Booze in Grocery Stores Just Around the Corner

Prince George, B.C.- The Provincial Government has announced it will be going forward with the “store within a store” model to sell liquor in grocery stores.
The stage is being set to allow the practice to start in the Spring of 2015.
There are some restrictions though, as the grocery store has to be at least 10,000 square feet in size, and will require that 75% of its sales come from food products. Liquor sales will not be allowed in big box stores or in convenience stores.
Details on wholesale pricing and grocery stores selling B.C. wine off the shelf are expected in the coming months.

Is there anything that has more rules and bureaucracy around it in BC than the distribution and sales of alcohol?
Maybe cigarettes…
Willow River store has been selling booze for as long as I can remember. How could that be?
editor’s note:
there are different rules for rural licences.
no big box stores ? wow Costco will be impressed .
Costco WILL be selling booze. Count on it. They are the reason this is all happening. Costco lobbied for similar changes in Washington state a few years ago. The gov won’t have a minimum store size and a maximum store size. It makes no sense.

Legalization of a ditch weed.
Pure speculation on my part but I suspect Jimmy Pattison’s grocery store empire donated a lot more money and resources to the BC Liberal party and election campaigns than did Costco. Having said that, here is one consumer that is hoping Costco (and the other big retailers) can bring their resources to bear on this issue. When we travel in the NW States, I am always impressed by the quality and value of the local wine and beer selection available at Costco or Freddy Meyers outlets.
A Costco employee told me they will be selling booze later this year.
Might be different rules for rural stores but is still basically a grocery store. Why different rules , sure no liquor stores out in rural areas but is that enough difference?
I thought the regulations said grocery stores cannot sell liquor when within one kilometer of a cold beer store. If so, the cold beer stores have covered the market and their licenses have to be bought out. Not allowing liquor sales in big box and convenience stores is idiocy. A friend living up north marvels at the liquor selection and prices at the Grand Prairie, Alberta, Costco store.

They are government liquor stores that are attached to a local post office / grocery store / what have you.
If the Gov’t wants to save some serious cash, they should get out of the Liquor Sales business all together. They can still control what comes in/out of the Province (they tend to giddy about that sort of thing), but get rid of those way over paid unionized stock boys/girls, and sell off the land those stores occupy (or end the lease).

Those over paid boys/girl bring in a profit of over a billion bucks each year.
Cheers
“Those over paid boys/girl bring in a profit of over a billion bucks each year. ”
Uhm…. no they don’t. The alcohol does. Nobody goes into the stores for the stock boys/girls. And if they do, them perhaps they need to hang out on Tindr instead.
No BC Liquor Stores makes for even bigger profit for the Province. What’s not to love?
Yeeesh…. “then perhaps”.
Seen earlier this week… “Spell check is my new worst enema.”
lol!
Did they change the rules on liquor sales in grocery stores?
Seems it was previously stated that grocery stores could sell alcohol if they were 1 kilometer or more away from another liquor store
Since there are so many liquore sales stores in PG I can’t think of any grocery stores that will be selling alcohol any time soon.
If the law has changed, and I wouldn’t be surprised, then this is irrelevant….
Right bcracer, this will not affect any PG stores. They are all within one km of a liquor store.
Awesome! Now they need to open some night clubs and get some of these rickety old basturds off this site up dancing. Only than will we have a city we can call our own.
Another downfall of society
