Residents Buying into Curbside Recycling

Prince George,B.C. – The first scheduled cycle of curbside recycling is complete and Prince George residents seem to be buying in.
“So far things have been going really well. We’re getting lots of positive feedback and residents seem to be doing a really good job of getting their boxes to the curb and sorting the materials correctly,” says Managing Director for Multi-Material BC, Allen Langdon.
“I don’t know if we have everyone. Especially right after the long weekend participation wasn’t 100% but I think it’s gotten stronger as it goes on.”
Langdon expects participation rates will get up to 100% after the first couple of cycles and says there haven’t been too many hiccups along the way.
“The only thing really minor is just some people have been putting their containers to close to the garbage which creates a challenge for the city. They need about a two feet distance between the cart and the recycling containers.”

And in rural areas watch out for animals rummaging through the containers, and wind
Should containers be put on the street or left in driveway?
Just put the bins a good meter or so away from the garbage can and you’ll be fine, that’s what I did and recyclying dude came first and an hour or so later the garbage truck came and neither one had an issue. Shouldn’t be a tough situation to figure out.
People should however crush their milk jugs down so you can fit more in the bucket. I saw a few containers today where the jugs aren’t even flat, waste of space! A good wind would blow those away.
Unfortunately, half my neighbourhood seems to be off by a week! Ha. I guess it will take a while to get the hang of the biweekly thing.
I would love to continue recycling, but I am an apartment dweller and unworthy of a recycle box…and the recycle stations/bins around town, ie:- the one at 5th and Ospika are being removed..and as a senior I am not about to try and walk it to the dump….so I guess the dumpster gets it all now…
I understand that this recycling is to be paid for by the companies that produce the recyclables. I feel that in the case of the Citizen people are being made to pay for recycling in the form of a increase in Citizen subscriptions.
Interesting future issue with this recycling. Remember the water meter issue? Now with this recycling containers are to be rinced. So not only will prices go up but also the future cost of water.
