Operation Red Nose Needs You
Prince George, B.C.- October is here, and as the month progresses, there will be plans made for Christmas parties.
That’s why Operation Red Nose is putting out the call for volunteers now.
Operation Red Nose provides driver services to get partiers, and their vehicles, home safely.
Last year, Operation Red Nose provided 1008 safe rides home over the nine nights it was in operation.
It took nearly 260 volunteers to reach that mark.
Volunteers are needed to answer phones or be part of the three member road team. Volunteers must be 19 years old and have a valid driver’s license. Applications, which include a Criminal Record Check form, are available online at www.ornpg.ca. Volunteers can simply fill it out, print it out and take it, along with their driver’s license, to the RCMP’s main detachment on Victoria Street.
This will be the 17th season for the free service, organized by the Rotary Club of Prince George.

Why can’t people just call a taxi? They certainly know ahead of time that they will be drinking. Why not leave the car at home and take taxis (or just take a cab home and go pick up your car in the morning)? If you can afford to be out celebrating, you can certainly afford a couple of cab fares. I just think that Operation Red Nose is a well-intentioned but unnecessary service that does nothing but directly compete with local taxi drivers during what should be their busiest time of year. I even volunteered for Red Nose a number of years ago, but now realize this problem with it. If I was running a business that provided a perfectly suitable service and every year the community jumped all over some free volunteer alternative, I’d be choked.
do volunteer drivers have to supply their own vehicle and fuel?
@jules
Not the same service. Red nose gets your vehicle home too. Apples to Oranges.
@phje read my full comment… I know exactly how Red Nose works. I said plan ahead and leave your car at home… You know you will be drinking if you are out for a Christmas function.
@jules
I did read it all.
My point is that the taxi companies should up their game during this time. Provide faster service and get my car home safe and I might consider them a viable option.
Apples to Oranges.
P.G. Taxi at least, does have drivers who will drive your vehicle home for you.
A few years back I waited two hours for a cab to get to the company function and then three hours to get home, at just over $40 per direction. I have used Red Nose ever since. Drive there when we want and then get both of us home plus the car with less than a half an hour wait and a donation. Not even a comparison.
Give more – youre a braver man than me if you would let one of PG Taxis drivers take your vehicle home…
The Hart Community Centre has shuttle busses to get you home. It is a great place for company functions.
