Friday Free For All – June 27th, 2014
Friday, June 27, 2014 @ 12:00 AM
By a 5-4 vote, City Council has backed away from its business licence fee for property owners with residential suites. Paving projects are underway on both city and provincial routes through our city. Canada Day next Tuesday means many are preparing for an extra-long weekend.
Today is your day to speak up on the issues that matter to you. It is time for the Friday Free For All.
You pick the topic, but, please, obey the three simple rules:
- Keep it clean
- Keep it legal
- No Bullying
Comments
Big day for the First Nations in BC with their new legal tool to protect and see value from their traditional territories.
Likely this means 8-0 Enbridge Northern Gateway will never meet the legal challenge ahead.
My pet peeve this Friday is those damn people that throw their old shoes up onto power lines that cross over roads. Its a curse to have to drive under them. One line up near Summit Lake across the highway has four pairs of shoes up there that have been hanging over the highway for over two years now. I seen a BC hydro crew working up there no more than 100 feet from this line all week replacing old power poles in the area and they didn’t do anything about it… I guess BC Hydro just turns a blind eye to this practice even when they have the equipment on site to do something about it?
Another thing I noticed recently is all the massive amounts of holes that were drilled in the pavement at the Exhibition Grounds to provide anchors for all the car lot tents. That has just got to be bad on the integrity of the pavement as a whole allowing water in to hydrofrack the pavement all winter. Who allows this kind of insanity… I’m sure the car dealers in town have no plans on paying for the damage to the pavements integrity.
The city just doesn’t care about maintaining infrastructure and facilities it seems.
Another case in point was the Monster Mash event a few weeks back. Big 16,000lb trucks jumping 15 feet in the air and landing on the unprotected refrigerated floor for the CN Center ice surface. I bet that does wonders for the pipes underground near enough to the surface to freeze it for hockey games? What would that cost to replace after too much of that kind of abuse? Don’t we have a better venue in town for an event like that… maybe need to rebuild the rodeo grounds? CN Center was way to small for an event like that anyways.
IMHO
Eagle one, with the monster trucks with the weight distribution over the huge tires they run the is not a heavy as you think.
Rock shows with all their equipement on the stage and with the floor covered in people would be more weight then the trucks.
Btw. sack the PAC
PAC
Referendum Please!!
Anyone notice how selective certain establishments are over dealing with products they never sold?? Take Costco..they won.t fix a flat if the tire was not bought from them…then there is Can Tire who charges arm and a leg for a flat if the tire was not bought from them. Practises like this encourages me to patronize stores that treat everyone the same. These two stores will get less of my business from now on..
It was about time the Supreme Crt got balls and made a decision about Land Claims.. Settling it would be good for the economy as the monies will stay in the region instead of being exported
Eagle: those holes in the parking lot are all completely and professionally sealed afterwards – every single one of them. You would be surprised at how much city staff do care, and they do an excellent job at protecting the assets at CN Centre and exhibition park.
Keep right except to pass!
Driving down the Hart yesterday I had to use the right lane to pass a slow moving Fortis truck. We looked over at the lone occupant and he had his head down working the phone in his lap. If you’re going to drive like an idiot you probably shouldn’t do it in a marked vehicle.
Now if I can only figure out who to report vehicle 05981 to…

This practice make perfect sense to me. If you want excellent customer service deal with someone from start to finish.
For tires I deal with Big 0. They fix flats for free on the tires they sell. They lost that one real awesome counter guy they had but they’re still a great place to deal with.
Got a call at 7:08 this morning from Microsoft to talk about my Computer.

Here is an interesting blog about those so called anti-oil ante everything protest groups. Should make the honest thinkers think and information you will not see in mainstream media. Have a cruise through this site.
Should make peeps throw up his breakfast.

Nice too see my comment was deleted. Too much exposure hey??
This towns just full of beautiful lies
A local RCMP officer was busted for keeping trophies from every bust he ever made.
Think the system isn’t corrupt?? Go sit at Tim Hortons and listen to the way they talk.
Lawyers/Cops making deals on cases. Comments being deleted only proves it.
About the land claim settlement…agree that the land claims issue should be settled but had a question. Now that First Nations have been given the title right, how does that affect people who wish to use Crown land for recreation (hiking, fishing, hunting)?
Granted, this may be down the road, but my interpretation is that Crown land that is claimed by a FN will have the same protection as private property. SO with 100% of BC claimed by First Nations, does that mean that BC will become private property of the various bands? Will that affect fishing and hunting licenses? Will there be additional fees to go off road? Lots of questions
Fedup2014 , where are you moving to? We have one more year in this smelly burg, then clean fresh air and no pg infrastructure to support for us as well.
If they now legally own the land, do they pay property tax like I do on my private property? Has this land somehow now magically been taken out of the BC land base. Yes, there are lots and lots of questions and possibly ramifications with this ruling for the future.
When I profit from the resources on my land I pay taxes and do not qualify for social assistance of any kind. Will the same regulations apply to First Nation people when they get title to the land and begin profiting? The Canadian tax payers should not have to continue support to any groups who are capable of supporting themselves.
@seamut, nice link!
Doubt that Peeps will have much to say about it though. As you suggest, might be hard to speak with a mouth full of barf, haha!
Just wondering when the city will start painting some lines on the streets. No lines painted on the crosswalks even in front of the schools. Another thing I find strange is the Service BC building on 1044 5th Ave. does not have a public washroom. The wait times can be quite long sometimes. I was in there the other day and a customer was told he had to go down the street and use someone else’s bathroom.

Can’t blame them for not having a public washroom since most users are disgusting pigs who shouldn’t be allowed in public.
axman I think the pigs are the owner’s that do not maintain their bathrooms.
With Insite, the safe illegal drug injection facility coming soon to downtown (maybe near the Service BC place) you can ask your MLA Shirley to mention a plan for washroom installed within the new venture. Problem solved.

Probably a combination of both.
wow axman, every single resident of this city that has a driver’s license has to renew the license at Service BC. anyone that needs a care card replaced has to Service BC. Kids trying to get their learner’s permits, people needing birth certificates replaced, etc…
“most users are disgusting pigs who shouldn’t be allowed in public.” what a comment. oh, you must mean people who are less well off than you, right? it must be great to be so much better than everyone else, almost like local royalty. it’s probably frustrating when you walk into a building and nobody bows down to you and your infinite wisdom. i’d rather spend time with any one of those ‘pigs’ who have some sense of kindness than a complete a-hole like you. but you probably have lots of friends?

No, I mean, “most users are disgusting pigs who shouldn’t be allowed in public.”
That you read something into it that isn’t there is your issue, not mine.
PS, your statement, “…every single resident of this city that has a driver’s license has to renew the license at Service BC…” is incorrect.
PPS, Cleaning up after oneself -whether it be after using a public washroom, walking your dog, driving down the street or even eating a sandwich in public- has absolutely nothing to do with being, “…less well off…” It’s all about accepting personal responsibility for our actions and that is, unfortunately, something that doesn’t happen all that often.
So yesterday the PAC wants to set the record straight, the next day the city reports one how far they are behind in infrastructure upgrades and money.
Hard to make this stuff up.
Straight2thePoint, you’re sounding a wee bit prejudiced about the RCMP. Had some trouble with them in the past?
Please don’t forget that RCMP members are human too, just like doctors, lawyers, mechanics, dentists, etc. etc.
I bet someone could listen in on one of your coffee shop conversations and not like something said by you.
bornandbred you have it right we are all only human and all full of it from time to time.
RCMP have a tough job and often get no respect. Sure some of them are not so great from time to time, just like the rest of us.
Thats life. Have a great Friday everyone.
Nope just an old tax payer, floored my a conversation that was over heard.
People like you are the reason why corruptive actions get looked over.
You’d make a great politcian ;) or an enabler.
WOW… So the city is complaining how it’s running out of cash, right. But yet the clowns on counsel have decided to go ahead with the bulbing and two way of Fourth Ave. 133% over estimated costs, and they wonder why we the residents are getting steamed over rising costs of everything that the city does. Clearly there’s no one at city hall or on counsel who has to live within a budget. Why the heck are we wasting money on this bulbing BS, it doesn’t really serve a purpose (faint claims of public safety at intersections). How about getting the Mounties to do some speed checks in the downtown, that would drum up some funds.
The big cost is the pavers that need to be put into the bulbed corners, and judging by the condition of the bulbed corners by City Hall and on George Street, they are not fairing too well during the winter. Gouges and missing pavers from the plowing. How about plain old concrete and be done with it, less labor to pour concrete than to place pavers. I would also bet the cost would drop big time. I think the city needs to put a hold on project spending until the election. This is just plain stupid.
Bulbed corners–don’t sound like a good ‘feature’ to have when it comes to snow clearing in the winter time. Must be a designer from the lower rainland that just moved up here. Give it a second thought , eh! Repairing damage done by plows constantly means job security for the city workers,– oh well, it’s just money!! Our taxpayer money, you fools!!
professional and ntkr13, can you explain what a ‘bulbed corner’ is? I honestly have no idea.
Straight2thePoint, a wee bit judgmental too.
You are so far off who I am that it is funny.
I am saying that you shouldn’t judge a group of people on the actions of one. Stereotypes and generalizations don’t work well in any field.
Bulbed corners are a real pain in the A$$. They usually really impact traffic’s ability to make a right hand turn at an intersection.
So much for traffic flow, now you sit and wait!! But at least the pedestrians won’t get run over if traffic is sitting while unable to make a right turn!
Mind you, if pedestrians would obey the traffic control devices AND would get off of their phones, they might actually see cars coming at them!!
Since when has the designed any roads with snow removal in mind. Same goes with private and public parking lots.
To Mikmak- just think of the brickwork sidewalk extenson, outside of the Northern. A jut out of bricks, that makes it hard to turn right, and will get scraped and damaged “IF” a plow truck goes down it in the winter time.

Not my job to lift the blade…
Kind of hard to see a curb buried in the snow.
And we just did a drive on the boundary rd–a new ‘little’ round about for the truckers to drive over!! DUH!

Truckers had no choice but to destroy the Cameron St. roundabout since it was so poorly designed. Did you expect anyone at the city to learn?
Ain’t my job…

Ya, I wonder who you would report a Fortis truck and driver too. Let me think on that for the weekend and I will get back to you.

Tell you what. 11:00 AM this Sunday (the 29th) I’ll meet you in the parking lot of the YMCA; I’m the guy on the grey motorcycle. I’ll buy you a coffee and give you the opportunity to convince me that you’re brighter then a bag of nails…
You ride a grey Vespa? Are you going to be wearing your spandex? should I bring my camera? Or perhaps my wife for personal protection?

I’m serious. I don’t believe that violence solves anything. This is not a threat; it’s an opportunity.
This is almost as entertaining as WTF Prince George!

I’ll take that as a no? I’ll still be there in case you change your mind. If nothing changes, nothing changes….
Free coffee…and you can even pick the coffee shop! Feel free to bring your wife!
You haven’t had an invite to a personal hook up for quite some time there bater, must be losing your touch.

You are welcome as well. Heck, I’ll buy coffee for any one that shows!
The internet has made us strangers; I’m all for making us friends (even friends that disagree).
Comment was directed at the bater. Quite a while ago he was involved in a series of comments that was the funniest thing I have read on this site, unfortunately was deleted but sure was fun while it lasted.
What is with the pick-ups that belch big black clouds whenever the driver feels like it? I heard it is an aftermarket device called a smoke screen.
Hartley—aw, that’s just bug killer!

Somebody brought up the idea some time ago of meeting at Tim Horton’s with everyone wearing a name tag of their moniker.
Too bad I’m not in town this weekend, I would’ve been interested to meet a few of you.

Wood Wheaton and their “employee pricing” sale? How about next time you can have an “american pricing” sale? Guarantee business will be brisker. I suppose when pigs fly.
