Horrible accident, my thoughts go out to the victims, families, and the driver/passengers involved.
Not to victim blame here, but what were the chances that they were both dressed in all black? I do a lot of night driving around town for my job and I can’t believe how many people in dark clothing randomly cross the street when I’m close, instead of just waiting for me to pass or crossing at lights. The stretch of highway by the casino is really bad for it.

That is horrible. ..I use 1st Avenue daily to go too and from work. ..there is zero room for bikes or pedestrians and with the bottle depot you have all kinds of traffic vehicle and pedestrian. .

Sad, a night at the bar turns tragic. Why does the oldest street in PG not have lighting along it? Will this be used tonight in an effort to shut down the Queensway proposal?

Good point about the lack of lighting! The speed limit is 50km/h and as long as everybody remembers that it should be alright.

My condolences.

Commenters on this site are great at making judgements without knowing all the facts but let’s try not to do that when someone has just lost their life, eh preegee.

My thoughts go out to his friends and family.

Lack of lighting? There are street lights on almost every power pole along first Ave.

Not that people shouldn’t obey the speed limit, but 1st Avenue does present a problem because it is a major thoroughfare and in fact part of Highway 16, so people are strongly inclined to drive faster and expect to be able to do so. Whenever you have what looks like it should be a relatively high speed road with a low speed limit, even if well justified, you’re asking for trouble.

What does speed have to do with this incident? Two guys j walking in the dark across a hwy.

Shufflekick, I offered condolences to the family. I made an observation as to my experiences driving around this town at night, no judgements. I see too many people crossing busy streets in dark clothing at unlit sections nightly. Many just start walking without looking. I don’t speed (company vehicle with GPS) and have had several close calls myself, along with several other people I work with.

Condolences to the family as well. It was also raining last night, which makes it more difficult to see. Sad night.

I don’t see any street lights in the picture. .

“What does speed have to do with this incident? Two guys j walking in the dark across a hwy.”

Drangon master how do you know they were J walking? how do you know someone just didn’t stop at the light or crosswalk? Were you there.

Condolences to the family and friends of this young person taken too soon.

DragonMaster: (a) PrinceGeorge mentioned speed; (b) people crossing the road in the dark are more likely to be hit the higher the speed the vehicles are moving since they have less time to react when they and if they see the pedestrians.

A quick look at google’s street view shows lots of street lights on one side of that street.

Drive at 50km/h on First Avenue and count the vehicles which pass at 60 or 70 or more. Result: All of them.

Indicating that perhaps the speed limit is too low on that road?

sasssay, read the story. No traffic lights or crosswalks.

Sasssay…Your respond to DragonMaster asking if he was there to know if they were jaywalking. Says right in the story the accident did not happen at a crosswalk or where there are lights. Still a very sad outcome and condolences to the family and hopefully a quick recovery for the other fellow.

Axman suggests ==>Indicating that perhaps the speed limit is too low on that road?

Anotherside counters ==> Indicating that perhaps there continues to be a lack of enforcement of traffic laws.

Sasssay, I was there. I watched it happen no more than 6 feet in front of me. They were j walking, it was dark, rainy, I could barely see them walking across. They walked out, narrowly missed getting hit by another vehicle heading westbound, started running across and right in front of the lady who hit them. Im not placing blame, but merely saying it was a culmination of several unfortunate circumstances that ended in tragedy. My condolences to the families and victims of all involved.

Tomatoe, tomato. Personally, I’m of the belief that if 99% of the people are doing 60 then that’s a reasonable speed for that road.

So your tiny Brains will tell you what the proper Speed for any given Road should be, in other Words take all the Sign down and you will make your own Rules!

Speaking of tiny brains, what’s with all the capitals?

In other words, if 99% of the traffic is consistently doing 60 kmh in what is now a 50 kmh zone, perhaps it’s time to raise the limit to 60 since damn near everyone is comfortable doing 60.

“Personally, I’m of the belief that if 99% of the people are doing 60 then that’s a reasonable speed for that road.”

Talked to an RCMP officer some years about speed limits being ignored. He argued that speed limits are set intentionally low because everybody will go faster by 10 to 15km/h. In other words if they make it 80km/h the final result will be 90 or 95. Proof is out on any highway. Set the cruise control at 100km/h when that is the posted speed limit and count the cars that will pass outdoing each other! Result: All of them.

Besides being part of the highway system, it is also a city street. Speed limits on city streets are 50 KpH except where otherwise indicated.
Very sad accident but anywhere there is a bar, people don’t always have clear thinking.
Also there, at night, in the rain with on coming headlights glaring at you, visibility is pretty poor.

Very sad.

I’ve crossed there in daylight at the train station (Quebec St. I think) where there is a crosswalk and it’s scary even then. People just don’t pay attention to crosswalks or pedestrians and believe you me I don’t step out til they’re stopped but if I never step out they never stop. Nice catch 22. I prefer to live so I wait but that’s daylight and sober and at a crosswalk. Nightime and drunk (if they were) and no crosswalk, it would be harder to judge safely.

Bottom line is everyone needs to be more careful.

I see all the bleeding heart Libs in PG are blaming the driver, and not the pedestrians…

I have repeatedly reported the dangerous situation at the intersection of Austin Road and Highway #97. Drivers have absolutely no regard for pedestrians. When someone dies, the RCMP will tell us they patrolled the area but in truth, you never see the RCMP in the area or any of the residential areas where speeding traffic is so common.

People park across the street from alibis….there is a street light on the other side of the cross walk and there is a pedestrian crossing a 100 feet up. ..just afriek accident for 2 guys just out having fun feel bad for the driver and the families. ..

My heart goes out to all the Families involved in this tragic accident. Hopefully there will be some recommendations so this doesnt happen again at that horrible crossing. Theres no way you should have to park across a 4 lane highway for Alibis. Maybe CN should lock there entrance to that parking lot and the city put no parking after 9pm all along 1st Ave! Patrons should be able to park in the back or maybe they should relocate there entrance to the back also! i drive buy there LOTS day and night for work. With the entrance 6ft-10ft from the Highway and cars parked out in front you cant see over i cant count how many times I’ve had to slam on the breaks for patrons running across the road in both directions in front of me! Its so unnecessary these tragedies. The whole setup need to be changed once and for all! No ones going to use that cross walk 200+ft away! Its a real nice crosswalk but folks will always take the path of least resistance. Prayers sent to all the families involved. :[

That parking lot has nothing to do with CN, it goes with the VIA building and whoever else is in there.
