New Position at UNBC will Focus on Regional Programs
Prince George, BC – There’s a new position at the University of Northern B.C., and a familiar name will fill the role.
Mark Dale, who had been Vice-President Academic and Provost, will be moving into the newly created position of “Dean of Regional Programs”. Dale had served as Interim President of UNBC during the period following the departure of George Iwama and the arrival of new President Dr. Daniel Weeks.
The new position will focus on programs and courses delivered in communities outside of Prince George. UNBC has regional campuses in Quesnel, Fort St. John, and Terrace. It also has an affiliation agreement with Wilp Wilxo’oskwhl Nisga’a in the Nass Valley, research forests east of Prince George and near Fort St. James, and a research station on the Quesnel River near Likely.
Dale says he is eager to work to “realize opportunities for enhancing our presence throughout the region.”
Dale will take on his new position January 1st, 2015.

It is a good development. For filling up the empty provost position, I hope UNBC will consider internal candidates who have a good record of increasing enrollments by pushing for attractive programs.
But creating attractive programs is not sufficient for increasing the enrollments, because these new programs may cannibalize the enrollments in other programs in UNBC and the net effect for UNBC be zero.
I borrow the term “cannibalize” from Business where the car companies (e.g jeep) introduce a new brand which cannibalizes the customers from the other brands of the same car company (jeep) and the company’s sale remain the same.
UNBC needs a candidate that increases the student market share of UNBC by opening new markets for UNBC educational “products”.
