Prince George, B.C.- The fight to  rid the  City of Prince George of graffiti is stepping up.  No longer is the cleanup effort something that is focused in the downtown core, now it’s spreading throughout the community.

In conjunction with Groundwork PG ( a program to help men transition from incarceration back into the community), the City of Prince George will  provide the labour and supplies to  paint over graffiti on private or business property.  The property owner just has to fill out an application form and provide a photo of the graffiti to be removed.  A Groundwork PG Crew will remove the graffiti at no charge.

Graffiti is a crime,  and  studies have shown it can lead to  more serious  criminal   behaviours.  Cities that have adopted  zero tolerance for  graffiti have seen their  crime rates  drop.

So, in Prince George,   four key elements have been adopted to reduce the incidence of graffiti:

1. Eradication of Graffiti-,  with the implementation of  measures  to  remove  it,  and  encourage people to report  graffiti.

2.Public education – raise awareness in the community about the negative impact and costs associated with graffiti

3 . Graffiti Prevention – promote initiatives to better protect private and public property from graffiti vandalism

4 Identification of Tags and Deterrence of graffiti – implement measures aimed at identifying vandals and to hold them accountable for their actions.

Application forms to have the graffiti removed can be downloaded from the City’s website or picked up at City Hall..

To report Graffiti on City or private property, call 250-561-7600, or  make a report on line at www.princegeorge.ca

To report a graffiti vandal in the act,  call 9-1-1.

Would be nice if the property management firms and building owners in the core would clean up the buildings they own/manage.

While I don’t like the tagging, some graffiti can be a beautiful pieces of art. Why not give the artists a chance to do their “work” legally? Hold a contest or something and the winner gets the chance to do a nice mural with the theme of Prince George and have it displayed for the Winter Games.

99% of it looks like what they’re covering up above. Complete visual trash.

I am with the moose on this one.

If it was me, I’d let them decorate the skate park, however if it’s a gang tag or disrespectful then paint over it and let the next person that has something to add, add it. Those that decide to paint stuff where they shouldn’t are going to continue to do it despite the efforts of others to erase it; maybe if they had a place to do their work they wouldn’t do it where they shouldn’t…

moose: That might work if all the graffiti ‘artists'(hate to call them artists) took part, otherwise the disgruntled ones who didn’t win, would just go off and deface more property.

Those disgruntled guys are ones who probably won’t enter any such contests. I am talking about the guys who take pride in their work who just don’t have a place to do it legally. I’ve seen amazing graffiti in places such as Vancouver. I like all seeing all kinds of art and I think it could be something interesting. Just an idea.

Gotta keep after this stuff as best we can now that the Canada Winter Games is happening. It will all be back to normal after the closing ceremonies.

Was just in Vancouver and a beautiful mural of animals on the side of a pet store building had the kind of graffiti you see above all over the bottom as high as they could reach.

How do you get it off brick surfaces? You don’t want to paint over fancy textured brick…?

Nothing like giving the taggers a nice new canvas to practice on.
