Friday Free For All – August 15th

Friday, August 15, 2014 @ 12:00 AM

Half way through  August, and  still no word on what will happen  with schools.

We  had good news on the water quality at Likely,  but were shocked to hear of the passing of Robin Williams.

And all  this while fires raged  throughout the province.

It is your turn to speak up on the issues which matter to  you.   It is time for the Friday Free for All.

This is not a chat line it is a forum for discussion on  issues and concerns.  Please,  stick  to commenting on the subject matter, and realize people will have differing opinions,  that is what makes for  discussion, but  does not  mean  it's ok to  call  someone names.  Those who do not  abide by  these simple  rules will  find their privileges revoked.

So:

Keep it clean

Keep it legal

NO BULLYING!

“Bank of Canada Governor Stephen Poloz is breaking with an almost decade-long practice by taking a speech to an annual meeting of financial economists behind closed doors.

His Aug. 25 remarks in Kingston, Ontario to the Canadian Association for Business Economics — whose members include representatives of the country’s major banks — are closed to media according to the group’s description of the event, and the audience will be told not to share the contents. The Ottawa-based central bank doesn’t mention this year’s event in its schedule.”

Thanks for the post charles, “behind closed doors” you say. The “audience will be told not to share the contents”.

Hmmm… along the same theme is this;

“The federal government is developing a commission to help restore public confidence in the RCMP – but it will be shrouded in secrecy.”

Planning documents for Public Safety indicate anyone working for the RCMP’s new Civilian Review and Complaints Commission will be required to take an “oath of secrecy.”

“This oath ensures that these persons pledge not to disclose any information that they come across in the course of their duties to anyone not legally entitled to that information,”

Wow… restore public trust in the RCMP while making none of the information publically available. Sounds like the Harper Government! What a bunch of Morons!

http://globalnews.ca/news/1503146/gag-order-to-be-imposed-on-new-rcmp-transparenct-office/

AMAZING the salaries the Chiefs and Councillors were making.. Comes across as the smaller populations, the higher the pay.. Strange… I have no sympathy for the backlash to come

Anyone here know a teacher or is a teacher themselves?? I have heard from more than one person that is friends with or related to a teacher and they have all said that they were told by the teachers they know that they shouldn’t plan on sending their kids to school until October at the earliest and possibly not until 2015. Can anyone verify if this is accurate and what is being told to teachers?

Touring other cities this summer one notices a stark difference in the approach other cities take to their appearance and the healthy atmosphere it engenders.

If one goes for a walk in Vancouver its hard to take ten steps and not be within arms reach of a garbage bin, same thing in the Okanogan, or virtually any other city in BC. In PG one would be hard pressed to find a public garbage bin near a park or trail head, much less in a public area downtown or elsewhere in the city. Why is it that in PG the cost to maintain public garbage bins is just too high for our city to consider, yet elsewhere this is considered a basic civic service?

Then if we look at public lighting and its like PG is still in the dark ages. In other cities parks are well lit, public areas with foot traffic are well lit, and major routes have adequate street lighting.

In PG we can afford to put in hundreds of light standards on the North Willow Cale Road in the BCR site and along the new boundary Road… over 15km of street light infrastructure for industrial roads that have no businesses operating and no vehicular traffic much less pedestrian traffic.

Yet basic street lighting infrastructure is lacking in central places like 10th avenue West of Central where we have a busy liquor store, a couple of fast food outlets, a pizza shop, hotels, and even the areas MLA office. Not one single light standard on 10th avenue west of Central and dark figures everywhere in the shadows at night… maybe the biggest j-walking street in all of PG. Nice dark area where I notice lately more hoodlums in the area hanging around the parking lot to the now private liquor store attracted like moths to light, but in this case hoodlums to dark shady areas. And we wonder why our crime rates are so high.

So how can the people of PG expect to get street lighting up the Hart (like it would be done for any other town), much less an actual side walk that services an area that makes up more than 20% of the cities population… when we can’t even have adequate street lighting on one of the busiest streets in the city after dark located right in front of the local MLA’s office?

I think its a pathetic effort by our city whether its providing garbage bins in public areas, providing safe side walks for non vehicular traffic, adequate street lighting for public areas, and we can’t even properly mow our lawns on the main thoroughfares most of which is over grown bush weeds and some of which spring right out of the meridians themselves the size of a family dog. The effort is not even there in PG IMO.

The city needs to put in proper street lighting on 10th avenue west of Central and the province needs to step up with proper street lighting and pedestrian sidewalk access up the Hart highway. The province needs to maintain its highway boulevards in PG, and PG really needs to step up when it comes to maintaining municipal property.

Moose I think the teachers will be out until at least October, for no other reason than the BC liberals seem bent on making them suffer at least some time with no pay. I think they want to break the union more than anything.

IMO plan on a long indian summer well into October this year.

Been camping lots this summer, great weather, have met some very nice people. Love this place :)

Yes, hasn’t it been a terrific summer? Its been awhile but I’m sure this one will be remembered. Have a great weekend everyone!

Thanks for sharing Charles. Interesting all the secrecy the private bankers get while setting Canadian economic policy.

Lots of talk on the financial web sites lately of a bubble break down in the works. No doubt this talk will be about how to deflate this bubble, and the attendees will have the 20/20 vision of what lies ahead and Canadians will be left guessing and chasing markets.

Another interesting development this week is the Ebola scare.

Earlier last weekend things were looking dire, with the spreed now extending into cities like Lagos with over 20-million people, and uncontrolled spread of the disease now eminent.

Of interest was all the wild conspiracy theories in that part of the world passing for mainstream news.

One theory went viral last weekend had this latest Ebola outbreak being a man made outbreak. They claimed it was engineered by the British military from a strain found in Central Africa, a form of new colonization through technology and medicine. They claim the British found the virus was to deadly and risky to experiment with on British soil with the density of populations on the Island, so they transferred the program to Winnipeg as a sort of microbial weaponization geographical isolation… being that Winnipeg is considered one of the most isolated first world bio-labs.

The claim is that the work at Winnipeg involving this strain of Ebola is operating under a Crown patent meaning that it will be owned by the Royal family for population control. Most patents by a pharmaceutical company expire after 55-years, but a Crown patent is perpetual never to expire.

So the Africans were making the claim that the source of the African outbreak originated in the Winnipeg bio-lab and that the British through this lab had access to a vaccine that they would not share. The theory was detailed right down to the scientists involved, but was almost too fantastical to be believed.

Now low and behold to my surprise on Wednesday the Canadian government after being called out on it publicly in the African papers makes the announcement that yes the Winnipeg lab was working on this Ebola virus testing vaccines for it, and that Canada would be making 1000 monkey doses (as of yet no human testing) available for the World Health Agency, catching even them by surprise.

Basically one of the most fantastical suspicion theories I have read in a long time almost being fully verified only days later in all but the intent inferred.

Meanwhile the big news out of the Winnipeg bio-lab this week isn’t their clandestine work on the Ebola virus and vaccines they are working on, but rather their lax controls on deadly viruses that are escaping their lab carried off site in suit cases with no security controls in place.

I think its down right scary and unacceptable the way some of these scientist can play god with some of the deadliest germs and viruses known to man… and yet have no accountability for their actions.

Can someone tell us the latest status of the hotel project beside the library…

Not sure if these links have been posted before….

IB 683 of Iskut is making the news lately. have a look at page 20, section 15.

Regarding the garbage bins comment above!

Some people in PG are pigs and think the garbage bin is the ground. A perfect example is the left overs from PGX. The streets around the fairgrounds are disgusting. So now all this crap get blown around the city. Way to go PG!

The trails around PG aren’t your personal dogs or horses bathroom! Pick up after your loved one craps!

The Vice President of transmission and distribution, for BC Hydro made the following statement in Prince George this week. (PG Citizen Thursday August 14th)

**Over the next 20 years we expect provincial electricity demand to grow by about 40 per cent, and we are proposing the Site C Dam in northern B.C. to play a major role in meeting that demand so we can maintain that edge we have in excellent electricity service**

If one considers what impact on Cities and Industry that a 40% increase in demand would generate we would have to assume that we are heading into 20 years of positive growth, that would be reminiscent of the 60’s and 70’s. Somehow I don’t see that happening.

So the question is, is this just hype to get people on board for Site C. It would be nice if the VP would give us some examples of where this power would used, ie; LNG Plants, New Industry, Huge population increases, etc; etc;. To just make the statement and leave it hanging in the air, is just not good enough.

The trails around PG aren’t your personal dogs or horses bathroom! Pick up after your loved one craps!

——-

Agreed! Horse people are the worst! They seem to think it’s perfectly acceptable to leave that crap on the trails and at the side of the road.

It’s really great to see intelligent conversation on here. People are not attacking other peoples’ opinions.

Very sad about Robin Williams;'(

Garbage…still waiting to see the city clean up the trash at the top of Pickering Rd. [just uphill from the jail]…..sure makes a major approach to PG look attractive

a big thumbs down to the jagoffs that decided to graffiti the salvation army church. talk about low lifes…

in response to moose, i know a number of teachers and this hasn’t been my experience. they’re hoping for a fair settlement as soon as possible and want to be back at work on sept. 2. they’re encouraged by vince ready’s willingness to come on board and so am I. I’m not sure how Mr. Ready is able to solve these situations a lot of the time, but he is definitely trusted by both sides.

and p val, i totally agree, what an amazing summer for camping. i’ve been out for about 20 days total since may, all over the province. i’m hoping to make it to paarens beach in fort st. james next weekend. on one hand, i hope the weather holds out, on the other, some rain would definitely help the forest fire situation and farmers. take it as it comes, i guess!

Beautiful hanging flowers hanging on light standards around town, but lots of weeds growing thru the sidewalks—look outside Speedee Printers.

I wish more parents would educate their kids on cleaning up after themselves while out enjoying mother nature!
Countless times I find myself hauling discarded tents, sleeping bags, inflatable items, broken coolers, broken bottles, garbage back with me that was left behind by other lazy people!
Parents should take the time to ask their kids, did you bring everything back?
I am sure others have also noticed the increased dumping of unwanted items along our back country roads. Correct me if I am wrong, but this practice has been on the rise since people are being charged to dump garbage at the local garbage dumps. I ask myself, at what cost is this helping matters!

—————

Charging people a small fee for the dump should not be a reason to engage in bad behavior. People need to start accepting responsibility for themselves.

Eagleone–I also thought the same as you about the appearance of the city when you enter it. One of the problems is there is no line painting and the curbs and sidewalks are all busted up from snow removal with large equipment. They just need to do a better job if they want people to move here.

Alright, have any suggestions on how to educate people in the act of responsibility axman? Or maybe you can wave your axe and grant them common sense.

Gotta agree about the weather this summer, this must be like the folks in the Okanagan get every year. I have a place at Cluculz Lake and can’t remember this kind of summer.
Some people knock PG, but people from the praires would kill for lakes like we have in this area and the affordability relative to most places.

While charging a small fee for the dump should not be a reason to engage in bad behavior like dumping in the bush etc. it was the predicted outcome. I rooted through some garbage dumped on my road and found a name on some paperwork so I phoned them and they came and cleaned it up. I would have taken it to the dump myself except I didn’t feel like paying for someone else’s garbage.

Totally agree with you dow7500, if one needs a change of scenery a new Eco system is only 3 hrs in either direction. Central B.C is amazing!

The hotel project beside the library is on hold (actually full stop). There is an issue with the construction of the building and most of the investors have pulled out. So just another vacant lot in the city, (will not be ready by any means for the games or any time in the future, no bucks, no build).

Sorry Axeman, idiots dumping garbage was a very predictable outcome of closing transfer stations and hiking fees. We should not make it difficult to dispose of waste. As for the “small fee”, by the time you pay for fuel to run up foothills and are subject to subjective charges,it can be far from a small fee. Society needs to make it easier to do the right thing with waste. Unfortunatly, illegal dumping is the outcome.

Alright, have any suggestions on how to educate people in the act of responsibility axman?

May I suggest fining the pants off the bush pigs that leave all their litter and trash behind? Once the adults learn that they could face huge fines for each offence they are likely to teach their little ones to not litter.

I’ll be taking pictures of camps this year while out hunting…and I’ll turn in everyone of them that leaves a mess behind.

Hartly 2 found proof amongst the garbage. That is not always the case. Most people are very convincing when it come to denial.

Yes Eagle 1 ,I notice the meridians [ loop going from ferry to Hyw 97 south to mention one location ] and wonder how nice the city would look if we could knock down the weeds and perhaps do a little painting . I like the mural on the wall with nice rock work and benchs , lighting etc heading towards the Vic medical center .Lets build on that .
Also I noticed new traffic signal lights up by Home Depo for a empty street . What Up ! How about some traffic lights on Ferry and Ospika where they are needed .

Have a great weekend all .

I have some photos taken in Seoul Korea where an employee scrapes the gum off the sidewalk and a person is out in front of a hotel with one of these huge rotary floor scrubber, scrubbing the area in front of their hotel.
If I send them to Ben maybe he would publish them.
Cheers

Seriously, now many extra trips throughout the course of the year do people make to the dump? If he pay to go to the dump once a week you are doing something wrong.

An IQ test for parenthood. :)

We could start by levying huge fines on anyone caught dumping. We could implement a reward system for people you turn in illegal dumpers.

We could stop raising our kids under the belief that everybody is equal and that society is responsible for your every whim.

Rumor Professional!

There was an announcement recently about a new opportunity that came up regarding property in the area. They aren’t expecting to have the hotel finished in time for the Winter games. So the next question is what property are they talking about? Any guesses? Flatten the old RCMP building and add to the hotel maybe? Just a rumor though.

We could implement a reward system for people you turn in illegal dumpers.

Yeah I could see that working as well as the swap sheds did Axman!
Every crack head would be looking for a reward after turning over your garbage can.
Your right about huge fines though, fines should include back roads as well as our highways,”which should be enforced” but clearly isn’t most likely because there isn’t enough money in pursuing litterers to make it worth the while.
My thoughts are “common sense isn’t very common”.
Maybe the car manufactures should start adding garbage cans to there vehicles and reintroduce the ash trays so idiots aren’t throwing butts out of there windows and creating forest fires.
Really were do you start!

If you are smoking in your vehicle, please use your ashtray and quit flicking your still lit butts on to the road. Thank you.

Last few vehicles I bought haven’t came with ashtrays, could this be part of the problem?

I personally liked the ashtrays, worked well at holding spare change. My thoughts!

“Really were do you start! “

I don’t know, but here is my favourite littering video:

https://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=10150303159335532

That was awesome axman, thanks for sharing had a good laugh!

and just how do you people think a horse rider is supposed to pick up their horse’s manure while out on a ride? Besides, horse manure is just grass or hay, breaks down with the first rain and it’s gong. Dog crap is meat based and completely different. It can pose a health hazzard, just like human crap.

They can figure something out. Regardless of the composition it’s really unpleasant to have to dodge the piles.

Kiplett…. crap is crap… its got other ingredients then just grass and hay.. its got all the other undesirables to the horse in it.. SO can a vegan just drop a load where ever.. its not meat ? Can they use your lawn for this.. please post your addy so its Vegan friendly dump site.

A horse is a pet/animal under human control.. be responsible.. if your are going to ride it come prepared.. just like responsible dog owners do.

Great video axman! Let’s see: Littering fine 300 bucks, at least two people not wearing seatbelts while driving off, that’s another 350 bucks….plus the nerve to deny having anything to do with dumping the litter!

Yes, great video!

“…haven’t came…” ? Is that the same as did not come?

Just wondering.

It’s still shit kiplett! Figure it out or keep off of the trails. I can show you a few piles that haven’t broken down on the first rain. If it is so good then next time you step in it don’t wipe it off your shoes then walk around on your carpet. It is only grass!

Not too many riders (zero?} would be thrilled riding a horse which is wearing diapers!

For those smokers who flick burning butts out of car windows (see them every day!}and like to blame some manufacturers for not proving ashtrays: Stores sell ashtrays which fit a cup holder!

Another solution is to refrain from smoking while driving. Stop and take a break, take a walk when you just MUST light one up!

Idea! quit selling tobacco products. Oh wait that wouldn’t work, tobacco sales generate taxes.

I walk 10 blocks to work for half of the year and I have tried to pick up garbage on my way to just do a little part in keeping our city a little cleaner. However, I have to walk about 9 blocks before I can find an unlocked garbage can to drop the litter in. So, we are our own worst enemy’s when it comes to litter.

Fast food outlets just compound the potential for more garbage strewn around our streets. Sorry, but it’s true.

Anyone have a frustrating experience at the Transfer station. Wrong coinage? Unsecured load? Mixed refuse? Attitude from the Dump Operator? (Foothills)

To summarize the Friday Free For All so far… we have garbage, garbage, garbage, garbage, crap, crap, manure, crap, garbage and manure.

Fascinating stuff! :-)

Hartly 2: Way to go! I guess they would rather come and get it than perhaps have a visit from the police. I just hope they take this lesson to heart.
Now, if more people would get involved like this and the courts would enforce the $2000.00 maximum penalty for littering for awhile, I’m sure people would probably rethink their actions.

You are lucky they came back and cleaned up the garbage. There is nothing compelling them to do so. Both the city and RCMP acknowledge that once it is on your property it is your problem. If you catch the people responsible with video you can take them to small claims court to maybe recover your 6 bucks but otherwise there is no proof that it was their garbage once it is on the ground – even if you see them dumping it. Letters in the garbage also not proof as they could have visited a friend and left that in the proper garbage receptacle which when emptied is now on your ground. Some people will oblige when they see they made a mistake but not all, still have a note to a few people on their facebook pages asking them why they chose to illegally dump their garbage with no replies

Give more, hate to rain on your parade but that is definitely not how it works. There was even a few articles on this the last few months.

IF there were penalties with some teeth people may think twice but as it stands the only real deterrent is to take it back to their house and see what they do.

Steward; I think these are great comments. Sadly though what ever happened to the people / groups that pay the city a one time fee to have their sign put up to ‘adopt a block’? Considering how many adopt a block sections we have in this community, you’d think this city would be spotless.

And regarding fast food outlets: I thought at one time they were ‘required’ to send staff out within a one block radius from their business to pick up all their cups, wrappers, cartons, napkins, etc. etc.

The city needs to install garbage cans in way more locations, the adopt a block members need to do more on their parts, and the fast food outlets need to take a lot more responsibility and pride in their little corners of this city.

“… we have garbage, garbage, garbage, garbage, crap, crap, manure, crap, garbage and manure.”

In other words a perfect summation of BH’s posts under current and previous usernames:D

Just want to say a big thanks to all the firefighters for beating back the flames, in the air and on the ground, all the support staff. Thanks.

Hey site moderator, I thought “this is not a chat line it is a forum for discussion on issues and concerns. Please, stick to commenting on the subject matter…”

Might want to read peoples#1 aka ewitt, aka HumanBeing, aka weaksauce’s comment. Might want to revoke this new peoples#1 account privileges as we all know why it was created.

Can’t win a debate with me head on, so impotence related frustration is setting in on the poor fellow :-( We understand, but at the same time harassment and stalking should not be allowed on this site.

Getting tired of the motorcycle racket.

Hey site moderator, I thought “this is not a chat line it is a forum for discussion on issues and concerns. Please, stick to commenting on the subject matter…”

So what is the subject matter on a free for all thread?

I thought todays subjects were horse dung, dog-doo and garbage.

Speaking of garbage, the McDonalds at Massey and Westwood is crow haven. Really should have someone out there in the morning cleaning up.

OK, new subject; Should a person be allowed to create multiple accounts and monikers with the aim of stalking and harassing others who comment on this site?

Isis a threat to the world funded by Qatar and other states and all that brainiac trudeau can come up with are the dope laws. I think he smoked a lot more than he lets on.
