Prince George, B.C. – Trusted experience.

That’s the re-election slogan this time around for School District 57 Trustee Betty Bekkering.

“It’s the trust of senior administration, school administrators. I’m feeling quite confident that they trust me.”

She says she wasn’t initially sure about making a four year commitment this time around but says her spouse helped inspire her to run again.

“He said the electorate deserves the benefit of my learning curve. I thought he’s exactly right, the last three years have been a steep learning curve learning all about the district, the bylaws, the teachers.”

Bekkering fears one of the biggest challenges ahead is her gut feeling the provincial government would like to amalgamate school districts.

“It seems to be quite subtle right now but they’re waiting to have a look at bringing school boards together very much like health units. So I think that’s going to be a major struggle.”

And with all the recent labour pains in the district she says they need to mend some fences

“There’s a lot of bad feelings. I hope people are able to get on with the day to day of schools and it seems to be happening but I think there’s probably some hard feelings still.”

And Bekkering says the issue of class size and composition must be resolved.

“We hope the teachers win in Supreme Court and I don’t see why they won’t. And once that’s resolved we need to figure out what is a workable sized classroom? How many specialized teachers should be in there?”

Nothing like an unbiased public school trustee is there?

I’d much rather have a biased public school trustee in favour of improving the public education system than one in favour of destroying it.

That’s who you want as a trustee — someone who has an adversarial opinion and relationship with the government. It’s worked so well for the BCTF for the past 30 years.

Before you folks go “trusting” this woman who is blowing her own horn, might I remind you that Prince George School District has the reputation as the most rascist school board due to the amount of bullying that has forced several children out of school in the past few years? Coquitlam School Board uses Prince George as an example, in their “Zero Tolerance” meetings surrounding bullying, as the worst School District in BC. Children of Aboriginal Descent are number one victims and then the list takes a turn toward FASD affected, Autistic, and obese children as being next in line or targeting. When speaking to the Superintendant of Schools, Brian Pepper, he has no contact and refuses to address the subject. How can a Board of Trustees brag about being trusted when our children are not comfortable or safe in this district? Just a reminder before offering her your vote!

“He said the electorate deserves the benefit of my learning curve. I thought he’s exactly right, the last three years have been a steep learning curve learning all about the district, the bylaws, the teachers.”

That’s quite the ego she’s got going there too.
