Prince George, B.C. – Crews are still working today on the Buckhorn Lake wildfire, which is burning about 25 kilometres southeast of Prince George.

The fire is located over a hill just to the east of the lake, and because of the short distance helicopters are able to scoop up a load of water, fly over the fire, drop the load and return to the lake to fill up in just a few minutes.

Provincial Fire Information Officer Navi Saini says after the fire broke out Friday night, air tankers were deployed for the firefighting effort.  The fire covered 5.5 hectares late Friday, 7 hectares Saturday morning and now has scorched 12 hectares.

Saini says there are 20 firefighters, helicopters and heavy equipment being used in the firefight.  Work continues to build a guard around the perimeter of the blaze.  She stresses that no homes are threatened by the fire, the cause of which is not yet known.
