Province Launches Website for Parents re School
(home page of new website, bcparentinfo.ca)
The Province has launched a website to keep parents up to date on the contract dispute between the government and the BCTF.
The site, bcparentinfo.ca offers the latest news on the contract bargaining, and the $40 dollar per day parent support that is being offered to families for each child under the age of 13 should the teachers strike drag on into the school year.
The hitch on the daily payment is that, according to the website, "Most payments will be processed within 30 days after the month in which the labour disruption ends. Payments for students attending kindergarten, and for students who are new to B.C. public schools, will also be made after the labour disruption ends once enrollment for the current school year can be confirmed."
The new website also offers some educational resources. While saying the resources are not meant to take the place of classroom instruction, the site adds, "they provide some opportunities for students to learn at home."
This morning on Global BC, Education Minister Peter Fassbender said the two sides in the dispute were not meeting this week and suggested the two sides are waiting to resume talks after a BCTF meeting in Kamloops that is set for this weekend.

When the bsrgaining affects so many people and involves big decisions about everyone’s tax dollars, the notion of a closed door negotiation doesn’t wash.
Why should the taxpayer be kept in the dark? They’re the ones that are ultimately going to be funding the settlement, whatever that looks like.
I agree with the Parent Advisory Council to have a “ceasefire” in the media war and give peace and mediation another chance, otherwise the talk of strike will become a self fulfilling prophecy soon.
Interesting article about the BC Conservative’s plan to end the current Teachers’s strike. Funny the NDP couldn’t get their act together to put out simple plan like this.
Some of it do-able, some of it not. At least somebody is brainstorming instead of head bashing.

Our tax dollars at work.
I don’t think it’s a good idea to negotiate through the media. Sure, it’s a public contract and we should get to know the details–once it’s done, but that is different than negotiating through the media.
Negotiating through the media makes it difficult for either side to talk. It likely only serves to inflame the situation and prevents cooler heads from prevailing. That would seem counterproductive if we want to get things sorted out.
If the goal is to try to oust the government or take a swing at the unions, that’s a different matter. If that’s what we want, then let’s get the media involved in every nitty gritty detail.
prof: “Interesting article about the BC Conservative’s plan to end the current Teachers’s strike.”
And how many seats do they currently have in the BC Legislature? It just seems like a lot of grandstanding to try and win some votes in the next election.
JB note that Pylot Project posted that “Interesting article about …”. A good starting point.
Well, our Liberal government is obviously a prime
example that lack of education funding does breed
“ignorance” – so sad :(
jb: “And how many seats do they currently have in the BC Legislature?”
So? What’s your point? No party is permitted to offer viable solutions that might help end this impasse, unless they have a BC Legislature seat? How draconian of you.
“It just seems like a lot of grandstanding to try and win some votes in the next election.”
The Libs and NDP pull that stunt on a daily basis. It’s called Politics. Again, what’s your point?
What is wrong with considering a proposal that is intended to end the current strike?
Who care’s who put it forward. Would we prefer to ignore a potential common sense solution, only because of where it came from?
You seem very sensitive to my comments, Pylot. I thought my point was very clear, but I’ll spell it out.
The BC Conservatives, having no seats and about zero support in the Province are offering a ‘solution’ just for publicity, and not because they have any real insight into this issue. Hopefully that clears things up for you.
Good thing it’s still about the children.
The teacher are just as greedy as our government. I pay school taxes for what. My child not getting much of an education this last school year and maybe next school year.
But instead my taxes are paying for other people’s day care and the family that don’t need day care what do our children get.
This has never been about the children. It’s about greed
I like this one–each eligible child may recieve $40 per day. I think will recieve would be a better choice.
Question will that $40 a day be consider income from the government if so you will have to pay taxes on it.
How would that work
It was crystal clear the first time JB. I was having trouble believing what I was actually reading.
Who’s to say they don’t have insight into the issue(s)? You don’t know that, anymore than I do.
It still begs the question why you think nobody outside of the inner Gov’t circle should be considered for credible intelligent solutions to the problem. They could very well have a ‘solution’ that might have fantastic ideas to solve this impasse with the BCTF. But you think they don’t have “insight”, and thus the ideas should be discarded and referred to as grandstanding for political gain, even if they’re possibly the best way to advance?
Nice.
The $40/day will only b e paid out at the end of the strike. You have to come up with the child-care costs up front first.
Read the conservative proposal, they say the liberals have a 75 million dollar LIF to 150 million and the BCTF will sign on the bottom line for 7.5% over 5 years.
So he is thinking offering half a percentage and 75 million more dollars would do it
The BCTF wants 8%, 225 million in back pay, 5000 per teacher signing bonus, 225 million per year x 5 for working conditions, and contract concessions including fertility treatments and the like but they will settle for 75 million more
Sounds about right, slinky. Now the BC Conservatives can go back in the shadows.
The teacher say this is about the children. Sounds like it’s about greedy teacher to me
