Sabo Offers Change at School Board

Prince George, B.C – Don Sabo says he’s offering something other candidates for School Board aren’t offering this time around – change.

He says he’d like “to see the outlying communities of McBride, Valemount, and Mackenzie represented more directly on the School Board. It means dedicated seats.”

Under his proposal, “a resident from Robson Valley should be elected by McBride and by Valemount to be their own trustee and another seat from Mackenzie should be dedicated for them.”

He says similar systems are already in place in the Kamloops and Kelowna School Districts.

So why is Sabo, a resident of Prince George, so concerned with rural representation?

“I believe that a stronger voice and more direct voice from these outlying communities will make the whole board stronger. These smaller communities have unique needs. It’s a fair approach.”

Another area he’d like to see an improvement in is in the 56% aboriginal graduation rate, something he calls “absolutely unacceptable.”

Sabo is no stranger to educational issues having run 8th in the 2011 School Board election.

He’s also served for three years as Chair for the School District Parent Advisory Council and professionally works as a consultant – most prominently for the Aboriginal Financial Officers Association of B.C.
