Remuneration Committee Already at Work

Thursday, June 19, 2014 @ 3:58 AM

Prince George, B.C.- The work of the  Advisory Committee on Council Remuneration has already begun.

Five people have been appointed to the  Advisory Committee on Council Remuneration, they are:

  • James Blake ( former chair of the PG Airport Authority Board)
  • Jennifer Brandle McCall (former GM of the PG Chamber of Commerce)
  • Alain LeFebvre
  • Adele Schlick, and
  • Trevor Williams

The five are tasked with  comparing  Prince George Mayor and Councilor  salaries with those in peer communities, and making a recommendation on  whether or not the salary should be increased.

The committee has already met once,  and plans to have two more  meetings before submitting its report,  expected to be put before Council  as early as July 7th.

According to the most recent financial report, (2013) Councilors in Prince George received $31,395.00, of which $10,465.00 is not taxable.  Councilors also received $55.56 in benefits.

The Mayor’s remuneration last year was $101,297.40  (including a  vehicle allowance) of which $33,011.04  is non taxable.  The Mayor also received $5,522.68 in benefits.

Reviewing the salaries of Mayor and Council is a legal requirement as set out in a bylaw.  The review must take place in the final year of the Council’s term.

Time to scrap that bylaw and just give them a cost of living (tied to inflation)increase annually. Seems silly to hunt for “peer” communities when we really have none.

Why are some of the people on this list making recommendations when they also worked on the platforms to get some of the council elected.
If you work to get people elected you should not be on a committee to decide raises for those same people.
You know that it is a conflict and should not be involved

Council doesn’t make much conidering their responsibility.

Even the Mayor isn’t even close to the highest paid City employees.

The Mayors job is not a full time job.

We pay our Mayor more than other Cities of similar size.
