New Signals Will Slow Traffic in Valemount
Prince George, B.C. – Residents of Valemount will be pleased to know that the provincial government is investing nearly half a million dollars in their community with the installation of new traffic signals on Highway 5 at 5th Avenue.
The new signals will improve safety for drivers as well as for pedestrians who have to cross the busy highway. Work is being done by Lakes District Maintenance, the local maintenance contractor and Westcana, the ministry’s electrical contractor. Work is expected to be completed this fall.
The province is providing $400,000 for the traffic signal installation.
Over the summer, the government spent $13.8 million improving transportation and infrastructure in the Robson Valley. The projects include:
* installing an overhead changeable message board at Tête Jaune for
travellers on Highway 16 westbound and Highway 5 southbound;
* resurfacing on Highway 16 between Red Pass and the Alberta Border;
* rehabilitation work to the West Twin Bridge on Highway 16,west of McBride;
* constructing a new southbound passing lane on Highway 5, 55 kilometres
south of Valemount near Chappell Creek.

400 thou for traffic lights? That’s more than the cost of a house. Ridiculous!
That does seem a little excessive. Maybe it was a typo? Maybe a breakdown of the cost would make it seem reasonable?
That’s what they cost. Hence the push for round abouts wherever possible. Once you take the timers, sensors, machine work and labour into consideration, (plus the lights themselves) it adds up very quickly.
