Pubs and Lot Size Before Council
Prince George, B.C.- The application to increase the seating capacity at the Cowboy Ranch Pub on Queensway in Prince George, is back before council this evening.
The Cowboy Ranch Pub would like to have Council’s support in its application to the Liquor Licensing Branch to triple its seating capacity and extend its hours.
A public hearing on the matter was started at the last meeting of Council, but was adjourned to this week to allow Councillors time to read the mountain of material produced by the applicant at the hearing.
City staff recommend Council send a letter opposing such an increase in capacity citing concerns expressed by the RCMP.
There will also be a public hearing on the proposal to allow smaller lots for residential development in certain areas of the City. The areas included the heritage community of the “Crescents”.

The crescents development is a no brainer…. but this city is still not ‘open for business’ and will shoot down another way for developers to make the city grown.
With the choke hold on drinking and driving. ie; .05 to .08 being subject to fines, and suspensions, why would anyone go into the business of selling liquor in public places.
Unless everyone who drinks in public places, either restricts themselves to one or two drinks, or they all have designated drivers.
Left hand clamps down on drinking, right hand builds bigger and better drinking facilities.
Palopu, when I go to the bar, I take a taxi so problem solved, no drink & driving. It’s not only a great business to be in selling liquor, it’s also a great business for the taxi drivers.
mythoughts. That may work well for you, however when you look around the bar, do you really believe that the rest of the clientele will take a taxi, or have a designated driver???
Well, we sure wouldn’t want there to be any night life for people to go out and dance and have a good time.
I believe that if someone is going to drink and drive, they are going to drink and drive at any old location. I do not believe that having a new venue available for fun will MAKE people drink and drive.
I also believe that times have changed and that there is more awareness resulting in less drinking and driving. The people I know who like to go out are responsible and make arrangements in advance or at the very least call for a ride, whether it be a cab or a friend or family member.
I find it frustrating that someone can open a cold beer and wine store on any corner, however, night life is frowned upon.
The biggest complaint I hear from young people (and some not so young people) in this town is that there is no decent night life. They are right.

So very true northernspirit…….:)
I’d be interested in knowing what the Liquor Inspector’s recommendation is on that pub.
This is a copy of the letter I sent to the mayor and council members. Pretty much sums up my position.
To the Mayor, Council, and City Managers
I support cowboy ranch expansion for PG’s only country rock cabaret
On recent trips and my travel over BC for vacation this summer, I noted that Prince George is sadly lacking in entertainment and things to do; in fact Prince George even has less pub and entertainment houses than Williams Lake, which has some impressive spots considering the size of the city.
I asked people I know in Kelowna how all those businesses manage to get outdoor patios approved in areas bordering residential neighborhoods, and was told that the city depends on tourism and the business owners that cater to the tourists and nothing gets in the way of that, especially not some whiney minority group of area homeowners. Basically you know what’s there before you move in so deal with it. The long and short of it, is homeowners take a back seat in the name of business and tourism, and that is why it’s such a beautiful city to be in.
The reason Prince George is so sadly lacking is that the council, mayor and city managers let a small minority of tea-totaling residents dictate how businesses are ran and that is to the detriment of our city. It’s ugly, we have very few outdoor seating options available, and nothing to do from an entertainment perspective.
Everytime someone tries to open and entertainment venue in Prince George, they are shot down because a minority of residents yelled loud enough and the city was stupid enough to listen to them.
The winter games will be here soon and Prince George will not make a good impression on visitors if they can’t find any good entertainment after the events are over; nor will they want to come back to visit here. If you keep letting whiney tea-totallers dictate how are city is to operate, you will shoot yourselves in the proverbial foot and the investment in the winter games will be a waste, because no one will want to return to this boring, ugly city.
For once do the right thing and approve the expansion requested by the Cowboy Ranch. This venue had worked very hard at providing top-notch bands and entertainment; something not available elsewhere.
Sincerely
Homeowner and taxpayer
I find it interesting the Kirk Gable is the lead proponent of a PAC for the downtown, sits on and at times has chaired the downtown commissions on revitalization… and yet when the opportunity present itself he supports an expansion of his neighborhood pub into a full fledged night club well outside the downtown?
So am I getting this right… downtown good when spending property tax dollars from outside the downtown for revitalization… but downtown is not good when developing a nightclub that could contribute to a better nightlife in the PG downtown?
I think a residential neighborhood is never a good place for a nightclub. I think it is better to cluster them in one area so people that are bar hoping are not out driving on our roads.
If I had the final say in the matter then I would like to see the city nightlife, and related businesses, all located between Victoria and George… mostly around the area of the Inn of the North would make the most sense for an area of town that is safe at night and already has the public infrastructure in place to support a build up of the night life lifestyle.
Time Will Tell
It is my understanding that Brock Gable is the owner of this establishment, not Kirk Gable.
Golds gym would make a fantastic location for a nightclub IMO… maybe a good nightclub in the new Delta Hotel by 2020 if ever, or the Simon Fraser when its renovated… or maybe something in its own new standalone building in an entertainment area of the city.
And so it is… thanks for the correction.
I am confused by this council, RCMP and city planning department. They don’t want a cabaret downtown(old Odeon location) and now the same people do not want one away from the downtown core… Maybe a cabaret located in Hixon or Bednesti is more to their liking.
As I am one of the local musicians that play live music in this city (including the Cowboy Ranch) I can honestly say that I am in total agreement with R5t5e4m6c and northernspirit. In the 90’s I played a different pub every weekend on a 6 week rotation (so six different venues) and now I play once a month maybe. Its not just young people that are looking for a place to dance its also the middle aged demographic looking for a place to dance to Country rock music. The Legion is also providing live music and dancing but thats only 2 consistant venues aside from special events and the DJ based Generator club, in a city this size. It has sure been sad to see the desimation of live music and the nite life in general. My wife and I went downtown for desert and coffee on Saturday night at 7:45pm and the streets were dead. Both Oh Chocolat and Books and company cafe were closed. Theres not even a coffee shop open down there on a Saturday night at 7:45pm. What the hell happend to this city.
I am in favour of the proposed Cowboy Ranch expansion and the request for extended operating hours. The industry is heavily regulated and I support private enterprise.
Secondly, I am in favour of infill within the city however, not at the expense of current property values.
The night club at the odeon was being proposed by the same people that ran the pg hotel into the ground and made it the favorite drinking spot for hookers and drug dealers – you would have done the same if it was in your neighborhood. It barely borders on the downtown and is almost in the residential. The only reason they picked that location was because it was the cheapest and required no Investment on their part.
Make no mistake about it, if that night club had been proposed by individuals that showed that they could be good, responsible neighbors it would have went through. Instead they showed up and told the neighborhood that they wanted to make it there because it was cheap for them to do so.
Technically we could make the Cowboy Ranch the new Performing Arts Center if they get that many seats. Two birds with one stone.
