Boating Violations on Ness Lake

Monday, June 30, 2014 @ 2:16 PM

Prince George, B.C.  – A boat safety  check on Ness Lake yesterday resulted in  ten violation tickets being  issued.

One RCMP officer and two Conservation Officers  checked vehicles on the lake to  ensure they met the standards as set out by both Federal and Provincial legislation.

The  violation tickets issued were:

  • 5 – Federal violation tickets for Fail to Display Vessel Registration Numbers
  • 2 – Federal violation tickets for Fail to Register Vessel
  • 1 – Federal violation ticket for Operating a Vessel without a Licence
  • 2 – Provincial violation tickets for Fishing without a Licence;

Four warning violations were also given.

Both the RCMP and BC Conservation Service members along with other partner agencies would like to remind the public of the five basic steps to safer boating:

  1. Wear your life jacket – legally you must carry one on board, appropriately sized for each passenger. But don't just carry it. WEAR IT;
  2. Don't drink and boat – boating under the influence is not just illegal, it's irresponsible and dangerous;
  3. Take a boating course – The law now requires that anyone driving a motorized boat must have a pleasure-craft operator card.  This includes personal watercraft;
  4. Be Prepared – ensure your boat has all the required safety gear and sufficient fuel. Be sure the weather is suitable for your vessel's capabilities;
  5. Beware of the cold water risks – watch for signs of hypothermia, beginning with shivering.

Simple, very simple but some have even simpler mind sets – common sence isn’t that common

Duck punt considered a “vessel”?

Well, isn’t that real police work..Going for the easy one on a double time sunday. Harrasing tax payers out boating. Hey guys, do some real police work and catch a drug dealer!

Took the fun out of boating ever since you needed a license.

Oh my god!!! Some one could have been killed!

The law is the law guys. They have to enforce them all….

Hope they didn’t shoot anyone in the back while doing their searches.

Having a licence takes all the fun out of driving.

You guys have it easy. I think I was stopped maybe once on Stuart Lake back when I lived in PG.

Out here, it’s a regular occurrence. That said, the waterways are also way busier out here and you actually do have to pay attention to no wake zones, channel markers, etc. After boating out here for a couple of seasons, I can actually see the benefit of learning all of that stuff you needed to learn to get a boating license.

Is all of that stuff needed around PG? Probably not, but you can’t make exceptions based on where someone lives. As Mercenary said, the law is the law.

LOL Sparky you get caught?

Yep harassing law abiding citizens on the water like they do on the road! Oh wait a sec they don’t charge law abiding boaters and vehicle drivers. Imagine that!

PS Impaired charge while driving a boat you lose your drivers license and I don’t mean the boat one!

The licence for boats is a cache grab . I can see if you have a large power boat or larger fishing boat . I have a small aluminum boat with an electric motor . Look out everyone , cause I am a menace on the water , I am gonna hit top speed and get across the lake ….. Eventually !!!

a “cache” grab? geez

I have a pontoon boat and a float tube for fly fishing…wonder if I need a license?

Yes and don’t drink on your pontoon boat’

Don’t drink and row?

Cash Grab!

So many dumb laws now nobody can keep up with them all. Poor kids trying to go fishing. They must be breaking at least 3 laws they do not know about. The do gooders are doing no good at all.

Drinking on your row boat on a lake is considered drinking in public and you will be fined! Did you know you can get an impaired charge on a horse?

Ignorance of the law is no excuse X-it!

What a joke. This country is screwed. What ever happened to freedom in this country. I believe in giving fines to drunks and stupid people out there. But fines and laws like this, is just a money grab . We need to start fighting for our freedom in our own country never mind fighting in other counttries . A family cant even go have a goood time at a lake anymore without been harrassed by rcmp

The “failing to disply vessl registration numbers” is the completly stupid one. I’ve boated for 40 years and haven’t diplsyed one. If it wasn’t on the boat when you got it, o well. Don’t even know what they are for, how you get them, why they need to be displayed and why non commercial vessels would be targeted by the boat nazis.

You guys are wound too tight. A sunny day on Ness and, if you read, not one alcohol related charge. So whats more likely: NO ONE had beer on one of the busiest lakes around OR perhaps the officers were being reasonable…. hmmmmm

“What a joke. This country is screwed. What ever happened to freedom in this country.”

You are free to obey the laws of the land! I bet not one family that had all their ducks in a row was ticketed!
