Panel to Examine Implications of Tsilhqot’in Ruling
Prince George, B.C.- The recent ruling by the Supreme Court of Canada granting Aboriginal title to more than 1,700 square kilometers of land in BC to the Tsilhqot'in First Nation, is being called a “watershed moment” as it clarifies what Aboriginal title means, and how that could impact resource development projects.
CNC and UNBC are co-hosting a panel of guest speakers to share perspectives on the possible social, economic and political implications of the court ruling.
The public is invited t the event, set for Wednesday from 11:30 to 1 at the CNC atrium.
Panelists will include Lheidli T’enneh Chief Dominic Frederick, Carrier Sekani Tribal Chief Terry Teegee and Mavis Erickson, a respected local Aboriginal lawyer and activist for Aboriginal women’s rights, UNBC professor Paul Michel, and Marlene Erickson, CNC’s Acting Director of Aboriginal Education.
“Understanding that time will be needed for legal analysis and interpretation, it is important to begin the dialogue in a positive way and leave the door open for further discussions as more information becomes available,” said Marlene Erickson, CNC Acting Director Aboriginal Education.
Erickson adds that the ruling comes at a time that many First Nations face a crisis in education and employment, issues which are being magnified by the resource development boom in the North.

Not a lot of balance on that panel.
I would ask 2 questions:
how does the decision make for a brighter future for First Nations individuals, and does it make investment in development of BC’s natural resources more or less likely?
Time will tell.
CL
So does mean no more financial support from the taxpayer. They can develop “their” land and support themselves?
Sea mutt, don’t be so silly, they still get everything and more now.
seamutt….. ever occur to you that a lot of Natives ARE taxpayers??? Just look around you
I would wonder what kind of access restriction might be imposed on people just wanting to go fishing or hunting or camping, etc. Will their title rights mean they can restrict recreational access? If title basically means private property then we are in for a lot of controversy over the next decade and beyond.
Excellent ruling by the Supreme Court of Canada. In the matter of “justice” it is about time we recognized Aboriginal title and rights to much of the land in British Columbia.
It was their land and we took it from them, plain and simple!
Perhaps now the most impoverished people in Canada can now eek out a living through natural resource revenue sharing agreements with the provinces and the Federal Government, it’s time to share the wealth!
Hope when they see seamutt on their land, they make him pay a fee, just for being ignorant, if nothing else
Seamut is right on. Let them develop or rent out their land to be devloped and gain a revenue source of their own instead of having the rest of us support them thru the tax man (this includes other first nation tax payers).
The problem is and continues to be that monies given to Bands all too often ends up in the pockets of the Chiefs, Band Council members and their families. Nothing filters down to the average Band member.
We give more than enough to provide for “the most impoverished people in Canada”, but we aren’t allowed to ask for any accountability as to where the $$$$$ goes.
Suggesting that these people can now eek out a living through natural resource revenue sharing agreements seems like a good idea, that is until you look at how well that has worked in north eastern BC and in Attiwapiskat. Chief Theresa Spence and her partner, Clayton Kennedy live very very high on the hog while their band members live in cold, damp shacks without heat or hot water.
But, as this link might suggest, perhaps that ship has sailed or soon will be.

It’s about time!!

Gee, in reading Fart Guys comments, one would think Aboriginal people have the fraud and corruption scandals entirely covered. But wait what about the 106 people charged in the massive Quebec public works fraud scandal? 106 people charged, and not one of them is Aboriginal.

Darn, and we thought fraud and corruption was a race thing, as Fart Guy would have us believe ;-) Racism, always a constant with some specific posters on this site. *Note: my keys are sticking tonight Hart Gay, my apologies.
peeps {being human } he never put all eggs in one basket ,,,, work get paid ,,,if you own it ??? enjoy the benefits:) …white black green yellow blue ,,, doesn’t matter ,, earn it in a respectfully way ,,, simple
Actually, according to several frequent commenters here, our Prince George city government is no model of probity and efficiency.
It’s true that this panel is not balanced in the sense of having people on opposite sides of the issue, but then as I understand it, the event is not a debate but a discussion of the effects of the decision. The debate has already taken place and, with this decision by the Supreme Court, the issue ha been decided. What remains is to work out the consequences of the decision and for the various interested parties to decide what they want to see happen within the parameters of the decision.
respect full or honest way ,,,hard work ,, nobody should get rich for doing squat :)
Hey stillsmokin don’t know what you are smoking but those on the reserves mainly the chiefs and the chosen ones should use their land to support themselves and cancel the Indian act.
Hey dud I have relatives friends who are native and are doing well for themselves totally on their own.
You should clear your haze and look into the native politics.
Peeps, your comments are getting rather worthy of an actual apology. You think that you get to say whatever you want and then go “oops, I apogize”?? Sorry, that doesn’t cut it! By the way, if you remember back when you were “People#1”, you got your fingers seriously rapped for your comments. On numerous occasions, I called you out on your comments and eventually you got band from this site as People#1, resulting with you now posting as BeingHuman (like we couldn’t figure that out!!).
Peeps, if you bothered to read my past comments, you would have noted that I have always advocated for a complete review of our government, government at all levels, Federal, Provincial, Municipal, First Nations, etc etc.
By the way Peeps, if you would like to meet for coffee some time so that you can call me Fart Guy to my face, please let me know! I’ll even buy the coffee!!!!
Peeps says “Note: my keys are sticking tonight Hart Gay, my apologies”
So after countless posts about equal opportunity, you’re love of people regardless of race, gender, blah blah blah you revert to calling someone “gay”. The final tiny shred of credibility you may have had is gone peeps. I actually feel sorry for you.
We give more than enough to provide for “the most impoverished people in Canada”, but we aren’t allowed to ask for any accountability as to where the $$$$$ goes.

Regular audits are done all the time, your government knows what is going on and chooses to turn a blind eye. Didn’t you notice how the audits suddenly appeared when Theresa Spence was on a hunger strike??
@ interceptor, thanks for pointing out that Peeps resorted to calling me not only Fart Guy, but also Hart Gay. Obviously I missed that one! I’ll blame it on being focused on the Fart Guy comment.
I agree with you that Peeps, BeingHuman, People#1. So much for being the stand up person defending the rights of the poor and the downtrodden, eh?
I long ago gave up on ever seeing any shred of credibility from Peeps!
So sHart Guy wants to meet for a cup of coffee, and is willing to buy me that cup of coffee. I have no problem meeting with you, just name the time, place and provide a description of yourself, not just for my benefit because there are so many people reading these comments who would love to meet with you in person!
For example, your seething hatred of unions and union members is legendary on this site, via your many vitriol comments, I personally know of some physically tough, hardworking, union members who would love to have a cup of coffee with you. Your distain of First Nations is well known on this site, I know a few big First Nation individuals (not just members of Chiefs and Councils) who would love to meet with you over a cup of coffee. But it just doesnt stop there does it sHart Guy? Now you go on record as liking interceptors comment, which was so offensive it was removed by this sites moderator; Me tax you long time. I personally know a few people of Asian descent who would now love to meet with both you and interceptor to have more than just a cup of coffee.
Get the picture sHart Guy? Through your comments, you attack, belittle, and offend whole groups (segments) of our society, yet when someone calls you on it you are the one that gets offended? So name the time and place for our cup of coffee, and bring interceptor along with you, because I am absolutely positive there are many, many people who would love to meet you two winners!!! Please respond, as I am very confident this cup of coffee will be a life changing event for the both of you!
Hey peeps – it wasn’t me that had the comment removed, but whatever. You should be used to being wrong by now.
