Prince George, B.C. – The provincial government has announced its suspending the environmental assessment of the proposed Morrison copper-gold mine pending the outcome of an investigation in relation to the tailings pond breach at the Mt. Polley mine in Likely.
The investigation and review panel was announced this morning by Energy and Mines Minister Bill Bennett.
The suspension was made under the power of the Environmental Assessment Act.
The proposed mine is located 65 km northeast of Smithers and has an estimated mine life of 21 years.

when you build an earthen dam you cannot just go up and up without widening the base. USING only pure dirt ,fines, willnot and cannot work. GOOD rock is needed to strengthen the foundation to hold back the enormous pressure being exerted upon it. FOR GODS sake even a beaver knows this!
concrete is even better
This suspension is probably the start of more to come and as a result a downturn in the mining business in this province. To pick up the loss in revenue the government will be obliged to cut services or increase taxes.
Typical knee jerk reaction from our ineffective politicians. If the approval process is done properly there should be no reason to suspend the development of a viable mine. Where were our high priced inspectors? Lunching on the public dime in Victoria. Another independent inquiry? Obviously we can’t trust our politicians to look after the public good. Very sad situation in my opinion.
