CUPE Standing Strong With Striking Teachers

Saturday, September 13, 2014 @ 3:52 AM

Prince George, B.C. – It’s not just striking teachers who aren’t receiving paychecks these days due to the their job action.

CUPE members across the province, including approximately 900 in Prince George, McBride, Valemount and Mackenzie are also getting hit hard in their pocketbooks.

“Our wages are suspended just like any other union that would be affected by job action,” says CUPE 3742 president Karen Wong.

“We do have a small picket pay fund that helps some of our members get through some of the tougher times but we have not been receiving wages since mid-June.”

Wong says her members do custodial work, clerical work, work as custodial assistants, Strong Start, are youth-care workers and says times are tough.

“It’s always tough on members because as far as CUPE goes, our wages are low to begin with and a lot of our members work paycheck to paycheck as it is.”

But she adds members are fully behind teachers and committed to the cause.

“This is a union life and we’re all union members and we believe in the union and we just move forward with it.”

OMG Que Sera, Sera?

Hard to understand people helping people hey slinky?

Good for them!

So not only are they saving on teachers wages but support workers wages too! Oh where oh will our tax dollars get funnelled to this time?

Wow!Drink the kool-ade much? Put the money towards the debt, as it is about to grow significantly.

There are over 80 school bus drivers that are affected by this strike as well. Not all of the drivers can get Unemployment benefits.

Trickle down consequences unfortunately! This is the part where the Wealthy Barber says you need 3-6 months cash on hand for unforeseen emergencies. Although this could be seen coming since the last negotiations, so no one should have been caught unaware!

The debt we are going to owe for the 40.00 per day per kid under 13 cougs? But my taxes say school tax and that is where it should go else give it back as JB hopes.

Can’t be that bad, I have been watching kijiji and haven’t noticed any rises in garage sale this past month. Just a personal observation.

You missed the point, my comment was in the line I posted from the article but you assumed it was for the entire article of course. The way the quote reads is they expect this as a union, just normal union business. Another strike, ho hum, que sera, sera, whatever will be will be was the attitude from Karen Wong’s quote.

So 164,400 families have signed up for the $40 a day bribe. So if they only have one child it will only cost us tax payers $6,576,000 a day. So 46 million a week.. Government and teachers are 400 million apart. Meet in the middle at 200 mill, the government will spend that for the day care in 29 days.. What a huge waste

Sort of a catch 22 NoWay! Either way the non public employee taxpayer will be fubared.

Easily saving 20-25 million a day, so give it to the parents and put the rest toward the debt.

PVal that is Iker’s figure annually, they are ‘so close’ on wages that he doesn’t add the other 300 million they differ there (signing bonus and back pay)

Oh and public employees don’t pay taxes? Where do I sign up?

Got it Slinky! ;) I forgot about Doris Day.

No cougs the money should go to education just like the gas tax is supposed to go to roads.

Cougs. You do realize that public employees pay taxes as well don’t you? Looks like you don’t.. So they will see any increase on taxes fees etc the liberals blame on the teachers.

Don’t you find it interesting that no settlement has been reached and in a statement Clark already had calculated it will raise the price of gas by 5 cents a litre. Hmmmm. Guess no matter what the settlement is gas is going up and it’s the teachers fault.

P Val: “Cougs. You do realize that public employees pay taxes as well don’t you?”

You do realize that public employees are funded by tax dollars, don’t you? Do you also believe in perpetual motion machines?

According to people like P Val and NoWay, we could get ourselves out of debt by hiring more public employees! They pay taxes, right? Lol.

P Val: “Government and teachers are 400 million apart. ”

Where do you get this figure and I’m sure it doesn’t account for costs to meet teacher’s class size and composition demands with the increased staffing levels needed. At least tell the whole story, P Val.

Jees you guys must be negotiating for the BCTF. No where did I write that teachers don’t pay taxes. I simply said non public employee taxpayers will be fubared. Regurgitated tax money really isn’t new, but we will keep running this ponsee scheme until the real taxpayers decide they won’t pay anymore. That’s coming sooner than most people realize.

Remember this is a 5 year deal, PVal. So you even if you say 29 days x5 is 145 school days kids can miss before we come half way, but remember this is perpetual and doesn’t end at the end of the contract.

Great idea JB I will give you credit for that one.

Listen to yourself cougs “real tax payers” , so I guess public employees are not real tax payers. Good luck with your tax revolt.

Saw this on FB today:

Things that don’t require a tax increase:

1. Govt. spent 330 million on Convention Centre
2. BC Place 510 million ( Budget was 365 million)
3. Olympic games 6 billion
4. Corporations 1 billion per year tax gift
5. 750 million paid to settle law suit with an American company

Things that do require a tax increase:

1. Teachers

‪#‎stopthepropaganda‬

Actually the Vancouver Convention Centre was $900 million with about $220 million from the Feds. I know, I’m just splitting hairs.
