Hundreds Turn Out for Free Thanksgiving Dinner
Prince George, B.C. – Today’s pleasant weather helped make this year’s St. Vincent de Paul Society’s annual Thanksgiving dinner another success.
President Bernie Goold estimated they helped feed 800 people at the Sacred Heart Auditorium a varied menu including such holiday favourites as turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, vegetables and an assortment of pies for dessert.
She says they couldn’t have done it without the help of the College of New Caledonia’s Culinary Arts students who helped out for the tenth consecutive year under the tutelage of Chef Ron Christian.
“Bernie buys the turkey, we donate our time and services,” says Christian.
“It’s a great cause, it’s great for the community and we see a lot of volunteers here. Everybody’s helping and I think it’s fantastic.”
This year he says they cooked 18 27 pound turkey’s and estimates they devoted roughly 35 hours getting the work done.
One person who appreciated that hard work was Joey Willier who is currently unemployed and living alone at the Friendship Lodge on Queensway.
“Yes we enjoy it every year. They have good staff and good food. We just love it.”

Good story. The SVDP does a lot of good work in this town.
I agree JohnnyBelt. It makes one wonder why the City did not give them their tax exemption on their store this year. Seems it has something to do with running a business, even if it doesn’t make a profit, and basically provides clothes, etc; for the needy.
The City should re-visit their decision. (In my opinion)
Hey Greg! Bernie’s last name is actually Gould, just an fyi.
And kudos to all the volunteers, who put in their time for not only this event but throughout the year.
Hey “littleone” ! The last name is spelled correctly “Goold” FYI :)
