Canfor To Build Two New Pellet Plants
Prince George, B.C.- Canfor has announced it plans to build a pellet plant at Canfor’s Chetwynd and Fort St. John sawmill sites.
The pellet plants will be built and operated in partnership with Pacific Bioenergy Corporation.
In a release issued by Canfor, the company says the two plants will have a combined annual production capacity of 175,000 tonnes of wood pellets. The release states the sale of the pellets ” is tied to a long term agreement with a power utility customer.”
The total investment of $58 million will include electrical self-generation capacity of 3 megawatts supported through BC Hydro’s Power Smart Load Displacement Program.
According to BC Hydro, the project will displace 19.1 gigawatt hours of Canfor’s electricity consumption per year for 20 years.
The pellet plants are scheduled to start production in the third and fourth quarters of 2015.

Competition for Pinacle
no just getting ready to use all that wood that’s not s.p.f.less than 4″ and more than 32″ that’s been historically left in the forest to rot or burned because canfor didn’t want it counted against their quota.only the best logs make the mill.
speak up about the Lib’s plan for area based tenure, another gift for the major forest companies.
I can’t seem to see the link to share the story by email?
Phodgson,
In case you haven’t been in the bush lately you will see that the average of a slash pile from Ft St John to Ft St James has declined drastically. This is due to Canfor finally utilizing the wood.
As for Area based tenure anyone, with any experience, at all will have a strong opinion that yes- you should be responsible for one area. Currently it’s like we own a mansion and you eat from the multiple fridges, sleep in the multiple beds, and use whichever bathroom you prefer. We are running out caviar and tenderloin, and the champagne has been drunk. Why? Because in a volume based tenure there is no incentive to save anything because someone else will just take it.
My two bits. The pellet mills are fantastic news at multiple levels and PBECs main buyer is Electrabel who is Belgiums main utility and the pellets are burned in their coal plants with coal, thereby reducing the need for coal burning. Hard to find a downside.
