Prince George, B.C. – In terms of hectares of forest burnt, 2014 has been a scorcher in B.C.

According to the BC Wildfire Management Branch wildfires have gobbled up 330,258 hectares of forest this year, roughly 7,000 hectares short of the ten year high of 337,149 in 2010.

And as the following numbers show, fires crews have been busiest in the Prince George Fire Centre:

(Fire Centres) Hectares Burnt

Coastal 1340
Northwest 139429
Prince George 177716
Kamloops 3566

For some perspective on how busy this year has been, just 18,259 hectares of forest burnt all of last year.

The ten year average (2003-2014) is 141,092.

Fighting fires hasn’t come cheaply this year either, with $246,024,513 spent so far. (PG by far the costliest at $63,785,698 – roughly how much the provincial government budgeted on this year).
