could someone correct me if I am wrong. I think that the following is how this new recycling system is supposed to work. Companies that use packaging to sell their products pay a fee to MMBC. This will be passed on to the consumer. If the consumer is from outside Prince George say Mackenzie MMBC is not required to provide recycling services. The recycling is done by the Regional District which taxes residents for this service. It appears that some residents pay twice for recycling. This is a sweet deal for MMBC. Money for nothing as the song goes. There must be a BC Liberal politician involved in the ownership of MMBC. They are obviously crooks.
I’m very surprised people aren’t asking more questions about this. Maybe they’ll wait until it hits them square in the wallet.
