Too Close To Call The Mayors Race In Prince George
It is hard to put a handle on who is running for council and what might be their position in the upcoming Civic Election. Suffice to say that the mayor’s race will take the most spotlight in the coming weeks, although the race for councillors should be interesting .
Will the bad taste that seems to have existed over the deliberations at City Hall during Mayor Shari Green’s reign spill over onto the Councillors seats?
It may .
At the very least some Councillors, and in particular Cameron Stolz, face a voter who has not been happy with how the City has been managed.
Stolz has been at the Mayor’s side over the past few years, up to the point where he, along with a group, was able to take over the Directors of the Cariboo- Prince George riding of the federal Conservatives party. While Green and her supporters have not made it official yet, make no mistake ,they have been behind the scene trying to sell memberships in the hopes that they will be able to hand her the federal nomination. Stolz is now President of that riding association and that may not be a bonus for him municipally. Matter of fact, given that he failed to pay his taxes while occupying the chair of Finance and Audit committee in Prince George, one might say his stock is very limited.
We still don’t know the circumstances of how and why Todd Doherty suddenly departed from the Winter Games, rumour has it, it was not his choice. If you add TJ Grewal to the mix, Green( in spite of her group taking over the directors of the riding) will likely run a strong third in the race.
So what’s shaping up in the Mayoral race?
Zurowski and Hall appear at this time to be neck and neck. It depends on who you ask as to who thinks who, will get the Mayor’s Chair.
We have a few days remaining to see who might come out of the woodwork for Council.
I’m Meisner and that one man’s opinion.

so no matter who is elected we will end up with pretty much what we have now just the same faces in different places.
You are right on bcracer , same old same old more taxes, more taxes .
I’m still wondering why so many conservative members down the PG/Caribou riding didn’t know in advance about the AMG in May. Where was the direct written notification?? Seems to me, if you’re planning a board takeover, its wise to only invite your friends…
…so an article with no stats or polls to backup the discussion. Wonderful stuff here.
Zurowski was part of the old green team so no thanks.
I want to know their position on the PAC. That will show me who knows reality from fantasy.
Seems to me there are a lot of upset people working at the city. It is now, “just a job” and a few years back people were proud to say they worked there. Some may still be proud but it seems like few are happy. In my experience people don’t go out of there way when unhappy.
So has anyone gone into a situation like this and supported real change. Seems to me this is the way the school board was in the beginning of Lyn’s time at the school board and he was a big part in the up swing there and why he had such great support for councillor. To bad he had not run for mayor, we would not have the unrest we have now.
The question about the conservative Edo you would have to talk to the secretary and ask them who notices were sent to. I am not sure who that is but I think Ben wrote about it earlier this year.
Well said Lives here long time!
Its very disheartening to see the toxic environment created by our current mayor, actually quite shameful! I agree with you on Lyn Hall, it will take strong leadership to not only fix the negatively but to effectively manage and draw positive strength from each new and some existing members in the new council. Greens heavy handed, non communicative and sit down and shut up leadership is truly the definition of insanity.
As for who was the secretary in charge of notification prior for the PG/Caribou riding association AGM… I believe that was Cameron Stolz.
I found it. A little off topic but here i the article:

What if they support a PAC…. with private funds?
I’m scared that we are going to have an office decided purely on the basis of whether they support a PAC or not. Scary stuff.
We need to be sure what the hell we are doing this time around. These people are going to be in office for (4) years, so we better get it right.
Zurowski Was a councilor in 1999, 2002,and 2005, the same years that Kinsley was Mayor, he then ran for Mayor in 2008 and lost to Dan Rodgers.
Cant think of anything specific that Zurowski did while a councilor, however in my opinion he had 9 years as a councilor was rejected in his bid for Mayor, and for all intents and purposes is yesterdays man.
Hall on the other hand has been a councilor for the past three years, has gained the experience he needs to become Mayor, actually has some long term plans for the City, has the ability to look at a situation and see both sides. We need a steady hand at City Hall for the next 4/8 years. In that regard I would say that Hall is the man.
I somehow cannot see us getting much bang for our buck from Wilbur, Koehler. Stoltz causes us nothing but grief, and is only concerned about raising our taxes. I expect one day he will suggest that they put parking meters in our driveways.
So lets go with Everett, Frizzell, Skakun, Krause (perhaps) and 4 newbys.
Just a suggestion.
Only Koehler so far. Zurowski? No. Lyn Hall? He is the only other candidate as of today. Swagger and strutting the stuff don’t appear to be part of his character and that is a good thing because three years of that was enough, in my opinion.
“What if they support a PAC…. with private funds?”
As far as I know nobody is opposed to a PAC in and of itself. Opposition to the PAC is opposition to paying for it with public funds. If the funds could be raised privately that would be fine with everyone.
Phje, if it was going to be funded by private cash it would have been built already.
The reason I want to know their position on the PAC is two fold. One..if they are against it they understand fiscal responsibility in not driving us deeper in debt for something not needed. Two if they are against it they actually listen to the voting public.
Two things I think are needed to be mayor and council, don’t you ?
Right now we are not listened to, and they way green and friends are putting us in debt we need it stopped immediately.
Palopu – “Stoltz causes us nothing but grief, and is only concerned about raising our taxes.”
How can Stolz be concerned about raising our taxes, when he can barely afford to pay his own?
You mention Wilbur as someone not worthy of our vote – is he even running?
And what about Deborah Munoz? She is a smart, hard working person who proved herself in 2008 to 2011. The only reason she lost in 2011 was the PG voters punishing her for her part in the Skakun fiasco. My fist “X” will be beside her name.
“What if they support a PAC…. with private funds?”
Just look at all the private funds that have been raised already. :)-
If you are going to vote for Lyn Hall you are just revoting for Sherri Green. Have you disagreed with any of the decisions that Green has made over her time as Mayor? Lyn Hall hasn’t! He voted with her on every vote. Zurowski hasn’t been around for a few years but at least he can make an educated decision on his own.
I had a few working with Mr. Hall when I worked for the SD#57 for many years, and my community school with him being the head of the SD#57 trustees. I personally found him very down to earth and pleasant to talk to. Be nice to have a good mayor this time around. Still my favourite was Colin Kinsley from the past. I’m writing a report on the councillors & mayors this time around so I been researching all of them in depth.
Ben Meisner,
You opinion peace on the upcoming Mayors race sucks. You get an F.
With 287 words on beating the bushes about Shari Green and Cameron Stoltz and just over 50 words about the actual topic…I already know your feelings about these two people. But for this article, move on.
I am not a writer, scribe or journalist, but here is a hint….stick to the topic or change the title of the article.
Don Zurowski was on council during the years when snow removal was seen as first rate and Prince George was seen as a model of how to do it.
Lyn Hall was on council when snow removal is seen as worst in class. Don has no connection to Shari Green and I don’t know where that rumor is coming from. Don has many of the qualities of Colin Kinsley and Lyn has many characteristics of Dan Rogers. Sees all sides and makes no decision until he sees which way the wind blows. He and his group of 5 having been running council for the past year not the Green gang. How many decisions were made that were reversed. They didn’t seem to be too bothered by a 100% cost over run on 4th avenue. I am leaning towards a bring in a whole new council vote this last group was so dysfunctional that I don’t think any of them deserve our vote. A lot of finger pointing by the current crew but don’t see any of them willing to take responsibility for their actions.
Get real superdave! Your comments are not only untrue, but quite bizarre. Lyn Hall is as far away from Shari Green as Stolz was to his tax bill!
In fact Hall, Krause, Everett, Frizzell and Skacun should be applauded for putting up with the toxic Green team mess for the last 2 years. At least they are working for the Citizens of this community!!
Since the candidates haven’t all done a good job of articulating their positions on the issues, perhaps Opinion250 could make up a list of questions about the issues that seem to be of particular concern, e.g. the PAC, snow removal, road maintenance, administrative staff, ask all of the candidates to respond, and post the results in tabular form so that people can compare the candidates’ positions.
Bill Poser,
That is what all candidates meetings are for; forget the posting idea. That is just another form of ducking the public….ask them the questions in open forum, watch the body language, etc….This forum is just one way…………always has been, always will be.
Ron J Davis
Ron J Davis,
There are several advantages to posting written responses. One is that written responses are a lot easier to compare and mull over. Another is that you probably can’t get the answers to a whole set of questions at a forum due to the limited time since the candidates speak serially but can fill out questionnaires in parallel. Finally, at a forum on many issues they can say that their position is too complicated for a soundbite or that they need to look into it. On a questionnaire it is reasonable to expect them to give a real answer to every question.
That doesn’t mean that asking live questions as well is not useful, to see how well prepared they are and what their body language and manner is, but I think that the two approaches complement one another.
Lyn Hall hasn’t proven anything in his one term, and it’s too bad that he chose this term to run for mayor. He probably should have served one more term as a councillor. It pains me to say that, because I have been a big Lyn Hall supporter in the past.
Zurowski has the experience and the backround, but I don’t think he’ll be much change than what we’ve had for the past 3 or 4 mayors. It will be a tough decision.
And like it or not, despite many of the pundit’s wishes of a clean sweep, many of the current councillors will likely get in again mostly on name recognition, not about what they’ve done or haven’t done.

I heard through the grapevine, the same people that got Green in are backing Zurowski.
