Recycling Boxes to Be Delivered Soon

Monday, July 14, 2014 @ 3:49 AM

Prince George, B.C.- In less than 8 weeks,  curbside recycling will start in Prince George and Quesnel.

MultiMaterials BC (MMBC) has issued notices through the mail that residents of Prince George and Quesnel can soon expect to have two blue bin boxes delivered to their homes.

The notice from MMBC says while it will take time to deliver all of the boxes, “your boxes will be delivered to you before curbside collection starts on September 1”.

The curbside recycling  program won’t start until  after September 1, so  residents are reminded that even though they may get the blue boxes before that date,  they are not to put  them out  at curbside until  after September 1st.

You will find that inside one of the boxes will be a recycling guide and schedule for Prince George.  The guide outlines what can be placed in each box as well as other details of the program.

what about those of us who live in apartment complexes, do we get recycling boxes as well or do we continue to throw out everything.

You throw out everything? There are recycling drop offs all over town. At this point, “throwing out everything” is lazy and stupid.

Hope they come with lids, or there could be 6 inches of snow in them by the time there picked up.

doneright,

I do agree it would have been nice if they would have provided a bin similar to the small garbage bin. Makes more sense as well.

This is just another example of a big corporation doing things the same way they do them for the lower mainland. It really is sad that these mistakes are made every day by big corps.

I have a winter home in metro Phoenix A.Z. and the recycling bin is the size of the large garbage can here. It is p/u once a week an only cost $3.41 [us funds] a month

I live in Vernon and we have had these blue boxes now for about 6 weeks or so. They do NOT come with lids… as far as I have heard people in apartments get them as well because here in Vernon the seniors (who live in apartments and condo’s) have been upset at having to lug them down 2 or 3 sets of stairs. Many seniors also say they are too heavy for them to carry on their own and much worse when they have recycling inside of them. Plastic grocery bags are not accepted. Another big complaint is that the boxes are too big and people just don’t have the room to store them. I have seen people using them strictly for storing things in their garages and I must say… they’re pretty nice for that!

The picture looks exactly to be what we are getting and I don’t see lids so I guess it’ll be filled with snow but hey, its once every two weeks for pickup right? and I don’t know about you but I plan to keep these blue bins in the basement so snow doesn’t build up in them. Put them outside the dogs will get in them, bugs will be all over the place, the newspaper will be soaked from rain, naw, not dealing with that crap.

This recycling program is a good example of where political correctness overrides common sense.

And let’s not forget those windy days where you’ll see recyclable materials blown all around the neighborhood.

All it does is generate profits for MMBC. And we’ll all be paying for it at the till. This is basically a well disguised tax grab, which does nothing for the environment.

The unfortunate reality is that it takes more energy and resources to ‘recycle’ things than creating them from scratch.

As Ben would say, Stupid, stupid, stupid.

It’s about damn time!

I predict a world class clusterf***

I hope they do not remove the current recycle bins around town but if the do I guess us regional district folks will just start throwing out everything? Its a shame that a smaller centre like Quesnel can kick our behind at recycling

Emterra, who will be the local provider of this ‘service’ has had a lot of complaints in Winnipeg.

Here’s a good story showing what kind of company this is. And they’re coming to PG!

I moved here from the coast 20 years ago and we were recycling at the curb already. It was a shock to find it wasn’t done that way elsewhere. However, I have faithfully kept large bins on my covered porch, and taken what limited recycling allowed (paper, tins, and milk jugs) to the transfer station once a month since. I also have 4 composter bins on the go 12 months of the year. No issues, no problems. I will slide my own bins out and these ones in and continue. I have always been shocked at how few PG’rs recycle here. The number of overstuffed and overflowing garbage bins on my street are ridiculous. This new system will allow me to recycle more than I can now, so I am quite happy about that.

For what its worth – the recycling companies do not care if the stuff is wet – it is always wet at the coast and doesn’t matter. So stop fussing, people!

However, I agree that moving these bins for those with mobility issues is a problem. In apartment buildings in the big cities folks bring their recyclables down to the building garbage area and there are the appropriate bins to place things in including garden waste. These are collected and emptied weekly by the appropriate agencies. Why this isn’t being done by the new regime baffles me if it is true.

Once a month we have a full pickup truck load of recyclables to drop off. These bins will be useless and filled within days. Its amazing how the gov’t will let companies like this come into cities even with all the complaints for other areas.

my comment was tongue in cheek there hardcandy….
I recycle what I can but I have to find the recycle places, there is no recycling offered to apartment tenants…
so I asked and so far no answer…

I am open to the change and will try my best to stick to the rules/regulations regarding the “blue bins” but I also wish they had lids and wheels would have been nice as well. It is time that we made the effort to recycle and I must admit that I have not worked very hard at recycling in the past. Getting the bins down the driveway during the winter at our house (long and on a hill) will be another matter and I expect at our house the blue bins will end up being put out the night before as we are at the beginning of the garbage route, which will make life interesting if there is a big snowfall. I often move our garbage container down the night before during the winter months, particularly if there is a snow warning in place as it is extremely hard (impossible) to wheel our bin down first thing in the morning if there has been a large snowfall overnight. There will be growing pains at first but if people take the time and make an effort to work through the problems then hopefully this will be a good program.

Typical PG solution. We recycle in the complex where we live here in Abbotsford. We go to superstore buy some blue bags that we put into a garbage can in the garage. All the recyclables go into the bag and its picked up every Friday rain or shine and its kept nice and dry.

What the saying, “think big act small”. That’s your George.
Cheers

ahh – but wouldn’t life be grand if we had an Abbotsford winter. It is always a hoot when lower mainland people think they have all the answers for us northeners. Come North my friend and experience a real winter and all that goes with it.

This is a very stupid!! Mine will go to the street the night before and if is full of snow, well, I am not worrying about it. If they don’t take it, it will just sit there forever. It should be very interesting to see garbage blowing everywhere and I ain’t picking that up either, if it does!

Great for my grass clippings!

My family and I spent 30 years in PG and know how the City operates and its not about winters its about all seasons The cold doesn’t affect recyclables. It has effected your thinking.
Cheers

Talked to people in Vernon and they hate the new system. It only takes paper or carboard and if you have a package with clear window, that part has to be removed as it is not paper or carboard. So now their new system takes less than their old system.

One person has to drive the blue boxes down the driveway and then fill them up as they are too heavy.

I did see a wagon that blue boxes fit into and it has wheels for the summer and skids for the winter – more cost to us. Plus we will still be taking most of our recyclables to the centres.

My blue recycle bin is going straight into the grey wheeled garbage bin and then to the landfill where it will never be seen again.

not-so random you nailed it, that’s exactly where mine is going as well.
