Prince George, BC – It's a sport that's already taken hold in southern parts of the province, but the Prince George Youth Volleyball Club is hoping to generate local interest in beach volleyball…

"The beach (game), to me, is something we're missing," says PGYVC President, Dan Drezet.  "It's way more contact.  The kids get a lot out of it – it makes them a better indoor player."

This past weekend, the Club hosted its first beach volleyball camp, with 35 kids taking part over the course of the two days.

PGYVC brought in former World Junior Beach Volleyball bronze medallist, Christof Orman, to put the young players through their paces at the sand courts in Fort George Park.

Orman, a native of Poland, played indoor volleyball at both Vancouver Island University and Thompson Rivers University as he worked his way through school.  Now based in Vancouver and back to focusing on the beach game, Orman runs Performance Volleyball, teaching his skills and passion for the game to others.

Drezet says the local club has a close connection with Thompsons Rivers University – last year, six locals were playing for the men's team – and that connection led to Orman and he was happy to come Prince George.

Drezet is hopeful the camp and two tournaments planned for later in the summer will help kick-start a beach program.  While the tournament dates have yet to be determined, he says one will coincide with the club's annual camp featuring TRU's WolfPack men and second annual golf tournament fundraiser in late August.

"We're going to turn the whole week into basically a volleyball week in Prince George to get the kids ready for the volleyball season."

Stay tuned for dates, sign up will be via pgyvc's website.
