Prince George, B.C. – It took motorists an extended period of time to reach their destination when travelling along Highway 16 west Saturday afternoon.

A two-vehicle collision resulted in a massive traffic tie-up for both east and westbound traffic between 3 and 4pm. The collision involved a car and a pickup on Highway 16 at Westgate Avenue. Traffic came to a complete halt for some time before police opened a single lane of the highway. They also utilized Bear Road running parallel to the highway in an attempt to move some of the backup along.

It is not known whether anyone was injured in the collision. Cause of the crash is being investigated.

This is probably the safest hwy 16 west has been for a long time. Nobody moves and nobody gets hurt.

No kidding dragonmaster. I shudder to think how many more accidents would occur in the area if there were more retail locations in that direction.

hey look, more Westgaters crashing! Quick, better go work radar on the Hart Highway! ;)

ps – I do hope they are ok

Is it just me or do all lanes of traffic look like they are going the same way?

bcracer – this is looking west. Highway traffic plus that frontage road traffic. Guessing people thought they might be able to sneak through by taking the frontage road.

west bond lane is right and east bond there is nothing on hwy. 16 then you see west bond traffic on frontage road

First impressions did look a bit deceiving.

It appears that lots of people thought the access road from the mall up to Westgate may have been accessible.

That’s actually a very good point bcracer and BYOB. I went through this right after it happened (I was at the mall when emergency crews went by). That frontage road was full before the highway was. In other words, all that traffic on the frontage road was coming out of Walmart etc, not coming off the highway trying to avoid the accident because you couldn’t even tell there was a problem on the highway yet. Anyone who wants that frontage road upgraded is correct. That frontage road gets a ton of traffic trying to head west.

That frontage road is the only way to gets from the mall to hwy 16 heading west. I feel sorry for the tourists especially those with RVs and boats that get into Walmart and Can Tire and then have to take this trail back out to the hwy.
