It’s Back to School Today for Public School Students
Prince George, B.C.- It has been a delayed start to the school year, but today, classes resume in School District 57.
Having received word Friday afternoon that BCPSEA had ratified the contract which teachers had ratified the night before by 86%, SD 57 announced classes will be up and running today.
The buses will run on a normal pick up schedule this morning, but school will only be in session for an hour and a half.
There will be a gradual entry to all day kindergarten for the first timers, starting with today’s class only being 45 minutes, gradually leading up to a full day by the end of the second week.
SD 57 has announced there will be no extension to the school year, but there may be adjustments to the semesters and provincial exam times. Those adjustments have yet to be finalized and principals will be advising students and parents of the changes.
A reminder that all school zones are now back in effect, meaning you must slow to 30km/h in those zones on school days or risk a fine.

90 minutes? Seems rather pointless.
The idea is probably to take care of the administrative stuff, get organized, meet each other etc. and have time afterwards for the teachers to deal with all the odds and ends that come up that they weren’t ready for because of the lack of the usual prep time.
90 min. first day–happens every year.
Get with it.

My kids had a full day on their first day.
I remember years ago, when the first day was only half a day. Now it’s half of a half day, so that would be a quarter day, haha!
They have a short day the first day every year to do a number of things. Make sure all kids are registered in the right class, if it’s a split class to make sure it’s correct. Hand out supply lists, answer parents questions. Give times that classes are etc. it’s not just take roll call and teach… This isn’t a perfect world so there are things that need to be corrected etc.
