Wanted: Blood Donors
Prince George, B.C.- It’s that time of the year, when blood donors are on holidays, but the need for blood is high.
In Prince George, more than 620 blood donating appointments have not been filled. That’s cause for concern says Amy Erickson, Territory Manager for the Canadian Blood Services Prince George Clinic. She says in consultation with hospital partners in B.C. and the rest of Canada, it has been determined there should be 7,000 donations this year.
“Usually, going into the summer we have a stronger inventory than we did this year” says Erickson “Nationally, we have just seen our lowest inventory dip in 5 years. So due to really slow donations in April, May and June, it just meant we didn’t have as much blood on the shelves before we went into the summer, so we weren’t as prepared as we would have liked , or as we usually are.”
Right now there are about 3,000 registered donors in Prince George, “That’s pretty typical for the Canadian population” says Erickson “3% of the population tends to donate, it’s a little bit lower in B.C.”. She says they believe they need to boost their donor base in Prince George by anywhere from 700 to 1,000 people. “That way we can have more donors coming in less often and during these summer dips we will still have extra people to come in and fill the gaps.”
There is a lot of fear that goes with blood donation says Erickson, “But I always say to people when we are out in the community that it’s important to think of those patients that are getting surgery, undergoing cancer treatment, they’ve been in an accident, they’ve had trauma, they’re probably pretty scared too, and we don’t want them to worry about if there’s going to be blood when they need it.”
So, there is an easy way to help fill those empty appointment sessions, call 1-888-2-DONATE, you can also sign up on line at www.blood.ca or use the new Canadian Blood Services “ap” called Give Blood that allows you to book appointments, create a profile and keep track of your donations.

you want people to give blood, maybe you should have drop in donations as well…. there are days I get an hour or so to be able to donate but when you have to phone and make an appointment it doesn’t always work.
so I think when you drop the appointment for donations and maybe even make it a tuesday or thursday that is dedicated to drop ins you might get more people in.
Part of the issue too is that they aren’t open on Mondays or Tuesdays, and only open every other weekend. I only get Mondays and Tuesdays off, I’m O-neg (universal donor), and would love to donate but I just can’t physically make it there.
i guess they need to make noise to justify their jobs?
The weekend is the only time I can go. It took me a month to get an appointment and then I woke up with cold symptoms so that makes me ineligible. Rescheduling put me well into September. And I might not be able to make that one because my daughter has a medical appointment that will be happening around the same time. I find it hard to schedule so far in advance! I’m thinking if they were open every weekend, I’d not be waiting as long.
They take drop ins all the time. The only reason for appointments is to spread out the crowd so that the wait time is less. Save several lives, get in there and donate.
I live in the Robson Valley and cannot make an appointment. My wife and I “drop-in” and have never been turned away.
We started donating blood a few years ago, and I have given 28 times so far. If I lived closer it could easily be 2 or 3 times that number.
Like they say: “BLOOD… It’s in you to give.”
Stop making excuses. Just do it.
Drop ins are never turned away.
Its open every Wednesday and Thursday from 10am – 9pm.
There are really no excuses to not being able to make it in there.
The only reason I make an appointment is so I remember what day it is I’m going in.
Every 56 days.
Pretty damn easy.
I’ve been doing it since I was 17, except for times when I was exempt from travel or tattoos….
What’s your excuse?
