Say Bye-Bye to the Beer Fridge
Prince George, B.C. – If you want to save energy and reduce your hydro bill, you might want to think about making some renos to the Man Cave by saying goodbye to the beer fridge.
According to B.C. Hydro, nearly 40% of all homes in B.C. have a secondary fridge. BC Hydro estimates these secondary chillers cost homeowners more than $34 million a year in electricity costs.
Why so much? Fridges are running 24/7, and one fridge can cost $90 a year in electrical costs. “These secondary fridges are usually ten to eleven years old, so they are not the most energy efficient” says Rob Lee, Program Manager for BC Hydro’s Refridgerator Buy- Back program.
The program has been around since 2003, and has BC Hydro picking up and recycling that old fridge plus giving you $30 dollars off your electricity bill.
According to BC Hydro, if all the secondary fridges in B.C. homes were recycled, there would be enough energy saved to power all the homes in a city the size of Chilliwack for an entire year.
To register for pickup, customers need to complete the Fridge Buy-Back application online.

Never!
90 bucks a year? To keep my beer cold??
Man, that’s money well spent!!
Gotta make the regular Joe blow pay for the corporate welfare.
Big business is not able to function in this province without government hand outs.
You must be a major hoot at parties, Loki.
How about charge rio tinto full price for the electricity and drop all our rates instead..
Or stop the million dollar bonuses to upper management
Oh wait it’s the consumers fault for having a beer fridge..lol. Silly me
Borrowing from Mr Heston. “”I’ll give you my beer fridge when you take it from my cold, dead hands”
Wow thanks for pointing out how cheap it is to run. I thought it would be more. Only $8 a month? I will keep it now :)
Holy low self esteem, you might want to have that looked at.
I am very popular, especially when I put on my psychology hat and play the guess the personality disorder game due to my amazing accuracy.
Opinions are just that, opinions. Ideally those opinions have some supporting argument.
A debate is a bi-direction exchange of opinions. If any party to the debate or discussion refuses to accept another’s opinion, then the debate/discussion is moot.
Have a nice day.

Learn from your mistakes rather than seeing yourself as a failure.
Think of your successes, positive qualities and talents.
Spend time engaging in activities you enjoy.
Do not focus on the achievement of others.
Do not become overly dependent on validation from others.

Love some of the funny responses!
heyyy Loki…. you forgot, for some keep the beer fridge so temporarily lifts your self esteem as one gulps their beer
My apologies for missing the liquid courage.
when the sun rises in the west then ill give up my beer fridge
“I am very popular, especially when I put on my psychology hat and play the guess the personality disorder game due to my amazing accuracy.”
Holy delusions of grandeur.
Clearly, I must have touched a nerve. Sorry Loki, I didn’t realize you were the sensitive type.
P Val, Rio tinto generates their own electricity. It’s the overpriced power the government forces Hydro to buy from fiberal friends driving up prices.
Johnny, I was trying to figure out what kind of personality disorder changes a persons views when commenting on a story about beer fridges turning in to low self esteem and coping strategies, but I decided to get another beer out of my beef friggdde an reflet on them tissues and xamine them conflety afor think’in bout it smore.
Love the good-natured ribbing and humour, but have to agree with Loki on the whole personality disorder thing: often wondered if JB was a narcissist but was reluctant to comment on the matter for fear it would go to his head if he actually narcissistic. Classic case of damned if you, damned if you don’t . . . or words to that effect. Jeez, thanks be to all that wholly that my beer is cold, at least . . .
Seamut.. Yes they do..but the government paid lots to have kemano built. And rio tinto makes more money selling the power back to hydro then it does making aluminum .. Any time rio tinto shuts down a line any extra power should be given up for free.
Why? So the province lost money on kemano, is that what you are implying.
I guess we will have to locate a City the size of Chilliwack and try to sell them this surplus power.
Orrrrrr. We could just continue to use the power and pay Hydro. After all that’s the name of the game. They produce power and sell it to us. Lately is seems they don’t want us to use their power. Hmmmm. Must get a better price South of the border.
Grizzly: “Johnny, I was trying to figure out what kind of personality disorder changes a persons views when commenting on a story about beer fridges turning in to low self esteem and coping strategies”
Yeah, I was kind of thinking the same thing, but who knows. I won’t lose any sleep over it.
yeahhhh don’t mess with a guy’s beer fridge… It’s sacred
What comes with a beer fridge. Hmmmm Beer flatulence. Not so sacred.
solar power for a beer fridge may be cheaper then hydro
Seamut yep that’s what I am saying..rio tinto power contract was signed decades ago.. They are guaranteed that rate.. Us consumers don’t get the same deal. We pay going price ..
According to BC Hydro, if all the secondary fridges in B.C. homes were recycled, there would be enough energy saved to power all the homes in a city the size of Chilliwack for an entire year.
………………..
Then due to their loss of revenue hydro would raise our rates again to offset their loss.
Of equal importance:

It is an offer to pick up the old inefficient clunker fridge in the basement and give the customer 30 bucks on top of it! Nobody is forcing anyone to give up the thing! One has the option of choosing to keep it for the rest of one’s life!
Predictably enough this story is immediately morphed into accusations of personality disorders, corporate greed and not to forget the usual fiberal rant. Would it be more appreciated and would the merits of the effort be the focal point of attention if the other party would be in power?
Probably.

My only concern is this, does the small “beer fridge” even qualify for a rebate? Their web site says 10 – 24 cu. ft. and I’m pretty sure my beer fridge isn’t 10 cu. ft.
