More People Earn Over $75,000 A Year Working For The City

Monday, June 23, 2014 @ 3:45 AM

Mayor Shari Green isn't  seeking re election in the upcoming civic election but is expected  to take a run at the federal riding occupied by Dick Harris.  One wonders if her record  while in Civic Office would be up for  discussion during that nomination race.

You may recall that famous quote from Green, "savings of up to 10% in every department" when she sought election for the mayor's chair.

So let's look at what really happened.

In 2012 there were 229 people earning more than $75,000 working for the city . There were 661 earning less than that figure for a total cost of $47 million, and fifty thousand , one hundred and twenty two dollars.

Now let's look at 2013, there were 234 people earning over $ 75 thousand dollars , up five ,and 631 earning less than $75,000 dollars, for a total cost of $47 million, one hundred and fifty six thousand , six hundred and seven dollars.

So the city was able to increase the size of its management and high end wage earners  between 2012 and 2013, while cutting the regular work force. Wages actually increased  from  2012 to 2013 ,  around $106,000 dollars.

So much for the savings of up to 10% in every department.

It speaks volumes about a lot of promises and a fancy election campaign, which saw the most money ever spent to elect a Mayor  in Prince George.  The expensive campaign worked…well  at least once.

It will be interesting to see what kind of rhetoric we can expect from Shari Green when she runs for the nomination for the Conservatives  in the Cariboo- Prince George riding.

Accompanying her to the annual general meeting in Calgary last fall, was none other than Marshall Smith, who you may recall said at the time Green was running for Mayor that he  wasn't her campaign manager he was just " helping out".

One wonders aloud whether he was ever involved in the discussion in taking control of the riding executive, or has he just been" helping out"  Shari in her run for the Federal nomination?

Careful what you wish/ask for..
It is quite clear IMO that Green/Marshall are “Tell the people (masses) what they wanna here” …
full of themselves and I call BS on these two!

Shari Green running for Conservatives? She doesn’t have a conservative bone in her body.

Good analysis Ben. Let’s hope everyone remembers this on election day.

Can anyone tell me anything postive Green has done for us since in office ? Everything she touches turns to Sh*t and costs us money, which then costs us more to pay for her incompetance..

Now picture her doing the same to the riding/country if she would happen to be elected..

Easiest NO vote I will ever cast.

75,000 is not a lot of money.

I can tell you what good she has done….

She held the line with the union and delivered the lowest contract in the province.

The core reveiw resulted in a 58 million dollars cost savings for the peewee price of 300grand.

The roads are costed out and a record number are being paved.

Infrastructure is now fulley costed.

The debt is being paid down for the first time.

My taxes were held at 2 percent from the 7 they were going to be.

I could go on and on…..but no one here wants to hear it. You just want to bash!

Wow! What a misleading headline. The headline should read – “The Character Assassination of Sheri Green by Ben Meisner”. A convicted slanderer, like yourself, should be more careful. What is your motivation? Is your issue that she’s a woman? Rumours are you like to tell inappropriate jokes – Someone told me you made an inappropriate remark about Christi Clark’s breasts at some Liberal fundraiser in Prince George. Is your issue economic? This level of blatantly contemptuous drivel is not logical. And certainly not the stuff of a “journalist”.

$75,000 is a lot of money for a office job.

there where NO savings from the core review.. it was a waste of $350,000 when we have people on staff that can do the job they contracted it out.

a record number where paved.. after many years of neglect it easy to make one year look good.

snow removal worst ever and getting worse with the increase in snowfall before the plows hit the roads

city parks are horribly unkept..

debt being paid down.. yeah right.. and the winter games will be cost free as well ( wake up and smell reality)

taxes went up 2 instead of 7.. and how is that utility bill looking ?? lol

I wonder if OU812’s real name is Stoltz as he is about the only one that I know who backs up the worst mayor that I can remember no matter what she does.

If it is Stoltz he should change his name to “IOU at least 812” with city property taxes due in a few weeks although he might pay on time this year with an election in the fall.

Indeed the character assassination has become so brutal on this site. There is no more truth to be found here. People just say what ever they want regardless of truth.

Ozenon0; Could you please elaborate on the $58 million in savings? As for taxes held at 2%, see PVals’ post.We can’t totally hold Mayor Green responsible, but she was part of the former administration that ignored infrastructure & other City problems. The fact that she ran on a platform of fiscal responsibility, then abandoned said platform in favour of repaying political supporters…
Personally I do not know Ms. Green, disapproving of how she had performed her political duties is not character assassination, it is a reflection of how badly she has performed. Much like a bad job review, nothing personal.

“0zenon0”

Not sure what part of the city you live in but I can tell you this.

-My land taxes went up.
-My city services went up.
-Last year was the worse snow removal I have ever seen. I used my snowblower all winter so I could get my car out of the cul-de-sac onto the compact streets were I would manage to negotiate my way through the goat trail hoping that I wouldn’t run into another vehicle before meeting the highway. My wife slid down a hill which never received any sand all winter, luckily without incident.

So,yeah as a tax payer shouldn’t one expect a simple service as snow removal and sanding for what he pays? or is that asking to much.

Yeah, $75,000 is a little steep in wages for a person to hold a shovel.
Sawmill industries base rate is $55,000 a year.

“So much for the savings of up to 10% in every department.”

I think she probably meant to promise a 10% reduction in service in all departments.

“Indeed the character assassination has become so brutal on this site.”

One would have to be in possession of character for assassination to take place.

” People just say what ever they want regardless of truth”

you are right 0zenon0, because you certainly did.. your list of mis information is a perfect example of that.

I’m confused Ben, you think that too many people get paid too much at city hall and blame the only Mayor in the last who knows how many years who reduced staffing and acheived a net zero union contract. It doesn’t compute. You couldn’t be that ignorant so – what’s the angle? You are nicer to convicted murderers on this site than to her. There must be another reason you are so bruatlly biased. Please tell me it’s not because she is a woman. I get the union lobbyists, I get the Haldi Haters and I get the subsidized Pine Valley golfers but if your only reason is that she won’t talk to you – I think it’s pretty clear WHY she won’t talk to you.

Mavrick64: I guarantee those many, MANY folks earning over 75K a year in the forest industry aren’t holding many shovels.

I should know….I haven’t been on the end of a goon spoon for quite some time now and I earn 25% more than 75k….

75k is NOT a lot of money folks. What it does allow is someone to live somewhat comfortably up here in the north.

I think the main point Ben is trying to make is that the promises that this lady made in order to get into office just weren’t kept. Surprise, surprise…… There really isn’t anything new there. Politicians lie through their teeth all the time. What amazes me is that we’re surprised when it happens.

What does happen in the private sector is that if you don’t meet job expectations, they fire you. We need to be able to do that with politicians. There has to be some real world consequences for those who do not meet expectations. Don’t let your mouth write cheques that your body can’t cash.

Mercenary; Just stating that starting wage in the sawmill was $55,000, that is a hell of a lot less than the starting wage for city workers.

Heck today the public is complaining about city workers making to much. Tomorrow it will be the teachers making to much. My advise to all you complainers is go apply for a job at the city. If you can’t get that high paying job at the city, you might want to go back to school and get a teachers certificate and teach.

OU812

You should run for mayor. Even you could do better.

Doesn’t matter who we elect. It goes like this.

Candidate – I promise blah blah blah for the good people of Prince George.

Candidate goes to Ottawa and the Prime Minister says – shut your mouth – we’ll let you know what you think when we need you to know it.

Well, she was a former student and I wish her well. Mr. Meisner …..you and Hart Guy should go back to your Doublewides and fry something!!

all I can say to OU812 is pot meet kettle.

@taxpayerteacher

I thought you had a new teaching position in Sweden? Did they rescind the job offer or do you prefer walking the picket line till Halloween? Hope you have some nice Birkenstocks, I think you will need them!

Iker and company sure shot themselves in the foot, pinning all their hopes on Vince Ready who would not touch this dispute with a ten foot pole with the crazy demands the bctf has made.

taxpayerteacher.. I am guessing you didnt teach her math.. because spending more does not mean a %10 cut. and if you did teach her math…maybe try something else :)

“Can anyone tell me anything postive Green has done for us since in office ? ” .. yep, she said she wasn’t going to run for another term.

That election wasn’t about getting Shari into office, it was about getting Dan out of office.

Bravo HUH.. Something good for, sure …lol
