Artist Greg Gislasen  calls “Let the Games Begin”  as his mural is  revealed at  the Prince George Airport -photos 250News

Prince George, B.C.- It is a mural that depicts everything about B.C. in general, and Prince George in particular.

Commissioned as part of the  cultural and arts portion of the 2015 Canada Winter Games,  artist Greg Gislason  took 5 months to create the mural that will be viewed by  all who arrive at the Prince George International Airport.

The mural depicts the Nechako Cutbanks, wildlife, locomotives, gold panners and  paddlewheelers.  There  is homage to the forest industry with a  lumberjack swinging an axe on a tree, and a  saw blade cutting through a log.

The Spirit bear, and orcas may not be  home to  Prince George,  but are every bit as much  a part of  B.C. as the  Dogwood flower and  Pacific coast line.  There is reference to  fly fishing,  flight and  mountain goats,  skiing, snowboarding, skating, snowmobiling, hockey  and Nanguz.  Of course,   what would a mural about Prince George be without the man himself?  Mr. P.G. is front and centre.

Gislason said getting the news that he had been chosen to do the mural  was  something he will never forget “I felt like a King,  I didn’t know what king of competition was out there.”

He said that as soon as he heard about the contest,  he  knew what he was going to do, he had a vision.   He did a mock up on the bare drywall in a friend’s home.

Gislason’s mural was revealed in the midst of a hail storm, “It’s snowing on my parade” said Gislason, “That’s O.K., this is Prince George”  and he  added “I love this town!”

Gislason said the mural wouldn’t have been completed on time had it not been for a team that helped him complete the project.

“I did this whole thing from my heart” says Gislason.mural2

And while not saying so, there is an image in this mural  of a  man in a tube on the river. That  man bears a striking  resemblance to the artist himself.

That is absolutley beautiful….great job Greg….nice intro to Prince George, now about the smell???????

Lets just keep driving a wedge between us.

There have been quite a few projects recently in which Lheidli T’enneh and the City cooperated. Lheidli people do have a separate history, and many of the events that for non-native people were cause for celebration have a different character for Lheidli people. Having separate murals is perhaps more of an acknowledgement of these differences than an effort to drive a wedge between us.

hello willy …. wedges serve all sorts of functions … including keeping doors wedged open.

I fail to understand how securing two artists from different parts of our community is divisive … I choose to interpret it as respectful and inclusive … I am confident the Lheidli T’enneh artists will share their perspective elegantly … they surely do not need to rely on others to tell their story.

Nice piece of art, Greg. You and your support group should be proud!!!

Looks, great, I think I will have to take a spin out there to really appreciate the new work. The first thing that came to my mind after reading the article and looking at the photo again in more detail was that the native people of the area are represented by the depiction of the fellow in the canoe.

It looks like poop. IMHO

I think it looks great, but why not have an eagle more prominently on it Glen? ;)

You cannot call it art and not be open to criticism.

Prince george girl

Maybe we could add a scratch and sniff portion to the art….lol….Beautiful work

Oh My God!! Where`s the tractor?
They are driving a wedge between us farmers. LOL
I do have to say that is some really beautiful work. Way to go!

Willyj

By god, I think you have a great idea there…..people could scratch & sniff before coming into the bowl of Prince George…LOL, but it must have a fee for scratching & sniffing……….

How much did this lovely piece cost?
Cheers
