No Plan to Make Up for Missed School Days
Prince George, B.C. – With the teachers strike about to drag into the third week of September, how does School District 57 plan to make up for missed school days?
“That’s a very complex question. It will all depend of course when the strike ends. At this point there is no plan in place,” says Board Chairperson Sharel Warrington.
“The discussions of course would be taking place with our administrators though in looking at any possible way in which we would mitigate this issue.”
Warrington says cancelling spring break is likely off the table though because they’ve already agreed to shut schools during the 2015 Canada Winter Games in February.
“No it won’t be spring break. We have a contractual obligation and we have made a commitment. Unless of course the education minister were to legislate something differently, we are definitely responsible for that commitment.”

OMGoodness what will the school children do now? Their lives will be doomed forever!
If, or when, this ever ends, I’ll bet that the first week back will end with a Friday Pro-D day. Throw in the long Christmas (ooops….holiday season) break, a long spring break, other Pro-D days and the kids won’t have to spend many days in school this year.
Blue ribbon….move to the next grade.
Funny how the first to come out with acerbic comments regarding the days students miss is always those who blindly support the BCTF. I’m sure they will readily admit that it will be the parents that ensure lessons are caught up. What else is new?
Simple cut the “junk” out of the classes that is normally taught, stick to just the Board of Education basics and move along. No fancy or fluffy stuff this year, just wind them through. Yeah the whiners will start in shortly, but when it comes down the pipe, if you teach what is “actually required”, you don’t need a full school year.

High times for the public sector

Talking from experience Professional?
Prof, tell that to the Chinese and Japanese that only take 2 weeks off. Hmmmmm!
Let’s see how many show up for Saturday school.
Yeah. The Chinese and Japanese. Look at the suicide rate of their students.. Also it’s hard to compare completely different cultures. In China your life long path is chosen in grade school, japan around the same .. No chance to choose a career, your told which one you will be.. Fantastic thought isn’t it
@Jimmy Hughes….are you okay ? Did you misread something in my comment ? I thought so. Direct your blind hatred somewhere else.
Earlier on today on Garth Turner’s website someone named Inglorious Investor made the following comments:
“The main point that I’d like to make is this: In my opinion, it is immoral for public sector workers to be receiving increases in wages/salaries/pensions/benefits during a time that the private sector is experiencing high unemployment, stagnant or declining wages, meager or no pensions, and meager or no benefits.”
“Every time a private sector worker’s taxes increase in order to fund an increase in public sector pensions, every dollar taken is a dollar that the private sector worker is denied for his/her own pension. Every dollar taken to fund a pubic sector pay increase is a dollar denied to pay for the private sector worker’s own needs and the needs of his/her family. If the increases are initially funded with debt, then the burden is compounded with interest charges.”
“In my opinion, public sector workers should only get increases when the private sector is also getting increases (in aggregate of course). Again, all the money earned by the public sector comes from taxes. When private sector wealth is stagnant or declining, the public sector should not be getting increases. This approach only further weakens the private sector, causes economic imbalances, and social tensions. Taking more from those who have less is simply wrong.”
@Digit Imp..What are you talking about? Was my comment addressed to you? “…blind hatred” Dramatize much? Oh-the humanity!
Digitus. You and Jimmy are kindred spirits. Bad day?

Oh but they are getting raises Charles. I bet the teachers would love this kind of deal and drop the appeal of course!
“Steelworkers Ratify Deal At Six Interior Mills
By 250 News
Sunday, February 23, 2014 @ 5:15 AM
Prince George, BC – Members of the United Steelworkers Local 1-424 have ratified a five-year agreement with six northern interior mills…
Employees at Dunkley Lumber, Lakeland, Hampton Affiliates in Burns Lake (formerly Babine Forest Products), Stella Jones and West Fraser’s Houston Forest Products and Quesnel Plywood have voted in favour of the agreement, which sees a wage increase of 13-percent and cash payments of $3400 over the five-year term.
According to the union, the deal mirrors the industry pattern agreement and provides an additional pay enhancement of $2.50/hr for Tradespeople, along with improvements to health and welfare benefits.
Union members at Tolko, Conifex and Fraser Lake will be voting on the contract offer this coming week.”
Silly me. I was concerned about kids missing a lot of the school year. I forgot, this is 250 News and everything needs to be separated into “Left Wing” or “Right Wing” thinking.
So are the teachers digit that is why they are on strike! That is why they gave up wages years ago for class composition. They are tired of the rest of the class missing teaching time while they deal with some peoples little bundles of disruptive. But you knew that already right?
Frankly I could care less about Japanese and Chinese students and what they do for an education. We are talking about B.C. not another country here. Moving on what I am saying is if one looks at just the mandatory requirements for passing a grade and or graduation there is not a lot of material that need to be taught. Stripping away all the other fluff and staying just to the basic core materials the school year could be compressed greatly. Please try and stay on point, I know it’s hard for some of you (rolls eyes and chuckles).
Maybe you could pass you idea onto Iker Professional. Makes sense to me than you guys won’t need a pay raise just a condensed work week. I guess that’s why your the Professional. Why has no one else thought of this? or was your statement(rolls eyes and chuckles)possibly caused from a “brain fart”?
