PG Teachers Busy Casting Ballots
Prince George, B.C. – Roughly 1,000 Prince George teachers are casting their ballots today on a BCTF proposal to have binding arbitration settle the ongoing teachers dispute.
Prince George Secondary School teacher representative Phil Rice is expecting a strong turnout.
“I expect it will be pretty much 100% here. Everyone is going to make their way down here at some point.”
He also expects the BCTF will receive a strong mandate from its members.
“I expect it will be a high yes vote. What our executive recommends we’re quite happy to follow.”
The vote will continue at picket lines and the Prince George & District Teachers Association office until 5 this afternoon.
The results are expected to be made available late this evening.
All of this despite the fact the provincial government has indicated no interest in using binding arbitration as a way to settle the impasse.

Does the tough talking local union rep hang around the ballot box making sure all the sheep (teachers) tow the union line?
It will be interesting to see how many teachers bother to vote on this proposal that has already been rejected by the government. Seems like a waste of time.
This is nothing more than a politicking maneuver . They know before the voting starts what the result will be.
Binding arbitration works for the teachers but not the Government. So, round and round we go.
Nice publicity stunt.
Wow just proves they a deaf and stupid, what part of “NO” are they not hearing? Or could this just be a learning issue?
An interesting bit from Global news.
Here’s a chance for you to get some insight into the BCTF/gov’t dispute
and into Justice Susan Griffin’s ruling. If you listen to it you might see why many people side with the teachers.

Was the voting done in private so nobody could see how you voted?
BC government is losing the public battle now that BCTF has proposed arbitration.
“The Vancouver School Board has been calling on both parties — the BCTF and the BC government — to agree to binding arbitration. We issued that request back in July because we could see this was headed for a long dispute,” the chair of the Vancouver School Board Patti Bacchus says.
So much ignorance here.
Tough talking union rep? Come on these are teachers not a bunch of longshoremen in a 1950s movie. Get serious.
There is lots of room at the picket line to find some privacy to vote.
This vote was done because Fassbender wanted proof that they were serious.
Probably no one believes the gov’t will agree to binding arbitration but the offer has to be made official.
Binding arbitration is the fairest way to solve the strike as a mediator takes in all the issues before making a decision. What could be more fair?
The gov’t is afraid of a fair decision.
If you think the teachers position totally unreasonable, check out another perspective from the head of the BC Conservative party.

“BC government is losing the public battle now that BCTF has proposed arbitration”…Good one! I almost choked on my sip of coffee. The BCTF’s public support is spiraling down the bowl as we speak.
What a complete waste of time, Jim does not understand that no means NO. I’ve heard a rumour that they are going to have another vote Friday to see if the teachers would be in favour of accepting a 23% increase if they gave up 1/2 a Pro D day and $500.00 of their massage money. (JOKE) Jim— no means no.
“The BCTF’s public support is spiraling down the bowl as we speak”
Oh is it Jimmy?

VANCOUVER – Nine unions have banded together in British Columbia to offer $8 million in interest-free loans to the province’s striking teachers while the nurses’ union is donating half a million dollars.
BCTF is getting weaker. Lol. By all 3 posters on this site.
So a couple of union bosses got together and loaned the BCTF 8 million dollars. Impressive.
Jimmy Hughes,
why don’t you watch and listen to the Golbal TV interview with Sandy Garossino?
Jimmy Hughes.. Nice world you live in.. The hate and contempt for this horrendous government is building by the second.
Please list what this government has done that is good for us
This may be off topic, but can anybody tell me how a union runs itself in to the ground so bad that it can’t pay strike pay and has to get donations to secure a loan?
This vote is so out there, I’m not surprised Iker thinks it’s a good idea, with his ego and his grandstanding, this fits his personality to a T. Professional, you’re right, it’s an incredible learning curve.
Fassbender wants proof they’re serious? Or as out to lunch as they have been during this whole mess.
LRB director where are you? Get these misguided unfortunates back to work!
Please!
YeeHaa 8 million bucks! Iker will be busy packing for another “strategy session” in Harrison Hot Springs, Whistler or Kelowna. First “session” involves 18 different elements.
P Val,
How about the BC Liberals giving us some of the lowest overall taxes of any Province? You guys in BC are spoiled. I come from Ontario where they have HST, property taxes are higher, there is even a $600 – $900 health care premium paid on top of your annual income tax return.
Grizzly2, isis, JohnnyBelt, Hart Guy,
If in your wildest imagination you think that your posts are more insightful than Justice Susan Griffin’s or Sandy Garossino’s, you are delusional.
After listening to Garossino’s interview, it makes many of the anti-teachers posters on this site look really ill informed.
Grizzly2, did it ever occur to you that the court case and appeals have cost a lot of money. I wonder what th Liberals have spent on the court action.
Karrman, no one needs your insults that we are delusional. These are our opinions, so please keep your demeaning comments to yourself.
Could be we are the only ones who have a lot of common sense and good judgement, LOL.
Karrman. And guess what..we the tax payers are paying for the lawyers the government is paying to fight the teachers. So slimy it stinks
restjet, that is definatly a rumour.
Grizzly2,
You opened the door on demeaning comments
“I’m not surprised Iker thinks it’s a good idea, with his ego and his grandstanding, this fits his personality to a T. Professional, you’re right, it’s an incredible learning curve.” . After reading the anti teacher posts on this site, I figured my comments were not only a fair response, but also a necessary response to posters who thinks it’s just fine to post insulting comments.
You’ll also note that my comments were conditional. I began with an “if”, so if you think that applies to you, please note that my comments were directed to those extremely “negative towards teacher” posters who claim to be well informed, yet not only continue to bash teachers without any acknowlegement of the gov’ts role in this situation, but also don’t take the time to hear an or give any thought to Justice Griffin’s or Sandy Garossino’s. Both ladies I would venture are a lot more educated on legal matters nd better informed than the average poster on tis site.
Anyone hear the news about the latest poll which shows Christy Clark’s approval ratings dropping? The last time her ratings were this low, she won an election.
Speaking of the news, I heard the union goons showed up to boo and whistle while she was speaking in Maple Ridge today. Don’t let those union bullies push you around!
Grizzly: “Karrman, no one needs your insults that we are delusional. These are our opinions, so please keep your demeaning comments to yourself. ”
I’m not too worried about posters like Karmann. They just want anyone who disagrees with them to stop posting, and these are the tactics they like to use.
Another good name calling tactic by some on this site; if you think that teachers are compensated fairly, you are automatically branded ‘a teacher hater’ or ‘teacher basher’. You’re also not ‘well informed’.
JohnnyBelt,
Actually I’m fine with opposing views, but for those who post insulting comments they shouldn’t be surprise to be responded to in a similarly fashion.
I certainly wouldn’t want you to stop posting. In fact,I’m interested to read your response to Garossino’s Global TV interview.
“This may be off topic, but can anybody tell me how a union runs itself in to the ground so bad that it can’t pay strike pay and has to get donations to secure a loan?”
Court cases fighting law breakers grizz 2 is expensive!
Grizzly2, isis, JohnnyBelt, Hart Guy,
If you are not delusional, then what is wrong with you that you cannot see the support of all workers in this province and the unhappiness of all students? who is left? Even the school boards, on the side of government, are supporting the resolution by arbitration.
Are you being paid for your comments?
Has anyone done the math on the 8 million given by the other unions? With 40,000 teachers in this province that works out to $200.00 per teacher, not much to stave off financial hardship. I can agree to disagree with parts of both sides position. The posters on this site prove that the media works in making the general public think they need to pick sides, when both sides have some good points and some bad. Neither is really on the students side, although that is what both proclaim. IMHO
==>karrmann
If it is a matter of jurisprudence then I would defer to the opinion of the Justice who granted the appeal of Griffin’s ruling.By his position one would expect greater legal knowledge than a lower court judge or a former prosecutor. In an article i read he said in essence there were holes in Griffin’s reasoning that you could drive a truck through. I think I remember the site so will post a link if I can find the article.
==>Pval If you follow the money back to it’s source, we the taxpayers are paying for the tf’s lawyers. So slimy it stinks
==>prof
No. You?
Either our elected government runs the education system or the BCTF does. That’s what’s at stake here. I have zero faith in the BCTF looking out for my interests and if the government dosen’t, I vote against them. I have no recourse on the BCTF.

What about karmann, NoWay, P Val, prof, buzzinga and of course 8. Because they are peas in a pod they count as one?
Have you ever sat a day in your child’s classroom??
Teachers have given up their wages for their students (your child)! Have you, as parents, given up a days’ wage to see the education that your child receives??
…is that violin music I hear? Anyone with any kids in the school system knows some teachers work hard and some mail it in. We have all spent countless hours at the kitchen table helping our kids learn, at various stages of their lives. Teachers are a component in the learning process, hardly the sole provider.
I’m laughing so much I can’t post. Is Karman a teacher?
Violin!!! Yes!! Wouldn’t schools be wonderful again with a music program, a school nurse, and a counselor!!
Sure would be nice happy. But so would world peace, no hunger, universal unconditional love, rivers of choclate…..
I wonder if there are any PO’d Union members in BC this afternoon, other than the BCTF members??
Just imagine if you will that you are a poor BCGEU member! You are forced to pay Union dues in order to have your job. You pay your dues with the expectation that they will be used for programs to support you. You expect that any currently unused funds would be invested or otherwise placed into some sort of an account for the purpose of earning some sort of rate of return.
But now you hear that your Union is contributing funds to a program that will provide “interest free” loans to members of a different Union, who’s members by and large make more money and have better benefits than you do!!
If I were a Union member (yeah, I know, NOT very likely), I certainly wouldn’t consider that a good use of my Union dues and I’d be a little bit peeved if a vote by the membership wasn’t taken prior to the decision to extend “interest free” loans!!
I’d also be a bit concerned that if my Union had already reached new contract agreement with Government. School support workers, members of CUPE reached an agreement in the spring. Their agreement falls in line with the Government’s mandate! Let’s assume for sake of argument, that CUPE members get 1.5% this year under their new contract. CUPE members make less than teachers, so let’s use a $40,000.00 income. A 1.5% increase means that the CUPE member will receive a wage increase of $600.00 this year!
Now, let’s assume that teachers make $60,000.00 per year. If they settled for 1.5%, like CUPE did in my example above, the teachers would receive a $900.00 raise this year! That’s $300.00 more than the raise that CUPE members get!
BUT, and this is where it really gets interesting, the teachers aren’t asking for 1.5%! It gets better! They want MORE! So, let’s assume that they are asking for 2.0%. At this rate, the teacher would get a $1,200.00 raise this year, while the CUPE member would only get $600.00!
If I was a CUPE member and my Union wanted to loan my Union dues to the BCTF, a Union that wants more than I got, and my Union does so on an “interest free” basis, I think that I might be a tad upset!
I remember having a school nurse! And I remember getting the “strap”!!!!
Then Hartguy i would tell them to get another job if they dont like it.
@ karmann, I couldn’t care less if you want to insult me. If you feel the need, go for it! I have thick skin!
I would like you to remember that you on occasion, have have insulted and demeaned others on this site, and on occasion I have called you on it, remember?
Let’s play nice in the sandbox, the one in the neighbourhood park! After all, the one’s in the school yards are behind pickets!
Not saying that corporal punishment should be brought back in… but parents need to do their part…. as educators are expected to do too much!! Teach!!! Is their priority! Listening to Global this morning the number of children without food and child services waiting for the phone calls to come in from schools regarding neglected children!! Do you realize what a school does for your child’s welfare???
I guess you don’t understand what helping your “brother/sister” means Hart guy! It is just a loan like the one you give your good customers when they are a little short right hart guy? You know they are going pay you back.
JohnnyBelt “All the union goons” you mean teachers.. yeah.. nice stretch.. union goons omg you are hurting with that statement.. No it was shown on the news tonight.. by your comment of ” I heard” you have shown you are going by word of mouth for your information. Try doing some real research and you will be amazed to find the truth out.
But I watched the news.. it was disgusting how our leader snuck in and out the back door.. to much of a worm to not talk to the teachers. But during her speech she mentioned raising more taxes on gas etc to cover the education costs.. any excuse to raise taxes I guess.. didnt mention anything of the missing 900 million from ICBC of course or what that went to.
lets not forget bc hydro
P Val: They keep on about Glen Clark BUT never mention Glen Campbell selling us all down the river with subsidizing the wind mills in Chetwynd and Tumbler Ridge increasing our hydro bills by 40% to buy more expensive power from GE Capital the owners of the wind mill. OH Wait a minute but God help us all if there is not enough money to fund education!!! Not to mention the $700 million spent on power to a US company. This Liberial government is out of control.
NoWay, if you haven’t got the money to pay for my goods and services, you can always go to your own bank or finance company for a loan. I am not a bank or finance company!
Good customers can very quickly become bad customers and delinquent accounts, so I leave the banking to the Banks!
this anal govt. is desperate they should go back to the playground and learn how to play nice with others. but no its all no, no, no don’t like that and afraid of binding arbitration? they just don’t want to negotiate fairly, they are turning bc into the Alabama of the north! man up and settle this dispute try and come up with some fresh ideas but back to the sandbox we go me, me, me.
I stand to be corrected. Gordon Campbell was Christy Clarks mentor
reading your post isis its all poor you you you
P Val, seriously, do you really think that anything might have been accomplished by Christy Clark stopping to speak to teachers today, either before or after her speech?? Seriously??
Do you really think that the “mob” would have done anything other than yell and scream at her in a very rude and threatening manner?? Perhaps she was worried that some picketer might lose it and hit her with a picket sign!
Hart Guy,
you’re right, I have been unkind to some posters.
Part of my annoyance with the negative posters is that I went to school in the ’50’s and ’60’s when we had respect for teachers. I had a lot of good teachers when I was in school. Some of them were WW2 vets who were tough, but you knew that they were interested in your success. If you got in trouble at school, you heard about it when you got home.
It was a time when dad worked and mom was at home, and if she happened to be out when you got home, the door was unlocked. There were only five TV channels in black and white and profanity wasn’t part of the evening’s viewing. You gave up our seat on the bus for adults and you took your hat off inside any house or restaurant. But I digress……
The lack of respect for teachers, or virtually anything, from some posters galls me.
P Val, did you really expect Clark to attempt dialog with the chanting union drones? Really?
Who cares how much money the government( that’s right they were elected by the citizens of this province overwhelmingly) has spent in court fighting the bctf?
The government ( elected again to represent all British columbians) needs to fight the bctf( not representing every British Columbian nor elected by all British Colombians) to save British Colombians from having to overpay for the overblown services of miseducated teachers.
Nuff said.
Ps,
How many teachers out there have English, geography, or psychology degrees?
Nuff said.
I haven’t verified this, but I was told that for classes in the Greater Vancouver area, 50% of the students have English as a second language. This is why class size and composition has been a “go to the wall” issue for teachers. If this is the case, perhaps it should be recognized by the Federal gov’t through funding.
The bctf is an entity onto itself even though it is composed of indviduals who happen to be teachers. This entity has acted as the playground bully for 30 odd years and this time may have just met their match and have met someone willing to stand up to them. As with most bullies they are stumped by this and don’t know what to do next.
If the teachers in your school days saw the recently expired contract of today’s teachers, with the money converted to that time what do you think they would say? My guess the first words out of their mouth would be”and they are asking for more?”
Lildigger, all teachers have psychology, how do you think they try to teach kids with autism,FAS and sever emotional problems, the difference is they are not payed enough for there skill.
Now do you expect nurses buying piss pans for patiants? no you dont but teachers have to buy lots of stuff for the kids because the funding isnt there.
Funny buzzinga, did you know autism has jumped from 1,500 students in 2001 to 6,750? How is this possible, do you really think there has been over 400% jump in autistic kids in just over a decade? Could it be that there were always autistic kids in classes just not labeled as such?

P Val: “JohnnyBelt “All the union goons” you mean teachers.. yeah.. nice stretch.. union goons omg you are hurting with that statement.. No it was shown on the news tonight.. by your comment of ” I heard” you have shown you are going by word of mouth for your information. Maybe you could enlighten us as to what ‘the truth’ is? I saw a juvenile mob chanting, booing, and whistling and trying to disrupt the premier any way they could. Let’s hear your side of the story.
karmann, I went to school in the 60’s and 70’s and I also experienced the vast majority of what you speak of.
But part of my annoyance is the inability of many of the posters to acknowledge that generally speaking, while our teachers are doing a good job, a job that they are well compensated for, we have a Union that is clearly unable to have any respect for any Government, is unable to negotiate with any political party and most of all, has no respect for how hard some people have to work and sacrifice in order to pay the taxes that pay the wages of teachers and keep the schools open!
The lack of respect for my tax dollars and my ability to pay more tax dollars galls me!
Respect is a two way street and it cannot be expected! It is not given lightly and as such, it must be earned!
If the BCTF wants my respect, they must earn it and so far, they have failed miserably. You will note that I didn’t say teachers! I said the BCTF!!
The BCTF is still living in another era. It’s time to work towards a system where they hold poor performing members to task and cull them if and when necessary, instead of expending energy protecting the undeserving. We have all known lousy teachers, but they just keep on teaching and teaching and teaching!
karrman ESL kids are not idiots, doesn’t mean they don’t understand the language. You can be labelled ESL due to the fact that your spoken language at home is not english, pretty much any immigrant family. I was ESL, paste your label on me. Charles Jago’s paper shows ESL students above average in all numeracy and writing abilities within BC, amongst sub populations French Immersion does the best – go figure.
http://www.bcprogressboard.com/2006Report/EducationReport/Education_Final.pdf
Slinky did you know that there are alot of kids deathly allergic to peanuts how is that so?
@ isis “and they are asking for more?”
I couldn’t agree more!!
buzzinga
We have done a lot of looking into this with a few families and it would appear some studies found it is mostly due to immunizations in developed countries, due to the lower incidence of childhood diseases. the ‘hygene’ effect so to speak… why? A lot more Asthma cases due to air quality as well, does one beget another?
slinky,
you are way off base if you can somehow consider that my comment was to comment on the intelligence of ESL students.
Rather, the point, which you completely missed, is that many of these students require some extra help as they learn a new language.
karrman you are way off base. ESL students have that label throughout their schooling. The numbers in no way support what you are saying, an ESL student does not necessarily have english as a minor language or a barrier to learning, they just have a second one.
Then give us the real number slinky. You are talking off the cuff again.
I gave you the numbers earlier – they are all in the report, if you can’t copy and paste that is not my problem
http://www.bcprogressboard.com/2006Report/EducationReport/Education_Final.pdf
Oops, sorry 8, I shouldn’t have given you something that requires reading comprehension. Leave the discussion to the grown ups.
