Man Pinned Under Vehicle On Highway 97 South Of Quesnel

Saturday, July 5, 2014 @ 10:47 AM

Quesnel- A drama is unfolding on highway 97, near McAllister , south of Quesnel as RCMP work to free a man whose leg is pinned under a pickup truck down a 100 ft embankment.

The accident occurred when a pickup, containing  a man and his young son, both from the USA  , hauling a toy hauler went off highway 97 and down a steep embankment.

The son was able to get out of the vehicle, while the father was trapped alongside of the truck.

When police arrived they smelled gas and became concerned, they however found the source to be  gas cans in the toy hauler and they were taken away to prevent a fire.

Because of the steep embankment, police  called in a helicopter to have the man moved from the bottom of the embankment  and into an ambulance. That wouldn't work, because the helicopter could not land safely on the highway, and so a farmers field was chosen nearby.

The extent of the injuries to the father are not yet known, the young son escaped injury.

At this point it is not known whether highway 97 will be closed .

BC’s famous ditches or embankments or what ever name you want to call them.

Up south of Chetwynd is the worst. A highway with no shoulders, not even enough room for a white line, nor even a concrete barrier, and then a 200 foot embankment with sharp curves on the road…. It would be unacceptable on any other ‘class ‘A” highway in BC.

Crazy idea, but what if everyone kept their vehicle safe and drove within their means? If you keep up on the pavement in between those little painted line thingies then you don’t need to worry about what the ditches look like.

Unless the road isn’t wide enough to even have painted lines, and its winter with a foot of snow on the road… then its best guess as to where the edge really is with on coming traffic hogging the center line.

They may have swerved to avoid hitting a moose, deer or bear. They may have had a flat tire…a medical issue.

But the lack of guard rails along curves with steep embankments is a troubling safety issue as well. Too bad we don’t have the wisdom to invest money in our own safety.

Good call interceptor, you concluded the cause of this accident based on the little facts that were presented in the story.

Nope I just concluded why I don’t get scared beside a deep ditch. I have no idea what happened here.

Ps – if you swerve off a 100′ bank to avoid a moose then maybe you need to rethink your driving abilities.

Cleaning our ditches of willows at triple the expense on a 60% grade …perfect
