Weather record shattered

Monday, July 14, 2014 @ 3:43 PM

Prince George, B.C., A weather record has been set in Prince George today.

As of 3:00 pm the temperature had hit 32 degrees Celsius –  breaking the previous record of 30.5 set on this day in 2007.

Environment Canada Meteorologist Allan Coldwells expects the heat wave to continue through Wednesday before the heat begins to taper off on Thursday when highs will likely hit 25 degrees – just slightly above seasonal norms of 23 degrees.

He attributes the heat to a ridge of high pressure across Southern BC and recommends those heading outdoors to drink lots of water and to minimize exposure to the sun to fifteen minute intervals.

Coldwells warns peak heat times are from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm.

These measurements are no doubt taken at the airport while on my thermomeeter at home it was registering 37C in the shade.Right now it’s 35. That’s bowl life for you.

All Official weather readings are taken from the Airport weather station. Unfortunately because the airport is several hundred feet higher than the bowl it is typically 6-9 degrees cooler at the airport than the bowl.

Think we all know that……LOL

Hmmm but don’t we all know that hot air rises? Hence I find fault in your observation and do they take readings at the airport anymore when Environment Canada launches their weather balloons from their office at the corner of Ospika and Massey? As far as I know weather persons stopped doing observations and briefings at the airport a very long time ago.

Grizzly1 you would be surprised at how many people in this city actually don’t know where official weather measurements are taken or why they are taken at the airport

Based on what I’ve been able to find, you have to climb about 3,300 feet in elevation to see a drop of 10C.

I just don’t buy that the airport is 6-9 degrees colder than the bowl because of elevation. I’d say the bowl might be a couple of degrees warmer because of the all the asphalt and buildings, but the elevation difference is not large enough to cause a significant difference. I’m not even sure if it would be perceptible, all other external factors being the same (which they aren’t).

FFS… It’s warm but it’s nothing mind blowing. Can’t we just call it what it is – a nice weekend?

Who said it’s mind blowing? You have an issue with people talking about the weather? You seem to think a record hot temperature shouldn’t be talked about? NMG has is right, the difference in elevation is of no consequence, it is all about the concrete jungle holding in the heat. Why do you think lizards like to lay on rocks to start their day?

The measurement at the airport is not in direct sunlight or near heat absorbing material so it measures the temperature of the air, which is more accurate, they also use more precise instruments for measuring as well.

I seen 39 degrees in Chetwynd yesterday and 36 at Powder King. Never thought I’d see those temperatures in those places.

I’ve been in 45 degrees in Arizona. Thank goodness it doesn’t get that hot here.
