PG Parents Have Options Should Strike Continue Next Week
Prince George, B.C. – Parents in Prince George will have some options on how to occupy their kids should the teachers strike continue into next week.
Executive Director Tim Bennett with Big Brothers Big Sisters says if the strike persists they’ll continue on with their summer programming.
“We’re planning on continuing with our summer adventure day camps. The only difference is we’re going to be moving to a day-by-day basis because we’re really hoping to get everyone back in school and be able to start our after school care programming.”
He admits parents do seem concerned,”We have been receiving calls from worried parents. We’re getting more phone calls as we get closer.”
Another option are Creativity Day Camps at Two Rivers Gallery.
Director of Public Programs Carolyn Holmes says they’ll have up to 20 spaces available with care from 8:45 until 4:30 and programmed activities from 9-4 starting Wednesday, September 3.
She says parents can register for one day at a time or multiple days and promises it will be a fun alternative to school.
“We’ll be going outside, so kids should be prepared for that. They bring their lunch and their snacks and we’ll have tons of art activites and games.”
And for parents on a tight budget the Prince George Public Library will be offering free activities.
“We recognize certainly that it’s a difficult time for children and families and although there is great care being made available in the community that’s not necessarily something all families can afford to do,” says Communications Coordinator Andrea Palmer.
“What we’re doing is very basic but open to all members of the public – and free – which is basically family fun game times at both branches of the Library.”
Palmer says that will include such activities as board games, interactive games like the Wii and movies.
