Prince George, B.C.- It won’t be long before  4th Avenue,  east of Winnipeg Street,  is  open to two way traffic.

Crews were working on the weekend installing the necessary signage and lights at Winnipeg Street, the intersection  where the transition from one way to two way  will take place.

All that’s left to do is to complete the line painting on the roadway and the project will be “good to go.”

The 4th Avenue   project had  an estimated cost of $400 thousand dollars.

The work included the following:

  • upgrades to traffic signals and signage at the Dominion and Queensway crossings
  • reduction in the number of lanes from  three to  2 (east of Winnipeg Street)
  •  increase sidewalk space at the Brunswick, Quebec, and Dominion intersections,
  • Installation of traffic lights and signage at Winnipeg Street.

Angle parking will not be allowed on 4th, as the roadway just isn’t wide enough, so parallel parking will continue.

The transition from one way, to two way traffic will happen at Winnipeg Street. New, westbound traffic will have to turn left or right at Winnipeg

“Angle parking will not be allowed on 4th, as the roadway just isn’t wide enough, so parallel parking will continue.”

I thought this was one of the big selling points of the conversion? More parking was supposed to bring in more shoppers.

It too was my understanding that the whole purpose of this project was to change from parallel parking back
to angle parking. Maybe the city can post the original proposal on opinion 250 just to refresh our memories.

Originally yes, i think that was the plan. Early on in the process it was identified that there wasnt enough room for angle parking. Where have you been?

Another $400 grand ++ down the toilet. Can someone explain the benefits to the taxpayer for this project? I liked the prior traffic flow because you could drive around people parallel parking.

There is money for 4th ave but not for pine valley?
Look at all the retail closing on 4th?
Obviously the business owners didn’t think two way traffic was going to help.

How about this. Start firing people for being incompetent. Not that hard to figure out the width of a road.

I was under the impression that the original reason for the conversion was so the RCMP could respond westbound from the new station on fourth saving time. I may be wrong though.

Another Snow Job by the incompetents at City Hall???

I think you are right, however I don’t remember that as reason for the conversion???

@spruce_captial

Yes, that did come up throughout the process. It is the Primary reason for this. A secondary reason IMO is slowing down traffic through DT. People would use fourth as a throughway. This will stop that, thank god.

I think that the two way to Winnipeg St., is just the beginning. The long term plan seems to be to put in a **roundabout at the present junction where 3rd merges into 5th westbound, and 5th (eastbound) merges into 4th.

With a roundabout you would be able to go from 5th to 3rd or 4th Eastbound, and to 5th, 4th, 3rd, etc; Westbound.

So the $400,000.00 is just a drop in the bucket if this is the case.

hire another consultant !!

“The 4th Avenue project had an estimated cost of $400 thousand dollars.” At one point maybe but on June 9 2014 a report was submitted to council where the budget for the 4th Avenue Conversion was $934,000. Wonder why they keep saying it’s a $400,000 project?

Happy to see bike racks installed in the sidewalk bulbs on new part of 4th. Makes for better parking for bikes rather than have them chained to trees.

Yes. The original estimated budget was $400k and then at a council meeting they found the actual estimate should be $934k. So i wonder if it came in under $1mil?

phje: the reason it was changed to a one way, years ago, was so that people could get downtown a lot quicker. Same reason 3rd and 2nd were changed to one way streets. so people could get home faster. It seems that its ’round ’round we go!

@give More

Sure, but it had the opposite effect, People were using it to go through downtown. It is 5000X better as a two way with 4 ways. the way it should be in a downtown.

This is stupid. Seeing the traffic on it at 8 am it’s pretty clear everyone uses it to get downtown to work. Now let’s reduce it from 3 lanes to 1. Way to go city. Add more stoplights, more 4 ways… Make sure people can’t get anywhere downtown efficiently. It will make people want to go there that much more.

Won’t be long before those pink bricks will be covered in weeds.

I’m pretty sure this was the plan all along; force us all to crawl through that hole that is the downtown and maybe one of us will still and spend some money.

This traffic change will lead to many more accidents.

With traffic no longer having three lanes Eastbound and only one lane they will not only have to wait for the people that are parallel parking, but also those trying to make a left turn creating a long wait for the congested opposing lane to clear for a hole, for each car that needs to turn….

People will get impatient and start taking risks crossing traffic.. all the backed up traffic, then how will anyone get out of their parking spot if they ever manage to park? It will be bumper to bumper congestion at 8am on I bet….
