Six Year Teachers Deal
Prince George, B.C. – BC Premier Christy Clark says the tentative deal between the BCTF and provincial government today is for six years.
She calls it a “remarkable achievement” and thanks parents and children for their patience to “make sure we could do this the right way.”
Clark also thanked BCTF president Jim Iker, Education Minister Peter Fassbender and lead negotiator Peter Cameron for their efforts.
“We improved wages, improved class size and composition without going into deficit or raising taxes.”
She says it fits within the government’s “fiscal plan” and hopes if ratified, kids will be back in class next Monday.
Clark also said next month’s court case will still go forward while Education Minister Peter Fassbender says plans are in place to make up for missed school days.
Jim Iker has scheduled a news conference for 4:30 this afternoon to discuss his take on the deal.

Yeah Christie… You sure did this right (eyes roll).
Christie Clark was the reason this has taken so long in the first place.
So does school start again tomorrow?
It is a start, we can hope it is over but as we still don’t know the details anything can happen as in any union strike.
I don’t foresee any problem. I suspect everyone involved is glad it’s over. The compromise appears to be on both sides if the rumours are true. The government gets costs within its budget and the BCTF gets E80 removed so the matter can be settled in the courts. That’s a good compromise, from both sides. Now, for the sake of the children in school, let’s stop the blaming and move on.
Way to go Christie!
You’re the best!
Sock it too them teachers.
Way to lock em up for 6 years.
I smell a good deal for taxpayers.
YEAH School back Monday….or more likely Tuesday! I am sure after the extended summer and long hard hours on the picket lines the teachers will be needing a Pro-D Day. Must be nice!
@ammonra..you are mistaken. E80 or an equivalent is in the contract along with the “grievance fund” and the kickback that was requested by the BCTF. In-fact the new contract has a re-open clause that favours the government. They can re-open this contract in the event the court rules in THEIR favour. Sorry to burst your bubble, but this was an absolute capitulation. No-matter how you choose to spin it. Remember this was about the KIDS. Class size and composition will not change anytime soon. Just some extra money to waste within the existing system. This was yet another victory for Christy. She is proving to be one heck of a politician.
And this deal could not be done over the summer because of ????
Jimmy, E80 was a government proposal to allow them to cancel the collective agreement if the court appeal went against them. The compromise agreement appears to be that if the court appeal goes in the government’s favour, then they can renegotiate. That is a significant change agreed to by the government.
The CBC puts it this way, “However, the province is still appealing the court ruling and the contract includes a “reopener clause,” which in the event of a court decision in the province’s favour would allow it to revisit some of those issues.”
Notice that, “in the event of a court decision in the province’s favour”, not otherwise.
It is important to read government press releases and the Premier’s statements carefully. They have a long history of obfuscation and deceit. I would also point out that the details haven’t been released yet, so we are commenting on rumour and assumption. As I said, let’s be glad it’s over and move on, otherwise we may give the impression we want the dispute to continue for self serving, partisan, political reasons. I would like it to end so my grandchildren can go back to school.
Christy Clark was all smiles at her press conference. She looked a lot like she did after she won the election. It will be interesting to see if Jim Iker is smiling at his.
Just not to have to hear from the BCTF for six years is a good thing.
Thankyou Mr. Fassbender and Mr. Ready. No tail wagging the dog here.
BUT, where were Iker and crew in July and August. What? On vacation?
Oh……
When do we get 6 years of silence from johnnybelt?
JB, only in a perfect world…I am certain they will come out of their hole at election time as they are nothing but a political activist group.
I second that notion, verballabel. Unfortunately, I don’t think we’ll be that lucky. Good thing for us that we can just keep scrolling when we see “those” names.
+1 Verballabel

JB:

I believe that wages were not the stumbling block in settling this dispute.
Certainly, clause E80 was a problem, which you seem to ignore JB.
It has a lot to do with properly funding the system.
I am concerned for my grandkids. I see the teachers as standing up for students and those who criticize teachers, and constantly bringing up wages, as selfish, small-minded people who don’t care about kids.
1) Ammonra: For the sake of the children in school, let’s stop the blaming and move on.”
2) Ammonra: “They have a long history of obfuscation and deceit.”
3) Ammonra: “As I said, let’s be glad it’s over and move on, otherwise we may give the impression we want the dispute to continue for self serving, partisan, political reasons.”
Anybody see anything wrong with these comments appearing in the same thread?
BTW, Ammonra, Iker said that he wants to establish a better relationship with this government. Perhaps you did not notice?
Another label to add to the list. I know it’s hard for those spouting BCTF rhetoric to comprehend the concept that someone might have a different point of view than them. Did I influence anyone?
So many bitter dippers on here. You would think they would have known it was going to be yet another embarrassing defeat. I guess we can just scroll down past them all. It is election night all over again.
Yeah, I don’t know why they’re all so angry. Now that the teachers aren’t on strike anymore, they can go back to fighting the last election.
Oh please, give it a rest JB with the ‘who me?’ performance. You’re the poster child for closed minded.
Well Pylot, at least I can read an opinion different than mine without frothing at the mouth. It seems that many like yourself cannot.
Oh the teachers will be back in the news when the government loses in court AGAIN!
I heard 2% per year!
“Did I influence anyone?”
You bet JB – I used to only dislike unions :D
Well its about time. It was starting to feel like the old days all over around here when the NDP and the unions had control of the Province. Back then it seemed there was always one union or another on strike, or if not on strike yet, then threatening to “shut down the whole Province”, if they didn’t get their demands met by this or that date.
I guess it’ll never end.
PrinceGeorge you can nitpick all you want, taking comments out of context to spin a nonsense point. In context of my posts, and I encourage everyone to read everything I said not just the selected half sentences, they make perfect sense and are quite reasonable. Clearly, there are some on this site who are really upset that the strike has been amicably negotiated. Move on!
Who’s frothing? I’m not the one that screams “BS” and attacks at any given moment, whether it be this topic or any another. This goes beyond the subject of the Gov’t and the BCTF. Quite frankly, I think you’re just a narcissist who gets off on rubbing the fur backwards on any particular thread, as long as it gets a reaction. You never provide any kind of actual intellect to the discussion.
As much as I might disagree with the likes of Isis, Hart Guy, Axman and a few others, I still have respect for their onions. You, I have zero.
Pylot: “As much as I might disagree with the likes of Isis, Hart Guy, Axman and a few others, I still have respect for their onions. You, I have zero.”
Quite frankly, I couldn’t care less whether I have the ‘respect’ of an anonymous internet commenter. Maybe you should get over yourself a little bit.
JohnnyB … just curious, what is your motivation to comment?
Six years of having these high paid teachers mouths shut. That will bring peace for BC for a change
I thought some of the Liberal shills on here might like to read an excerpt from a letter by a Coquitlam Principal showing exactly how the government has been short changing our students.
Kevin Akins, principal of Cedar Drive elementary in Port Coquitlam, wrote an email to parents Monday that his school’s supply budget has been cut 87% since 2002, with the school having just $23,000 to spend on books and desks compared to $181,000 in 2002, when fewer students attended.
I have this overwhelming sense of contentment that it really was about the children. Thanks BCTF. Your petty display of how public sector unions think of society won’t be forgotin.
JB your to yappy to influence anyone and I truly doubt you are very high on ones preferential list. 6 years of silence verballabel I burst out laughing.
Thanks mattyc.
I could care less what they get paid or what was involved in the negotiations. Just get my kid back to school. Living in BC means we will pay some of the highest taxes in the world. As long as healthcare and education are in our best interest. I will pay and not complain. Just get back to work and educate my child so I can get on with my daily routine.
Saruman, the government has no control over how money is spent by the school boards, there are boards within the school board to decide how money is spent, Hall used to be one maybe ask him where the money is going since 2002. They closed a pile of schools so there must have been savings there. $ per student has not gone down, so where is the money going to drop 87 percent … to teachers wages and benefits maybe …
